Thanks for the great stories Gene, I really enjoy them! I was always a huge NASCAR fan myself.......from the early 70's all the way until they destroyed our once beloved sport around 2008 ( give or take a couple years. ) I never knew you & Ronnie knew Lee Roy Yarbrough. I always heard stories about how great of a driver he was. I remember Junior Johnson saying Lee Roy was the best driver he ever knew.
Living in Indianapolis I full well know the saga of Lee Roy. He stacked up a factory Gurney Eagle at the Indy Speedway in 1971. Broke the car in half and jammed the magneto thru the seat an into his back. This was Lee Roy's introduction to pain medication which made the underlying infection worse. He was a top notch driver in both NASCAR and Indycar's. Dan Gurney did not hire slouches. Lee Roy had the inaugural California 500 in the bag but ran out of fuel with like 8 miles to go.
Gene, when I was a young boy in the 70’s my dad would take me to the Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron Ga, just south of Macon….We saw the Allison Brothers race. At one time it was on the nascar circuit. But what really made the raceway famous is that The Atlanta Pop Festival was held there. The Allman Brothers made their debut and acts like Jimi Hendrix played…😉
