When the lettuce seeds are ready, I cut the entire flower top off, put it upside down in a paper bag and shake, shake, shake!! Open the bag, remove the flower top skeleton, and wha-la: a bag of fresh, new lettuce seeds!

Might you kindly mention how do you know; what is it we ought look for please.. is it when they start to show the fluffy part of flowers/end of life before they go?
I might be a bit late in uk.. been so busy harvesting crops & gathering carrot, nasturtium, dill, corriander, calendula, french marigold and countless other seeds.. garden full, whilst getting my herbs, legumes, and tincture recipes ready & have ONLY just thought of lettuce seeds. We love to grow several different lettuce all year round in makeshift greenhouse(s) around the places where we get best light on the south coast 😊🌟✌🏾

This is my first year growing lettuce, I was told it won't be ready to eat for another month yet, and right now it's late May, I planted it about a month ago from starts and it took off! Ik once lettuce goes to seed it gets bitter, and ik you can cut lettuce leaves as you need them as long as you don't cut all the leaves and leave the main shoot with leaves attached, cut and come again.

Can they be planted in the bulb? I'm assuming so seeing it becomes dry, fragile so it shouldn't be like the seeds inside don't get water. Been enjoying your channel...but when it comes to growing my own also...really wish what I have out front was in the backyard in some sort of raised bed with some sort of irrigation. Trying not to waste water but still give it enough throughout the entire day. Are there any sort of irrigation set ups via an app? Trying to water during the morning or at night so the plants can use the water without it evaporating. Plus it's just too hot out some days. While growing has been helpful on a personal level, it's also been fun planting/collecting fruits & vegetables with my daughter.

Sooo informative! Question: for mizuna & arugula seed pods, can I cut plant and let seed pods dry out on their own or do i have to wait until they dry out in the garden? If I do the latter, I risk "losing" tons of spent seeds that'll replant themselves on their own again--which I don't want to happen.

Hi there Jeff, I hope you see this. I have a mess of varieties to close. My question is I thought he was growing a green bell pepper then it turned yellowish on one side . When I went to hollow it under top is where nearly all seed are and they look like they started molding. Blueish I guess.. my eyes are so poor. What am I doing?

If lettuce variety from which you harvest seed is a hybrid, the harvested seeds will produce varying results, correct? So you want to harvest seed from an heirloom, open-pollinated variety?

You are correct Dennis. But as a non-fruiting crop, its less important than say tomatoes or peppers.

I’ve never saved lettuce seeds mainly because so many seeds come in a packet and they last a long time! I grew a fall crop of solar flare and black seeded Simpson. Right now they’re sitting outside in my cold frame where I’ve left them all fall and now winter (mild). What can I expect from these plants now that I quit harvesting from them?

Hi, This is my first year having a fruit and vegetable garden. My boston lettuce has completely bolted and I gathered the seeds from one of the pods, but they were white. Does that mean my seeds are not ready?

Yes, as long as you start with an heirloom variety and don't cross pollinate.
