@@thesteelrodent1796 It was like game makers wanted to position their products as "not for children" entertainment to widen the audience. This was the era when NIntendo was the censorship king and the big, old corporation that was the enemy of new, edgy game platforms like PSX and XBOX. Funny how now Sony's position is the bloated censoring platform and Nintendo and Microsoft are the underdog team-up (Cuphead, Ori, even Banjo shows up in his original n64 game on Switch and adult/suggestive games are somehow less censored on Switch than on Playstation)

The Atari 2600's best selling game (Pac-Man) Was Released in 1982; 21 years prior to 2003.
21 years prior to now would be the year 2000, the year the PS2 was released.
The PS2 is as old as the Atari aesthetic is to them as the PS2 is to us.
The SNES and PS1 would be closer to PONG in relation to the present, time-wise.

Seeing this I realize how out of touch I was already then about the latest in the gaming market - except for the 3D FPS genre, which I still cared a lot about, even though I was pretty much stuck in the world of OG DooM and other games made with same engine (Heretic, Hexen, Strife), I did play the new games as well, if they just ran on my computer. But that was it, I could barely play Unreal with somewhat limited graphics details - I could put them on full and enjoy how awesome it looked back then, but anything larger than a small corridor would make it unplayable if there were enemies around.
Then I got my new computer - and moved to Linux, having become sick of the Windows experience. There was a lot more to me being a computer hobbyist than gaming, and I kinda fell out from it - even from the _still alive_ DooM community. Running my usual editor in a DosBox just felt cumbersome. I've been meaning to get back on the track, I'm fairly certain that if there's no modern editors ported to Linux, they should be able to run under Wine - as I think should be the case with source ports, like ZDooM, which at least used to have it's own Linux port back in the days.
But damn, this just proves I was right about not caring that much about what's going on with the most recent games. It's been 20 years and I still don't feel like playing the latest games - I can pick and choose the actually good ones from back then; heck, even earlier. There's a NES game that I feel I *must* play someday, it was called Earthbound or Mother 3 I think... Depends on where it was released I think, but I saw a video about it on one of the many retro gaming channels I watch, and it was just wildly crazy what's in that game. It's sort of a zelda'ish adventure game, but it's so totally on it's own plane of existence that it must be an awesome experience =) These games I never knew about, while most gamers I suppose did, these "extreme" things can give me a laugh on these videos, but that's as far it goes - I feel I didn't miss the slightest thing by not knowing about them :)

Second thing would be that I suggest checking out some PS3 era games cause there's some gems on there like Bioshock (the awesome spiritual successor of System Shock) and many others either directly inspired by or made by some of the same people that were making the old games like Doom for instance American Mcgee from ID Software made Alice and Alice madness returns after leaving ID and Valve had a golden age during the PS3 era with Half Life 2, Portal 1 and 2, and Left 4 Dead so basically I wouldn't write off the era after boomer shooters too hard.
Third thing would be other than giving PS3 a chance I'd mostly suggest sticking to indie games since they've been cranking out 2d games and boomer shooters like crazy personal faves as of late being Eastward (very Earthbound inspired game) and Ion Fury (classic boomer shooter made in the OG Duke Nukem engine).

Aw man, I almost don't even need the entire video, just the throwback intro to get into christmassy LGR mood! :) Getting nostalgic about a show about nostalgia...

I'm sure this video is going to be some people's first exposure to the fact that there used to be a program called "Nero Burning ROM", and that alone is worth the effort taken to make it.

Can't say I was expecting you to review Outlaw Golf of all things. It's not just that it's a sports game, it's also a console title; just about every game you've covered was on the PC.
I played the second Outlaw Golf on my grandfather's modded Xbox back in 2005 (or was it 2006? I can't remember). It was no Tiger Woods PGA Tour, but it was a fun enough title.

Still have my copy of Outlaw Golf and the first nine holes of xmas. Didn't even know there was a second one. OG was a really solid golf game, just with over the top silliness thrown in. Makes me wanna bust out the ole Xbox and slap some balls around.

  • @scott2696

I remember playing this holiday golf, the fun part was trying to hit someone in the crowd with the ball because you can spot them out from the crowd because they would be given a cast and if the more you hit them the more casts they get.
