Wayne, I have put off building a deck for 3 years because I didn't know how to do the stringer. I finally built one yesterday and was just going to buy prefab stringers. Then I realized that it would be a lame way to go because one of the stairs would be different. So I watched this video and I just got done making my stringers. They turned out great. I used my square with clamps like you showed. Thanks!!!

Excellent video. I am an English carpenter so we don't do the amount of framing that you do in the US. We do a lot of fitting of prefabricated items such as stairs and things so it's not very often we get to fab up a stair stringer ourselves. I have done this myself when fitting decking etc and I have, in the past, always referred back to my old apprentice text books until utube came along. I worked on camp america many moons ago doing maintenance and building new cabins etc but when you are not doing something on a regular basis it's always good to do a quick refresher. I must say this is the most concise example I have seen to date. Everything you need to know in real time with no fumbling contradictions! Top notch, many thanks, Paul Bucky UK.

I was mentally challenged at this due to tbi's I've had. So I went to the store bought a stringer that met code and some stock lumber that would meet code and traced the stringer that met my rise and tread. I poured a platform to have a solid base and bolted a cross bar at the base and knotched my stringer bottom to catch that bottom bar to prevent hopefully from ever losing integrity. Without this video I wouldn't have even thought to do that so thanks for recommending practicing and tracing. Utilized it to match my needs. Soon will be installing the treads. I used simpson hangers and rated screws. Made it much easier for me.

Thank you, Wayne, for doing this video - useful information for free is always appreciated. I'm a middle-aged woman who is just trying to learn "how-to" and
I need all the help I can get. I just did my first stringer of four today, and it took me
awhile because the bottom step to needed to be level with the landing it butts up
against, and the top stair needed to be level with the top of the deck, as the apron
board is only 6" wide on the existing deck. I did it, thanks to you! Thanks!!!

As a person with with a learning disability i have to say that this video was very informative, and easy to understand. One thing i recommend is if you are doing the layout template on a piece of scrap make sure it is perfectly square first before even starting the layout. Better than scrap use a 1 X 12 piece of pine, or hardboard. Personally i found it easier, and more accurate just to layout the stringer without the template, but the template is great for sampling the layout before deciding.
