The original was done by the Supremes, a number one hit for them in 1966. One year later, Vanilla Fudge's very heavy version got as high as number 6. The song was written by the legendary Motown songwriting team of Holland, Dozier, and Holland. I saw this awesome concert bill about 20 years ago - The Yardbirds, Vanilla Fudge, Steppenwolf, and the Doors of the 21st Century. A great night of music.

They still tour. The legendary drummer, Carmine Appice, was a big influence on a generation of rock drummers. He co-wrote some hit songs with Rod Stewart when he played with Rod's band. He was a drumming teacher with a long reach in books, videos, and in personal drum clinics. He played in a lot of great bands over the years and was one of the best of his generation.

The fudge were great at doing covers! This was a Motown cover by the Supremes a female group. The fudge also covered the Beatles tune Eleanor Rigby, which was also great.. I saw them live in late 1967 as a 14 year old. The drummer and bass player, went on to form a great band in 1970 called CACTUS. They then hooked up with the late Jeff Beck to form Beck/Bogert/Appice But this band and Cactus were my favorite bands in that era.

vanilla fudge biggest hits were predominantly covers. They did produce a special heavy psychedelia that was good. The two elements that let the band catch fire are the Hammond organ which is the greatest musical instrument, ever. The second component of Fudge was of course the attack of carmine Appices drumming which was always fabulous. Phenomenal rock drummer. Now for my usual trivia because as they used to say in the boys home that colored kid really likes music. Was I the only colored in the state of Maine 1970s? But I knew the music cause we would get donated records. The people that wrote this song are Holland-Dozier-Holland. They also wrote the song "band of Gold" that bizmatic listened to a few weeks ago. They also wrote Where did our love go? (supremes) You cant hurry love (supremes) and dozens of other major Motown hits. Three geniuses, they helped color music through the 60s and 70s.

Hi, I've never written on your page before even though I have watched your channel's reactions a few different times and have found them very enjoyable. However, after watching your reaction to this one and seeing that you really liked it, you should watch them doing this song live. There is a live tv version from the Ed Sullivan from 1968 that I've seen quite a few people doing reactions for on this song, and these 4 guys are very good performers live. With myself being a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist starting at the age of 12 years old, I thought these guys did a great job live on this song. The keyboard played does lead vocals while the guitar player, bass player and drummer do all the backing vocals. I played in the 80's and 90's so that's something that you used to see a lot of with more then one singer in the band. I was in two different bands where all of us could sing lead vocals, so we did all kinds of harmonies like these bands did. It was normal to see this in bands back then. But you won't see it now or even for the last 25 years or so. But I just thought it's something that you would enjoy so I thought I would mention it when I saw your reaction to the audio version. Great work!

"You Keep Me Hangin' On" was originally recorded in 1966 by the Supremes for the Motown label. The single is rooted in proto-funk and rhythm and blues, compared to the Supremes' previous single, "You Can't Hurry Love", which uses the call and response elements akin to gospel. The song's signature guitar part is said to have originated from a Morse code-like radio sound effect, typically used before a news announcement, heard by Lamont Dozier.

Back in the early 2000's a girlfriend of mine's best friend was a cousin of Carmine and I met him backstage at a Concert in Murray Hill, NYC. When I shook his hand they were as big and strong as an NHL Hockey Players. I guess that's what made him such a power drummer in the vein of Bonham and Cobham. Supremes wasn't a cover, it was the original. The song was written by Brian and Eddy Holland and Lamont Dozier for Motown Studios for the Supremes.
