Tough call. This has more of a punch so it's fragmentation bursts cloud would be bigger and it the round its self hits no jet except maybe the A10 or su25 would be happy even then it wouldn't be happy. Lol
Also matt do you know about the PldVk vz 53/59 Czech AA gun is a slightly improved design of A ww2 German 3cm AA Gun Mk303 flak? And strangely the Cartridge is similar to that of soviet ak230 (30×210mmB)?
5:57 Sorry, but that's incorrect. The ZSU-23-4 uses, as the name suggests, four 23mm cannons. Perhaps you meant the ZSU-57-2? It uses two of these but does not have radar.

You've covered damn near every piece of military equipment I love and I love it! The 57 mm is a crazy cannon, saw a Serbian ZSU-57-2 mag dump several magazines and that was quite the display, with surprisingly little recoil and exceptional accuracy. Could you maybe cover the AK-630 in more detail? Its my favorite weapon ever made, I know you covered two of the variants in your Too 7 CIWS video, which is still one of my favorites that you've done, I'd just love to hear your thoughts on it in a slightly longer format, hell, I'd take a podcast-length video but, your standard 7 - 20 minutes of expertise would be lovely as well 😁😁 Thanks for your work Matt, you're awesome ❤
Indonesian Army air defense still uses these old beast. Some of them are retrofitted with digital fire control system and radar tracking and targeting system. We called S-60 as "si mbah" it means "old man'

In modern wars, this cannon is more suitable for suppressing infantry and demolishing buildings. for example, in World War 2, 37mm cannons were used to suppress infantry with fragmentation shells, and here a series of shells from 57mm fragmentation shells, the only thing that the infantry will feel is the desire to press harder into the ground
It'd still be good for taking on aircraft, helicopters, and missiles with a decent radar and fire control system. Similar to the 40mm Bofors guns which have been in use since before WW2 in various forms to this day.

5:54 the ZSU-23-4 shilka has 4 23mm 2A7 autocannons. It does not utilize the S-60. I think the SPAA platform you're thinking of is the ZSU 57-2 which has two S-60 cannons. It doesn't have any radar however.
An important user of the S-60 that you did not mention in the video (but you used a lot of footage from them ;) ) is the polish army. It was manufactured by Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów in poland under licence and several hundred are still in use. A modernized polish version is the S-60MB.
Medium size rounds (40-60mm) guns have exceptional accuracy and range capability due to the original design as AA guns. Which makes enemy infantry's cover meaningless especially houses/makeshift sandbag bunker or trees. With proper utilization, it can do the deadly direct fire support against the enemy infantry or APC/IFV.
This weapon was used in the first Gulf War 1980-1988, and many F4 planes were shot down. f14, Bell and Sirosky type weapons... In the second Gulf of 1991, work with it was not bad, but it was limited, and in 2003 it was used in ambushes to hunt Apache weapons and A10 planes, and its performance was excellent

