This was my favorite movie as a kid. Now, at 35 years old and a Class 1 Railroad Conductor it really hits me as to how much this movie meant to me. Never give up…

This was my favorite book as a child and theme of perseverance and belief in myself engrained deeply from it. I didn’t know they made it into a movie until it came to mind tonight, excited about bitcoin, which influences the opening of new crypto that will save my life. I’m takiking it as a sign! I also loved, loved, Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang. Both influenced my life greatly. I’ve been an entrepreneur my entire life since preteen.
Disabled by nerve gas, the fighting spirit has served me welll By the way, The Little Engine That could was released 1930. I was born 1963. I must go watch the movie now! The book is GREAT to instilll strength of character, discipline, fortitude, posativity, resourcefulness, strategy, determination, endurance, and of course, belief in one’s self despite naysayers and NEVER giving up. I can’t think of another book that remotely instills and teaches so much to stay with a child through their life - except the Bible.

I still can't believe I remember this, I never had the tape, but I've watched this when I was in Pre-K in Colorado before moving to Missouri. I also read the book, I feel like this movie should be released on DVD/Blu-ray, other than VHS. As a matter of fact, this is something that should be watched for anyone that is wanting to stand out in the crowd, sense of empowerment, and individuality among the main characters. Also, with the female lead, this is a good influence for any girls that have a sense of independence.

There is just something about this movie that's hard to explain. It feels surreal to me, because it's one of my earliest memories. When that book opens up in the beginning, it feels like that's the story of your life beginning. Then you have dreams, take on challenges and overcome hardships just like Tilly did.
That probably sounds silly, but this movie meant allot to me growing up and it still does.

    • @enortness9454

I think this must've been one of the first movies I ever remember watching too; I must've driven my parents absolutely batsh** playing the VHS over and over again. I watched this movie randomly the day before I turned 13, so in a weird way the book at the beginning also reminds me of the end of childhood and the beginning of who you're gonna become.
Strange how stuff like this melds with your perception of the world.

As a young boy I loved this movie beyond words. It was my favorite movie for so many years. I still remember crying in pre-school because one of the kids made fun of it.
I am a reasonably well-adjusted adult now. I haven't even thought about this movie for at least 15 years. But my mom brought it up today and it I decided I would look it up for old-times sake. I am so glad I did. It touches my heart just the same all these years later :)

Jibreel Keddo same feeling and the worst is that i have been trying to find it for such a long time, asking my mum and grandma about this movie. We even went to the old owner of the vhs videoclub. I'm from Argentina and every time I was looking for it Thomas the train was appearing in the search results hahah so cool to find someone that shares that same feeling for a movie that encourage me as a little kid. Now hitchhiking around the world as an adult i can see the deep impact that a simple movie of not even half hour, made on my personality.

This movie came to my mind the other day and decided to watch it in certain scenes. I remember watching this over and over on the VHS tape when I was in grade school. This movie has always had a special spot tucked away in my mind, but when I revisit it as a grown adult, the life lessons ring clearer, and truer even more now. It might sound clichéd, or corny to some people, but I still enjoy watching it. Never give up when the mountain seems too big in front of you and when others doubt your ability and strength! ❤

Let me just say a few good things about the movie:
    What Makes This Actually Good:
    1. The Plot: It doesn’t deviate from the source material that much. In fact, the only time this does happen is to build suspense, and even that can be excused because the climax was fun in a lot of ways!
    2. Characters: Each of them act just like the book, but have an extra element of character about them. For example, we get to see why Tillie accept the job so easily, despite having no other reason.
    3. PETER CULLEN AND FRANK WELKER: Before you ask, yes, these two did play Optimus Prime and Megatron back in G1 Transformers. I don’t know. I think it’s interesting that they show up here. Back then, they may have been more common in the industry than they are now. Peter himself even had an appearance in fellow Hasbro movie, MLP The Movie (1986). On the matter of Frank, you may notice he voiced five characters. It doesn’t take much to know that he is talented with voice acting, as we know him for a lot of thing he outside big bad guys. It seemed only natural that he would play two characters in the same movie!
But yeah, this was just my excuse to talk about this childhood masterpiece, while also fanboy about two talented voice actors!

Thank you so much I forgot all about this it's been almost 19 years since I've seen this and now stumbling across it in conversation with friends and little pot and a good sound system, the music and voices floods my brain with the earliest memories I can recall in my early childhood. It's haunting. Really, thank you for adding this to you tube. I now remember so many memories I almost forgot about because of this. Haunting.

I loved this book and this movie because it showed the power of not letting your negative thoughts get to you before you try something, I just love the moral of the story. It amazing how all of the other trains were so negative and not willing to helo the toys, but there was 1 single train who was different and she didn’t let her negative thoughts get to her, and she was thinking that she could help the toys. I love this story, great job :)

I think this was one of the first little movies i ever watched. Was born in 1990 and i recently watched a video of a snowplow train, which triggered an ancient memory of this film. How amazing its on youtube, and with 3 million views. Great that others are watching it and showing it to their kids.
Im an actor and writer and this movie brought me to tears. Its like this movie is ingrained in my work ethic - with little Tillie believing in herself, one chug at a time. She overcomes not only others telling her she cant do it, but random obstacles nature throws at her along the way, even burying her. Finally, she gets a hug from her bird-friend and says "one more try". The number of times ive said that after hundreds of auditions where ive been rejected...it brought me to tears.
To the creators of this, if youre reading, thank you. You created an incredible piece of art that people, consciously or not, cherish dearly.

