    Fellow fat woman here and I deeply appreciate when fat isn't used as a "slur" or with judgment attached - it's just a description 💜
    What a beautiful gift - the dress you are wearing is amazing too

    I love this! My great grandmother, big granny was as the name implies big her whole known as Big Patty. She was 6 ft 4 and just about as big around. She was super strong once even dragging a heifer herself out of pure anger according to my grandfather. She sewed almost all her own garments and although most the old folks told me she was known for being a bit scary and incredibly strong from what I knew of her she was kind of a creative soul. She loved to sing, sew and play hymns on the guitar. She also had a collection of vintage even in her day hats. I love seeing these plus sizes garments because I always see teeny tiny ones that would fit my mom or my dads mother but never my family like Big Granny. I love seeing these beautiful garments that maybe my giantess granny would’ve worn in another time and I’m glad you guys are wearing them and keeping them alive!

    I truly thought plus size vintage was not available. I have never seen it at any vintage sale or even display. Thanks for proving me wrong. Also- I'm surprisingly touched by these dresses and foundation garments- these are the clothes of my Great Grandmother's prime era. I never knew her and my clothing connections to her are through quilts she made with cuttings from her and family members' clothes. To see these garments whole makes her more vivid for me.

    • @sidsimpson9488
      @sidsimpson9488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I seem to remember hearing that one reason for not seeing a lot of plus size vintage was that the garments were expensive and tended to be worn out after many years of use. I'm really not sure if that is true. My above reference to my Great Grandmother using clothing cuttings for quilts might be a kind of explanation. Having said that, Great Grandmother Neal was from a poor rural background and was very much of the re/upcycle mindset as a way to maximize resources. She manufactured and embellished ( embroidery, appliques, etc.) clothes and cloth items for her whole extended family for many years. That had nothing to do with her size.

    • @sidsimpson9488
      @sidsimpson9488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Another thought- My initial reaction to these clothes is to put them in a "grandma" category. But upon reflection, that is very limiting. The clothes you unboxed- particularly the black dress- are lovely, not necessarily "matronly" and appear to my untrained eye to be upsized versions of the current fashion of the era. I only have noticed a trend for making a whole category of plus-sized tent-like clothes for specific plus size consumption starting in the late 1950s. Is that when it started? I wonder if my/this is an ingrained response to them being "old fashioned" or is it a response to them being "plus size"? As a fat woman who happily seeks out and wears clothes that make me feel cute/attractive/professional, I now wonder how my clothes will be viewed and categorized by future generations.

      @@sidsimpson9488 The thing is, smaller sizes are more likely to survive because they're harder to hand down to someone else or remake into something else than bigger clothes. There's a smaller pool of people it fits and less fabric to work with. So plus size clothes had a higher chance of being worn to bits and/or recycled. A lot of people also get bigger with age, so those teeny, tiny vintage clothes that have you wondering how a grown adult fit into them you often see might very well be from some's late teen and early 20s and have had sentimental value

    I wish modern repro companies would realise there are women out here who aren't a size 12 and want to wear vintage. I have yet to be able to find even a vintage style bra to wear with my clothes! I am not that odd of a shape!

    Selection bias is real! Much of the vintage that survives is either dead stock or the things that weren't worn to death. So typically the smaller stuff. I'm on the small end of plus size (14) and have been able to find some dresses over the years. If you call shops ahead they will sometimes be able to tell you if they have things in your waist size. Just be aware some people don't measure correctly. I once tried on a dress that was supposedly my size, but they had measured just over the hips!

    What an amazing haul! As a plus size woman (size US 20) who has been dressing in vintage style for almost 30 years, I can feel your excitement for these gorgeous garments! I’ve been really fortunate lately (since the pandemic really) in finding fantastic plus size vintage. I still wear mostly reproduction items daily, but I am finding more true vintage items out there in my size. I did a video a while ago regarding plus size inclusivity in vintage reproduction companies, I’d love to hear your thoughts about that. I also collect vintage Lane Bryant catalogs, they are so inspiring to see the styles that were available to plus size women.

    What a kind woman to have sent all of that to you. The dresses and undergarments were beautiful. The house dress really took me back! I'd like to wear them today! Yes, it is hard to find vintage for plus size, but clearly it is worth the effort. Not sure why you said you wouldn't wear the one bra. It looked like it would be very comfortable. I am now searching for a long line bra for plus size or a bra and girdle in one. My grandmother wore them all of the time, everyday. They used to be very common, but not now, so my search is on! I hope you will have a modeling video of the new garments! Thanks for sharing with us.