Actually, Shilka (ZSU-23/4) has 4 23mm guns, not these... These things (AAA in general) have been used against ground targets with devastating effects since WW2. They were used a lot during Yugoslav wars... For example, Praga was beloved, but reload was difficult and the crew was exposed at that time and it really doesn't have too much ammo in magazine. I myself served in anti-aircraft unit (though I was a radar operator) consisted of Giraffe radar and Bofors guns. Some of officers, NCOs and contract soldiers from my unit participated in Kosovo war. There, Bofors was called "sniper killer". Once an enemy sniper was located, especially in rural areas and villages there, they would set up a Bofors and simply start shooting at his location. Bofors can hit accurately at 4.000m, way outside of range of sniper rifles. If he is hiding inside a house, in a matter of seconds that house would be turned into rubbles along with the sniper inside it... Also, one NCO told us about triple barrel 20mm guns (M55) used against human waves that the KLA launched against Yugoslav positions. He claimed that he literally saw those KLA guys being cut in two... Which is very likely... Overall, these things are not too complex, easy to use, relatively cheap and can do a lot of damage. What's not to like?
The original 8.8cm caliber was chosen by the German Navy as secondary armament because the weight of the round was the maximum that could be handled by hand alone as a single pierce. This also made it suitable for FLAK. This was pushed to higher calibers in some countries but always came at the cost of reduced rate of fire or rapid crew fatigue that reduced ROF (eg the British 4.7 inch Naval Gun) . Auto loaders and integrated fuse setting machine integrated into the loader helped the caliber to be extended to 10.5cm and even 12.8cm. The American 5 inch DP Naval Gun handled round and cartridge separately but still achieved 25RPM.
I moved some 5 round wooden crates of S-60 ammunition once. They weigh 100 pounds or 45.4kg. It would be a massive workout keeping that weapon at a high firing rate.
hey bro, just a heads up, the shilka is a zsu 23-4, the 23mm rapid fire, 4 barrels. you probably are thinking of the zsu 57-2 (dont know the call sign for it). its easy to confuse these russian spaa, theres also a 37-2, not the same 37mm that the 57mm was to replace, a whole new gun system for rapid fire. i can understand the use of a high calibre reasonable high rate of fire weapon for dealing with slower planes/helis. but trying to track a CAS coming in close to mach with a hand cranked gun platform must be near impossible, unless theres a large cluster of guns to just fill the sky.
Nice. I bet it has a possible secondary roll as a lite anti vehicle weapon. Make some high vap rounds for it. And it can probably go thru most ifvs and apcs. Very nice can I mount one of a deuce and half?
Since we went from a "only high value hard to hit targets in the sky" to a situation where we have - in addition to that - a lot of "low value easy to hit targets" such systems may have a comeback in modern warfare...
Unless you have proximity fused ammo the odds of hitting anything with these is pretty slim. The Russians made some PF rounds but they’re very rare. Scoring a hit on something as small as a drone or as fast as a jet would be basically impossible.
they're currently used against fixed and semi-hardened entrenchments where volume of fire is more important. But then you could say the same argument for rifle rounds where it actually takes close to 100,000 rounds to hit an opponent according to combat statistics.

We smoked a lot of 57mms post-Desert Storm while enforcing the no-fly zone. They would, on occasion, pop off rounds at the patrolling aircraft. The jet would then turn around, roll in and smoke them. They are really only marginally effective against low flying aircraft. Anything else was just a noisy version of inviting unwanted attention.
Yes, but they are using and updated version of it on a sort of IFV/light tank system that has gotten the attention of NATO, probably for good reason. That's why the US is looking to upgrade its next Gen IFV to include a 50mm main gun based on a necked up version of the current 30mm round.
More then adequate for ground support and anti Drone/Helicopeter duty. Slow and un armored targets , specialy drones I a pair of these with proxy fuses doing an number of any drone that gets in range
AAA is making a big comeback on the battlefields of today. Sure in the last 30 years these guns have been used mostly as direct fire support weapons, as they lacked modern tracking systems. These upgraded versions with radar/IR fire control, and new systems such as Sky Ranger, using new ammo with programmable airburst fuse is a good (and maybe only effective) defence against the scurge that are swarms of killer drones.

Originally the Soviets thought 57mm to be the perfect anti-tank caliber and they poured a lot of resources into further development, eventually leading to what became known as the ZiS-2 57mm AT gun. But they got reality checked rather quickly and switched over the 76mm The ZiS-2 and its cousin the Ch-51 were both withdrawn from anti-tank duty and the Soviets began the process of repurposing these suddenly useless guns. By switching from 57x480mm to 57x347mm they managed to find some use for the caliber and its related development. But drawing any direct correlation between the ZiS-2 and the S-60/S-68A is, like I stated prior, a hell of a stretch
In the PAVN, these AA canons are still being used in mass, with both single and dual variants. Lately, they're also upraded with electrical synchronized triger, night fighting equipment and better optics. We also Synchronized and automated them in battery size ( around 5-6 canons per platoon). Newer tatics are being test since the apearance of FPV and UAV, but still base heavilly on synchronized wide range-heavy volume AA firing (mật độ hỏa lực phòng không dày đặc và đồng bộ) to effectively destroy flying vehicle They"re also paired with other AA autocanon/ AA canon and HMG like the 37mm 61-K, NSV, DShKM, KPV, 2M-3 and even KS-19 100mm AA canon. The _57x348mmSR_ is an older cartridge but which has now been adopted for multiple Russian AFVs such as the BMP-3 and the planned Kurganets-25, T-15 Armata and VPK-7829 Bumerang vehicles. This is the round that Russia sees as being one of the important ones of the future battlefield. In contrast, the round that the US has seemingly gone for is the *_50x228mm_* (used in the XM913 chain gun) which is considerably smaller. It may suffice but if it doesn't then the proper Western equivalent would be the Bofors *_57x438mmR._* Its cartridge case is longer but slimmer whereas the Russian case is shorter but wider, so overall they're pretty similar. Personally, I think Russia's over-emphasis on _57x348mm_ is problematic. They're currently not using any rounds between _30x165mm_ or _30x210mmB_ and 57mm, but one they did use prior to the late-20th-century was the *_37x252mmSR._* It's still used in many countries, including China, and Russia needs to bring it back.

