You know... I wanted to say this on multiple comments but... Antivaxxers aren't causing these outbreaks, as was pointed out in this article more than half the cases are caused by people that aren't getting the vaccines because of either religious reasons, or lack of ability to get vaccines, or both, Amish. They even go into detail how these outbreaks are smaller than you think only taking place in mostly a single city. In truth vaccines for stuff like the flu only have a coverage of 30 percent of flu viruses that will appear that season, its likely that you'll still get the flu even if you still get one. So I see a lot of people saying "parents that don't get their kids vaccinated should be charged with neglect" but really getting a vaccine has minimal benefits for some things, and when a virus has literally been nearly eradicated from the entire country you tend to not need a vaccine for that anymore either because logically it isn't cost efficient. In the grand scheme a minority of people against vaccines makes little difference in the blanket immunity of the entire country.
I think that's the general sentiment. These people are putting their kids and communities at unnecessary risk (infectious disease), based on a theory which has little scientific evidence to support it (vaccines cause autism).

I am 100% pro-vaccination, but I don't think that mandatory vaccinations are a good idea for two main reasons. Firstly, I think that people should have the freedom to opt out. This just comes from my general premise of consent, and that the government shouldn't be allowed to put something in your own body against your consent. This could come with strings attached though, such as if you want to send your child to a public school then that requires them to be vaccinated. Though this creates the problem of separating those children who aren't vaccinated into a group, a group which would have virtually zero herd immunity and could be a recipe for disaster. Secondly, I think that mandatory vaccines would just add fuel to the fire. It would fit perfectly into the anti-vaxxers heads that vaccines are a conspiracy against them. I can't say for sure, but I imagine this would lead to a lot of outbreaks, families living off the grid and a lot of money, time and resources spent trying to crack down on potentially thousands of families who would go to the Earths end to stop them and their children from becoming vaccinated. Personally, I think the best way to combat anti-vaxxers would be for more states to allow kids to walk into a clinic and get vaccinated themselves without their parents knowledge or consent. Combining this with a public awareness campaign (such as the recent rise in anti-vaxxer memes) would allow kids to become vaccinated safely without their anti-vaxx parents having to get involved.
All fine and that but there are cases where childs cannot be vaccinated due to their immunesystem overreacting or it being too weak. These childs depend on herd immunity and can't do anything themselves, they are the real and innocent victims of the antivax movement.

In summary: a few communities in USA didn't get vaccinated for religious reasons or due to not believing the doctors, but measles doesn't affect the vaccinated people outside these communities, as they have herd immunity (the fact that they are all immune stops the spread of the disease).

I had Measles as a kid and it wasn’t fun. Also somehow missed getting Chicken Pox as a kid and didn’t get it until I was an adult while serving in the military while stationed in Japan. So I see a lot of people saying "parents that don't get their kids vaccinated should be charged with neglect" but really getting a vaccine has minimal benefits for some things, and when a virus has literally been nearly eradicated from the entire country you tend to not need a vaccine for that anymore either because logically it isn't cost efficient. In the grand scheme a minority of people against vaccines makes little difference in the blanket immunity of the entire country.

Vaccinations *has* to be mandatory. Don't allow non-vaccinated people to be in any public area (unless it's for medical reasons, of course)
If you have the vaccine it shouldn't matter. If other people wanna be dumb let them. I just don't wanna give the gov't precedent to force putting things in our bodies.
I am 100% pro-vaccination, but I don't think that mandatory vaccinations are a good idea for two main reasons.
Firstly, I think that people should have the freedom to opt out. This just comes from my general premise of consent, and that the government shouldn't be allowed to put something in your own body against your consent. This could come with strings attached though, such as if you want to send your child to a public school then that requires them to be vaccinated. Though this creates the problem of separating those children who aren't vaccinated into a group, a group which would have virtually zero herd immunity and could be a recipe for disaster.
Secondly, I think that mandatory vaccines would just add fuel to the fire. It would fit perfectly into the anti-vaxxers heads that vaccines are a conspiracy against them. I can't say for sure, but I imagine this would lead to a lot of outbreaks, families living off the grid and a lot of money, time and resources spent trying to crack down on potentially thousands of families who would go to the Earths end to stop them and their children from becoming vaccinated.
Personally, I think the best way to combat anti-vaxxers would be for more states to allow kids to walk into a clinic and get vaccinated themselves without their parents knowledge or consent. Combining this with a public awareness campaign (such as the recent rise in anti-vaxxer memes) would allow kids to become vaccinated safely without their anti-vaxx parents having to get involved.
All fine and that but there are cases where childs cannot be vaccinated due to their immunesystem overreacting or it being too weak. These childs depend on herd immunity and can't do anything themselves, they are the real and innocent victims of the antivax movement.

In summary: a few communities in USA didn't get vaccinated for religious reasons or due to not believing the doctors, but measles doesn't affect the vaccinated people outside these communities, as they have herd immunity (the fact that they are all immune stops the spread of the disease).

I had Measles as a kid and it wasn’t fun. Also somehow missed getting Chicken Pox as a kid and didn’t get it until I was an adult while serving in the military while stationed in Japan.
