    2:26 this is true. Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’ was a faithfully contemporary r&b album but bc she’s white and branded as Pop Star, it was only nominated in Pop categories. Even if JB & AG’s teams could successfully submit them for r&b categories, that’s also dicey, bc then Ariana and Justin could be accused of “robbery”, “erasure” or “whitewashing” the category same way Macklemore was accused after he won rap Grammys over Kendrick.

    I really appreciate your points, because I complain about this shit all the time! A lot of people do not understand genres, and the fact that just because something is popular does not make it pop music. Yes, the word pop is short for popular, but it’s also a genre of music that has a specific type of vocals and instrumentation.
    I say all the time that Ariana Grande fundamentally is an R&B singer. Adele is a soul/jazz singer. Justin Bieber was literally discovered by fucking Usher, and the bulk of his music is R&B. Bruno Mars is funk, r&b, and soul 90% of the time.

    All your examples are spot on. All your claims are valid. All your reasons seem reasonable. Not quite. In fact they ignore the biggest reason: when you are asking for affirmation from a wider audience, the results will not favor the minorities. It's not just black and white or just in music or arts. It happens in sports, business, technology, everywhere. Ask elite soccer players from Africa playing in European leagues. They earn a fraction of comparable talent.
    Grammy's tried to address this problem by creating categories that can reward minority genres, niche categories, real experts. Or else not a single black person will win anything. It's called stratification. That's why they have Country, Hispanic, and Global categories.
    The people running those categories are African American. They do the separations, selections, nominations, and voting. Rightfully you should ask them about why Tyler's Igor was in that category. Here's a hint: they wanted to make sure he went home with an award. No other category would've earned him an award.
    One last example: the year Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, they gave it someone nobody ever heard of. Gandhi never won the Nobel and to this day the committee regrets.

Yes, Midnights was phenomenal and it got the numbers NO ALBUM DID Of the year did but still.. quality wise, SOS was amazing. Also Adele winning Aoty for 25 was really a bummer like Midnights. Lemonade was so critically acclaimed and deserved the win. Yet, i am not mad at Taylor or Adele, they didn't choose their win. It's the recording Academy... They just never diversify!!

    It's much worse than that. The first metal/hard rock award was in 1989. It's not only late, but the awards never got it right from the beginning. The first rock album award was in 1995 and again it rarely gets it right. The best blues album started in 2012 and ended in 2016. The first traditional blues album award started in 1983. The Grammy Awards are not trend setters in finding top music in their genres when the award shows don't even recognize these genres until after they aren't popular. Then to top it off, many of the voters don't listen to other genres so they just pick acts at random with famous acts getting first dibs.
    Are the Grammy awards really that important? Not really. Many famous acts were not nominated and or didn't win such as Jimi Hendrix. Joe Bonamassa has had more number one blues albums of any artist and has three nominations and no wins.

    I don’t disagree with anything you said, so I apologize if I sound dismissive. I just wish to point out that there are even more problems with the silliness that is the Grammys, which is why no one cares about them. For example, no Heavy Metal album has ever been nominated for Album of the Year. Ever. This is despite the fact that Metallica made two unassailable masterpieces, Master of Puppets and And Justice For All, and Guns N’ Roses made one of the greatest debut albums in the history of rock and roll. Other legendary bands with zero nominations include Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Van Halen, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, The Clash, and Iron Madien. And let’s not forget about great Black artists like Jimi Hendrix and Public Enemy. The Grammys have always been about safe middle-of-the-road pop. And they always will be.

    • @nattertube
      @nattertube  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    It is about the categories!!!!! They strategically will keep Black people in Black categories. So when it comes to the race for album of the year, there are people that will purposely not vote for certain types of music because of bias. It has been 20 years since a hip hop album has won album of the year. Do yall think there is no hip hop album released in the past 20 years that is deserving of the album of the year award? Not To Pimp a Butterfly or MBTDF or Take Care ... so many albums.

    My big complaint about best album, is that for a Black artist to win, they usually have to do something groundbreaking. Like Songs in the Key of Life. No one else was really sounding like Stevie Wonder at that time, or Thriller for obvious reasons. But white artists can win with just a normal album that's 'good'. Just look at Taylor Swift, I'm not going to comment on the quality of her music, it's not my style, maybe it's great stuff. But no one is saying that her music is groundbreaking, it's not going to influence the next generation of artists. But if you look at Black winners, they are typically unusual or exceptional.

    The albums that weren't even nominated really surprised me. It's so messed up. I agreed with every point you made. It's probably just a bunch of old white people and they don't seem to really care in the voting process....this is unrelated but I feel like many people should have won other than Taylor Swift for the best music video award during the 09 VMAS. I just wanted to mention that. There were other videos that seemed way more creative in my opinion, such as Katy Perry's music video for Hot N' Cold. I liked the wedding, and the revenge theme. I enjoy some of Taylor's music and all, don't get me wrong. It just feels as if this voting process is so unfair in many aspects all together. The industry itself. It's ridiculous.

    It’s not just against the black artists. They separated the non-English speaking artists, even with K Pop artists out selling, out performing, extremely meaningful music they (whomever, they is) are not allowing any nominations for them. It’s a payola game, rigged system yet it flourishes! Streaming, awards, all rigged and it’ll stay that way. Unless and until there’s another system developed but…it’s all about $ and not about the artists or music. But…why is the Grammy’s considered do prestigious? They’re being called out more and more these days but dk if that’ll do anything. Personally I think they should be called out more! Thank you for sharing.

    Hopefully they don't end up putting a literal racial quota, like the Oscars. Awards shows are soft-headed enough as it is without them coming up with "solutions" that ARE legitimately racist. "Living Colour" won their awards legitimately and I don't want asterisks to have to be attached to every award a Black artist I like recieves due to an inescapable regulation being forced on them by racist "activist" busybodies.