I would like to also point out that Poland has modernized not a small number of S-60 in our inventory to S-60MB standard. So electric elevation and rotation, remote control, digital datalink for connection to WD-95 command vehicle (with color day camera, thermal camera, laser range finder, IFF) - shown on this video at 3:55 (interior) 4:16 (exterior) 4:24 (closeup of optical head), as well as REGA integrated Air Defence command and control system (that integrates multiple systems like S200C [Modernized S200WE], S125SC [Modernized S125], ZSU-23-2MP Biala [modernized Shilka], 9k33 OSA-AKM-P1 [Modernized 9k33 OSA-AKM] and so on)
The ZSU-23-4 uses four *23* mm guns, the same as the ZU-23-2! The S-60 was the basis of the ZSU-57-2, which was the predecessor of the Shilka, and lacked radar for fire control making it fairly ineffective as an AAA system. For that reason the ZSU-23-4 was developed to replace it.
The Russians have been always been good at two things. 1 getting a higher fire rate than would be expected for the calibre, and 2 making things easy to maintain. The Ukranian's however have demonstrated that these are not enough if the opposition has high reliability but sophisticated kit.

Great vid. I’m wondering why we wouldn’t see these used in Ukraine for drone defence. Is the targeting of small drones a large challenge ? The fragmentation projectile you mention, would that be similar to a proximity fused round like the VT fuse from American in second war in pacific? I’m very curious about Drone defence. Many videos of Ukraine with drones being prominent. Video’s highlighted on the new high tech ray beam space lasers, etc., but I was think that the auto cannon with proximity fuse should be widely available, inexpensive, and have a ground use role. .?? I'd say no, at most destroy the tracks, optics, break the gun but I doubt it would penatrate the armor of the Abrams or Challenger. In the back it would go thru and cause engine fires I'm pretty sure.
Of course it can, but only with AP rounds. A single salvo on the side of an Abrams would easily take it out, there's so much kinetic energy behind those AP rounds, if the first shot doesn't go through and kill everyone, a follow-up shot on compromised side armour would do it. 57 mm of steel going M-16 cartridge velocity can take out damn near as make's no difference: anything from the side. From Maus to the latest monster Strv 122. If not the shell fragments, then spalling. And again, its over 1 shot a second that this thing spits out, if the first salvo doesn't kill everything you're shooting at from the side, you're righting aliens and you should've retreated anyway 😂

The 25mm sabot can kill a T-72 within 15-20 shots. To think that a 35, 40, 50 or 57mm sabot round cannot is ridiculous. During the 1st Gulf War I saw Bradley 25's take out T-72's.
I wonder if we'll start seeing the Zsu 57 2 being used in action in Ukraine at some point, maybe they already have?, With an armoured turret and tracked hull mounting twin 57mm cannons surely this would be 1 of the most awesome armoured ground attack platforms in terms of heavy cannon fire,but even the single barrel towed version on a flatbed truck is no joke, and as we have all seem what very small efp grenades dropped from drones are doing to main battle tanks a 57mm armor piercing round is likely more potent than the experts give it credit for.
I wonder how effective it would be, with radar, as point defense against cruise missiles. The shells may include proximity fuses, which seem like they would be effective in that role.

