How are these opened for cleaning and inking?

Not easy. Case is secured by a screw under the fare selector knob. Might be able to access roller via the printplate window or route change window. Body of machine was held together by shear screws for security. These were screws that were tightened to a point where head sheared off leaving top of screw with no indent so conductors couldn't access internal counters.

@@DaveInBridport Thanks for responding. I thought it was with a special spanner that was made for these machines. I see two screws behind fare selector knob. Now how do I take fare selector knob off? Might be secured too. Might just leave it. Might regret tampering beyond repair. It was just to clean inside and inking. Thanks.

The ink-roller is located below the print-drum, but on the side which is closest to the operator when using the machine. On a London Transport Gibson, you can't get to it without drilling a slot in any security screws, etc. and removing parts of the cover. I have seen some non-London Gibsons with an opening on the back for ink-roller access, but that came with the 'price' of ink 'leaking' out, as there will be some ink-splashing inside the machine from a freshly re-inked roller.
If you decide to go ahead, then the next challenge would be the ink: do NOT attempt to use a water-based ink as that will cause rust to appear inside the machine.

@@PerCPH2200 Thankyou very much for your response. After what I've heard and with your advice, I may just leave it alone.
I thought there was a tool, a sort of large G-shaped spanner that was used for opening. I knew that LT were not the only users, but didn't know other Gibson A14s were slightly different, as described, Thanks alot.