    I love this video!! I cannot imagine why there wouldn't be plus-size vintage at all. I know that I have had a lot of relatives who are currently plus size and would have, in all likelihood, been plus size during their teens and young adulthood as well.
    One of my frustrations with secondhand fashion in general is that there are people who search for "oversized" pieces....only those are actually just pieces that would perfectly fit a fat person. And yet people are buying them and either wearing them as is or, worse, cutting them up and making them over into smaller pieces

    FUN!!! Back in the 80's I went to a shop that was still a shoe shop downstairs, but there was vintage, unsold clothing (and everything!) stock upstairs. I got my mother a pair of really cool shoes from the 1950's that she loved as well as some 1960's paisley shirts. There were some dresses like the ones you show, so it's definitely out there! :-)

I a 69 years old and every single garment you pulled from that box was familiar - all those times as a child I lounged on my Grandma's bed chatting with her while she got dressed! A woman of substantial size, she was so beautiful with kind eyes, gray hair pulled tight in a bun on the back of her neck, and she always wore dresses like those you pulled from the box and stout, black oxford heels with thick heels. Why is it that when you’ve got big boobs, they’re the last to go? I’m a 42 (I think? I don’t buy in US sizes usually, I’m an AU 18-20 in bras) G- H. I think in American styles I tend to size up a cup. So an H in US styles, a G in Aus/UK styles.
      And finding vi rage style bras is damn near impossible for me. I do fit into the largest What Katie Did Bra, but only just, and only with two bra extenders. But I just found a Fantasie bra that is an older style lift and separate, though not bullet, and I’m getting it this weekend. But it’s from a “normal” specialty big boob bra shop, not a vintage shop.
      It would be so much easier with smaller boobs. And if I think I have it hard, my poor daughter.... she’s going to be bigger than me. How do I know? Because she’s the same cup size that I am (though smaller band size) and she’s not yet 13. All her friends are still wearing pretty little bralettes, and she’s been in underwire for two and a half years. I just hope that she sees a larger range available to her than what was around 20 years ago.

      @@katherinemorelle7115 having small boobs would of course be easier on your back and all..bc I know that is a real problem! But not necessarily easier for clothing...I have small boobs and I'm plus sized, the problem is that companies think that all plus sized ladies have large boobs...so finding things that fit me around and also don't make me look like my chest spontaneously deflated is hard to do...but I feel your frustration in the way that sometimes we just wanna feel pretty and if you're not "normal/standard" sized then it gets upsetting

      My Née-Née was a fat woman from Sequin, TX, born 1922, and when I was a child in 60’d-70’s, all her dresses and undergarments looked like those in your haul, the bras and slips were like that but she wore a girdle with suspenders and nylon stockings with Keds sneakers. Her heavy thighs would make the stocking tops rub together and you knew she was coming by the heavy tread and the scritchy sound of the rubbing nylon. She had soft fluffy white hair, a hankie in her ample, sagging bosom and smelled of Cashmere Bouguet, her favorite soap and talcum which we took her until she passed. She had a creamy complexion that was the envy of Northern women, my mama said the only good to come of life in a humid climate was it preserved the skin. She was a hell of cook, and as a single mother worked as a hospital cook and housekeeper/companion. She was still working into her 60’s when we were young. She had a white Chrysler w/ red interior, smoked menthol cigarettes and her nails were always done. Her hotcakes were legendary, soft fluffy biscuit-sized and fried in 1/2” of grease, they rose to almost an inch high in the pan. Crisp on both sides and tender in the middle. I loved the taste but have to admit I got a bellyache after over endulging. Thanks for a trip down memory lane! I wore vintage since middle school and her dresses were so cool I wore them tucked and pleated under the self-belts around my size 6 waist.

    Yes!! I love vintage and these dresses are fantastic! I know it can be difficult sometimes to find pieces that aren't size small/medium. A lot of online and local vintage stores tend not to be very size inclusive. When I was looking for a vintage prom dress at 17, I couldn't find anything locally that wasn't at least two sizes too small, so I ended up having to add a lace up back to the somewhat raggedy, yellow tulle dress that I ended up finding. It turned out great, but it did bust my confidence a bit, especially at that age, when I couldn't find anything appealing in my size. Seeing this makes me very happy!!