The German 88mm gun was designed for anti aircraft but ended up becoming an anto tank gun. This is not the first time a weapon's use had evolved
The original 8.8cm caliber was chosen by the German Navy as secondary armament because the weight of the round was the maximum that could be handled by hand alone as a single pierce. This also made it suitable for FLAK. This was pushed to higher calibers in some countries but always came at the cost of reduced rate of fire or rapid crew fatigue that reduced ROF (eg the British 4.7 inch Naval Gun) . Auto loaders and integrated fuse setting machine integrated into the loader helped the caliber to be extended to 10.5cm and even 12.8cm.
The American 5 inch DP Naval Gun handled round and cartridge separately but still achieved 25RPM.
My local VFW has the American 57mm AT gun on display.

I moved some 5 round wooden crates of S-60 ammunition once. They weigh 100 pounds or 45.4kg. It would be a massive workout keeping that weapon at a high firing rate.

hey bro, just a heads up, the shilka is a zsu 23-4, the 23mm rapid fire, 4 barrels. you probably are thinking of the zsu 57-2 (dont know the call sign for it). its easy to confuse these russian spaa, theres also a 37-2, not the same 37mm that the 57mm was to replace, a whole new gun system for rapid fire. i can understand the use of a high calibre reasonable high rate of fire weapon for dealing with slower planes/helis. but trying to track a CAS coming in close to mach with a hand cranked gun platform must be near impossible, unless theres a large cluster of guns to just fill the sky.

Since we went from a "only high value hard to hit targets in the sky" to a situation where we have - in addition to that - a lot of "low value easy to hit targets" such systems may have a comeback in modern warfare...
Unless you have proximity fused ammo the odds of hitting anything with these is pretty slim. The Russians made some PF rounds but they’re very rare.
Scoring a hit on something as small as a drone or as fast as a jet would be basically impossible.
they're currently used against fixed and semi-hardened entrenchments where volume of fire is more important. But then you could say the same argument for rifle rounds where it actually takes close to 100,000 rounds to hit an opponent according to combat statistics.
Programable detonation rounds are now standard for such large calibers.

We smoked a lot of 57mms post-Desert Storm while enforcing the no-fly zone. They would, on occasion, pop off rounds at the patrolling aircraft. The jet would then turn around, roll in and smoke them. They are really only marginally effective against low flying aircraft. Anything else was just a noisy version of inviting unwanted attention.
Yes, but they are using and updated version of it on a sort of IFV/light tank system that has gotten the attention of NATO, probably for good reason. That's why the US is looking to upgrade its next Gen IFV to include a 50mm main gun based on a necked up version of the current 30mm round.
More then adequate for ground support and anti Drone/Helicopeter duty. Slow and un armored targets , specialy drones

AAA is making a big comeback on the battlefields of today. Sure in the last 30 years these guns have been used mostly as direct fire support weapons, as they lacked modern tracking systems. These upgraded versions with radar/IR fire control, and new systems such as Sky Ranger, using new ammo with programmable airburst fuse is a good (and maybe only effective) defence against the scurge that are swarms of killer drones.

He’s reaching. Originally the Soviets thought 57mm to be the perfect anti-tank caliber and they poured a lot of resources into further development, eventually leading to what became known as the ZiS-2 57mm AT gun. But they got reality checked rather quickly and switched over the 76mm
The ZiS-2 and its cousin the Ch-51 were both withdrawn from anti-tank duty and the Soviets began the process of repurposing these suddenly useless guns. By switching from 57x480mm to 57x347mm they managed to find some use for the caliber and its related development. But drawing any direct correlation between the ZiS-2 and the S-60/S-68A is, like I stated prior, a hell of a stretch

