My 600-lb Life is an American reality television series that has aired on the TLC television network since 2012. Each episode follows a year in the life of morbidly obese individuals, who usually begin the episode weighing at least 600 pounds (270 kg), and documents their attempts to reduce their weight to a healthy level. Update episodes, called "Where Are They Now?", feature one or more previous patients, picking up a year or more after their original episodes aired.
Patients are placed under the care of Iranian-American Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as simply "Dr. Now"), who first has them attempt losing weight on their own by following a strict diet, and then depending on the patient's progress may offer gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to further assist in weight loss.

He sure is, He has been a Godsend for numerous people. Some people sadly flat out refuse to help themselves thinking that a surgery will magically cause instant weight loss, they will look like models with zero effort on their end. Dr Now will be 80 in Oct and still going strong, I hope he writes a book about working with severely morbidly obese people.

@winniethepoohandeeyore2 He even provides the hard truth to those stubborn ones. It amazes me. People tend to back off when met with resistance and that stubborn personality. He snaps some out, but like you said, some can't be helped. I believe his hard truth approach should be taught in colleges for people earning their doctorate. Can't save them all, but Dr. Now seems to save more.

Why do these people think their food addiction becomes more manageable just because they'll get a smaller stomach? It is incredibly common for bypass patients to switch to drugs or alcohol because the underlying trauma is never addressed. It bothers me that not every person on the show gets mental health counseling when literally every one of them needs it.

Because the surgery can potentially do two important things:
      1. Make their stomach MUCH smaller, so if they overeat, they get sick and throw up
      2. Sometimes (this is unpredictable, because it varies just like fingerprints and arteries do) the surgical removal also removes some of the person's body's ghrelin production, so their hunger gets reduced.

I don't know about other states, but here where I live, if one spouse is the certified caregiver of the other spouse, that caregiver receives SS benefits, nearly as much as if they were working a full-time outside job. They do have to show/prove that they have been trained and certified as a primary caregiver, they cannot just walk in and say so.
My next door neighbor, the wife, is her husband's primary caregiver, certified, so she receives benefits from SS. They aren't overweight, though; he has a degenerative spinal condition and he had to retire at an age that was too young for Social Security benefits, so he had to take SSD.
The ginormous one is also typically on SSD (which Social Security should not be doing). They also receive SNAPS/food stamps, Medicare and Medicaid (and again, should not), they raid food banks to get free food, they buy other food from places like the Dollar stores, getting the absolute cheapest junk there is, etc.

    1. ACCOUNTABILITY! Regardless of what happens, I am responsible for what I eat.
    2. My will to live tastes better than any food.
    3. Simply eat less and slowly weened myself off of certain foods. For example, if I'm craving something instead of eating a troth of it. Smaller portions of it.
    4. Drink more water, even if it's flavored water, versus soda and juices.
    5. Incorporate fruits & vegetables.
    6. And lastly....Move! Wiggle feet, kick legs, lift arms. Simply move if possible. Something is better than nothing, and build yourself up.

I have noticed that there seems to be a high level of narcissism with many of these patients - they are self-obsessed, and they still behave like children and want everyone around them to serve them entirely. Shannon is one of the best examples of it. She focuses WAY too much on issues in her childhood - which nearly all of these patients do. They are adults - this woman is middle aged - yet they talk on and on about events that happened when they were seven and how that explains all of the bad choices they make as adults. It’s not helpful and seems to be a psychological crutch for them. They have a toddler-like relationship to food, staring at it and just wolfing it down, and they throw tantrums like toddlers. Sad.