    This is so inspiring! As a far girl, I resigned myself to the idea of just having to sew my own clothes and not ever being able to find actual vintage items. I’ll be checking out miss Diane for sure!
    Also, I would LOVE to hear your opinion on vintage-style foundation garments from a fat person’s perspective. I’ve watched a lot of videos on them, but they’re all from relatively thin girls. Part of why I got into vintage style was because I felt that I could enhance my figure without having to wear shapewear, but the other part of me wants to be able to wear pencil skirts without feeling self conscious about my tummy. The consent push and pull between wanting to embrace my body for what it is, and wanting to wear certain clothes without feeling like I have to do the work of constant self-love is hard! Do you find vintage style shapewear like girdles to be more or less comfortable than modern stuff like spanx?

      So many are “curvy” but not even midsize! I fluctuate between plus and straight sizes and it always feels like these “curvy” girls are 5’2 and a size 4. I’m 6’1 and currently a size 16 (generally).

    What beautiful dresses goodness I'm UK size12 and at vintage clothing places I'm constantly told they didn't ever have plus side clothes I'm not plus side at all so I cannot imagine how wonderful it must be to find such beautiful pieces to fit you and to feel fabulous in! Plus the dress you were wearing in this video is so beautiful xx

    First of all, I LOVE the dress you’re wearing in the video!!!! Fantastic colors! Next, I had a lot of fun watching you unbox all the wonderful vintage dresses and items your friend sent! About 3/4 of the way through, I thought the items were coming out of a magician’s box - as if a never ending chain of scarves was going to come out! Ha! 😉😆
    Such beautiful items! Such great fabrics!
    I know you will enjoy wearing the ones you plan to! Have fun!

    Wow, those are some amazing finds! It's so hard to find vintage in plus sizes -- I have a 1920s corset, and a 1960s dress and coat, but that's all I've found so far.

    Not finished the vid yet, but had to comment. Yes! Finding a truly large corsellette (sp?) is near to impossible. You can't even find off the rack corsets, or garter belts over a large today. A "large" as in maaybe a 40 inch bust. This was wonderful to see!

    I'm working on trying to reclaim fat for myself, but I'm still struggling with it and body positivity or body neutrality bc it can be pretty tough to not have negative feelings about my body as a chronically ill person dealing with debilitating chronic pain, but I'm working on it! Videos like yours and other costubers who have highlighted extant antique and vintage plus sized garments help me feel like I can actually make and wear my own historical and vintage reproductions, so thank you!

    From what I’ve read from medieval times, people were “fat” because they had the money to eat well, so whenever my fiancé is having self conscious days about her weight I tell her about what I said at the beginning of which I can’t figure out how to phrase differently 😅

    • @BarleeCarlee
      @BarleeCarlee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You know what's funny? Kids in high school are now self-conscious for NOT being curvy. I so vividly remember being embarrassed in highschool for my hips, butt, and thighs. The only thing I had going for me were big boobs. But now kids are embarrassed to have "hip dips". Better late than never!

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      BarleeCarlee kids are still self conscious about their curves though. Especially if those curves are very obvious, and much larger than their peers.
      My daughter lives in baggy shirts and hoodies because of it- she’s almost 13, in high school (Aussie high schools run yr 7 to yr 12) and she HATES her curves. To be bluntly honest, she’s likely got the biggest boobs in her school, adult staff included. So it’s not easy when you’re all the way over the other side of the spectrum. I think she’d be happy to be somewhere in the middle, but that’s just not an option for her.
      It’s not fair to her. Especially given the fact she started getting street harassment from adult men when she was 10. Because if you don’t look at her face, even though she’s short (not quite 5’), she looks like an adult, with very big boobs, and hips and bum that match. That being said, most of the time, she’s in a school uniform, so the pricks know full well that she’s not an adult, but that doesn’t stop them. And the first time, she was in a primary school uniform, so the arse knew she wasn’t even a teenager yet. Didn’t stop him. So that sucks.
      She just doesn’t like that she stands out. It’s not easy to have a KimK type body (but with a bigger chest) when you’re only 12. It was worse when she was still in primary school though. At least in high school there are other students around with big boobs, even if they are five years older. In primary school, it was just her.
      And while I can empathise to a degree, because I had similar experiences, I wasn’t anywhere near as big as she is. I was about a D at 12. Which is big for that age. But she’s a G-H, which is big for an adult woman. There’s not really a comparison. As she says, she’s just sick of standing out, sick of being stared at, sick of being catcalled. And I’m worried that the additional negative attention might mean that there’s a higher chance of her being targeted by a predator.
      So while kids might say they want to be really curvy, they really, really don’t. Also, it’s impossible to find clothes that fit off the rack. My daughter is lucky that I’m able to tailor her clothes for her (mostly uniforms and jeans atm).