In the PAVN, these AA canons are still being used in mass, with both single and dual variants. Lately, they're also upraded with electrical synchronized triger, night fighting equipment and better optics. We also Synchronized and automated them in battery size ( around 5-6 canons per platoon). Newer tatics are being test since the apearance of FPV and UAV, but still base heavilly on synchronized wide range-heavy volume AA firing (mật độ hỏa lực phòng không dày đặc và đồng bộ) to effectively destroy flying vehicle
They"re also paired with other AA autocanon/ AA canon and HMG like the 37mm 61-K, NSV, DShKM, KPV, 2M-3 and even KS-19 100mm AA canon. Together They create a multi-layers anti air Defense, cooperating and supporting other AA defense unit like Land to Air missiles, RADAR reconnaissance unit, SPAA unit and MANPADS

Can these AA guns still work in modern warfares ? Like shooting down F35, F15E, Su-30 Su-34 because these fighter bombers fly in very high altitudes with fast speed and can launch air to ground missiles from max 500km away (Taurus) and drop guided bombs from 27km away

The _57x348mmSR_ is an older cartridge but which has now been adopted for multiple Russian AFVs such as the BMP-3 and the planned Kurganets-25, T-15 Armata and VPK-7829 Bumerang vehicles. This is the round that Russia sees as being one of the important ones of the future battlefield. In contrast, the round that the US has seemingly gone for is the *_50x228mm_* (used in the XM913 chain gun) which is considerably smaller. It may suffice but if it doesn't then the proper Western equivalent would be the Bofors *_57x438mmR._* Its cartridge case is longer but slimmer whereas the Russian case is shorter but wider, so overall they're pretty similar.
Personally, I think Russia's over-emphasis on _57x348mm_ is problematic. They're currently not using any rounds between _30x165mm_ or _30x210mmB_ and 57mm, but one they did use prior to the late-20th-century was the *_37x252mmSR._* It's still used in many countries, including China, and Russia needs to bring it back.

So electric elevation and rotation, remote control, digital datalink for connection to WD-95 command vehicle (with color day camera, thermal camera, laser range finder, IFF) - shown on this video at 3:55 (interior) 4:16 (exterior) 4:24 (closeup of optical head), as well as REGA integrated Air Defence command and control system (that integrates multiple systems like S200C [Modernized S200WE], S125SC [Modernized S125], ZSU-23-2MP Biala [modernized Shilka], 9k33 OSA-AKM-P1 [Modernized 9k33 OSA-AKM] and so on)

The ZSU-23-4 uses four *23* mm guns, the same as the ZU-23-2!
The S-60 was the basis of the ZSU-57-2, which was the predecessor of the Shilka, and lacked radar for fire control making it fairly ineffective as an AAA system. For that reason the ZSU-23-4 was developed to replace it.

The Russians have been always been good at two things. 1 getting a higher fire rate than would be expected for the calibre, and 2 making things easy to maintain. The Ukranian's however have demonstrated that these are not enough if the opposition has high reliability but sophisticated kit.

Could it take out a modern tank with flanking hits?
I'd say no, at most destroy the tracks, optics, break the gun but I doubt it would penatrate the armor of the Abrams or Challenger. In the back it would go thru and cause engine fires I'm pretty sure.
I've seen a BTR 80 with a 30mm Autocannon kill a T-72B with flank shots. I imagine the 57mm would do the trick.
Of course it can, but only with AP rounds. A single salvo on the side of an Abrams would easily take it out, there's so much kinetic energy behind those AP rounds, if the first shot doesn't go through and kill everyone, a follow-up shot on compromised side armour would do it.
57 mm of steel going M-16 cartridge velocity can take out damn near as make's no difference: anything from the side. From Maus to the latest monster Strv 122. If not the shell fragments, then spalling. And again, its over 1 shot a second that this thing spits out, if the first salvo doesn't kill everything you're shooting at from the side, you're righting aliens and you should've retreated anyway 😂

The 25mm sabot can kill a T-72 within 15-20 shots. To think that a 35, 40, 50 or 57mm sabot round cannot is ridiculous. During the 1st Gulf War I saw Bradley 25's take out T-72's.

With an armoured turret and tracked hull mounting twin 57mm cannons surely this would be 1 of the most awesome armoured ground attack platforms in terms of heavy cannon fire,but even the single barrel towed version on a flatbed truck is no joke,
