  • Here’s a Steller’s Jay in Lamar Valley, Yellowstone.
Steller’s Jays and Blue Jays are the only North American jays with crests, and they occasionally interbreed to produce hybrids where their ranges intersect.

Lovely Jay! I love the white eyebrows! 🥰 I suppose this subspecies that has the white eyebrows live in Colorado, as opposed to the subspecies out wear that have the bluer streaks on the forehead but no white eyebrows. I saw a video saying there’s at least a dozen subspecies of the Steller’s Jay that have unique features on the forehead or around the eyes depending on their geographic region. Thanks for sharing! 🤗❤🐦🖤💙

We were fascinated by the white eyebrows, too! We saw several Steller's Jays when we were in Colorado last year and saw a couple here in San Diego last month, but we didn't remember seeing any with that feature. I'll have to do some research on the subspecies to find out more about it. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I wish we could have gotten more footage, but we weren't able to find him after he flew off.

@@BeardedBirding You’re welcome! 🤗😉 Also, in my previous comment, I meant to say out “west” instead of out “wear”. 😅