I remember watching this classic in pre school. That was over 15 years ago. We didn't have the luxury of watching it on TH-cam on a projector with audio through the classroom speakers. We watched it on a old vhs tape on a heavy television on a roller cart. Never in my life back then did I imagine I could watch the same movie on my phone

Came looking for this film after I had the memory unlocked after watching the new animation that just came out called "The Brave Locomotive" I highly recommend checking it out - it screams a modern retelling of this beautiful masterpiece that I remember watching over and over again on VHS as kid. You really can't beat the nostalgia and magic of something like this timeless classic for those lucky enough to have experienced it 20+ years ago. Whether it was the Scholastic book or on the screen, it still manages to capture the imagination of us 90s kids :*)

i also watched that one- i think the fact that "the brave locomotive"s train-character is also a small blue train, plus the two vultures sitting there, the steep hill, etc. -there were many things from that animation that reminded me of this old movie, which i have very fond memories of :3!

      Yes there’s actually three adaptations.
The 1991 version (which people consider be the best one)
      The 1963 version
      th-cam.com/video/Qe-J6O3zuBM/w-d-xo.html
      And the 2011 version
      th-cam.com/video/aqdFbLu_Cvc/w-d-xo.html
(which I think it’s the worst one, I mean look at Little Engine, her design is ugly and her look doesn’t match in the book or the 1991 version)

Memories came flooding back to me especially since I took a ride on the little engine herself at Bryson city on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad back in the early 2000s it was a glorious time. But it wasn't until 26:12 when Tillie blew her whistle that tears came down my eyes. Oh how time flies I'm very happy that we have the railways of crotonia now other wise I would never have remembered that wonderful movie today.

Some rare versions do make the Little Engine male ("The Royal Engine" comes to mind as an obscure example), but most incarnations make her decidedly feminine (and in the two films, of the tomboy variety, voiced by Kath Soucie as Tillie in 1991 and Alyson Stone as simply Little Engine - aka Peanut Roaster, Shunter, Kid, etc. from the bigger engines - for the 2011 CGI remake that has our title blue heroine actually *gasp* doubt her abilities and even almost give up when the villainous Nightmare Train surprisingly convinces her to hand over her cargo - real world boy Richard & the living toys, who could only talk in the land of dreams - when she breaks down due to a busted boiler and water leakage, only for Richard and the toys to escape the Nightmare Train's cargo hold car, repair Little Engine back to working order, and be off back on their way. Of course, when the Nightmare Train sees this, he flies into a rage and tries to knock Little Engine off her track, which is attempted murder in a kids' film (but I guess, it's no different than the mountain itself seemingly trying to destroy Tillie in the 1991 film, only for her fighting spirit to spark her back to life so she could finish her mission, but except more excessive because it's another train trying to kill one of its own, because one train is good and has a noble heart, whilst the other is corrupt and evil, wanting to cause misery and woe in the world), only for her to pull the whole switch-the-train-tracks gag on the Nightmare Train (sending him into a lowland location with a broken track with no way out that's surrounded by mounted walls on all sides, thereby making any sort of escape essentially impossible, unless he were to back out the way he came in, which he couldn't do, since he came in on a downhill incline and it's practically impossible for a train to reverse itself back uphill once it's started in a given direction, which is why they need enough track to get them from one point to the next, as they cannot go in reverse well once they start going forward).

Another thing you should know(if you have not noticed it already) is that the engines in this movie have different wheel configurations than the ones they have in Ruth Sanderson’s illustrations. For instance, in this movie, Tillie has a 4-2-2 configuration while in most of the books, including Sanderson’s version, she is a 4-2-4. Farnsworth has a Bo-Bo configuration in this movie while in Sanderson’s version he seems to be a 2-10-4. Georgia and Pete both have a 2-4-2 configuration in this movie while in Sanderson’s Book, Georgia is a 4-4-4 and Pete seems to be a 2-6-0. Jebediah is also a 4-2-2 in this movie while in Sanderson’s book he is a 4-4-0.

A great memory from my childhood! Plus revisiting this memory, I also discovered that Neil Ross (Tower, Doc and Panda) went on to voice another character from another one of my favorite "childhood" memories, Colonel Volgin from Metal Gear Solid 3!

When I watched this I began crying hysterically. it filled me with a sense of anxiety and despair and I dont know why.I had this movie as a toddler and I think it may be connected to same traumatic experience from my childhood. either way the feeling I got made feel like I was gonna die.

That's happened to me before when watching stuff from my early childhood. It's like a bad nostalgia.

A lot of stuff I watched as a kid consisted of trains, this and Thomas in particular. To this day I still can't really explain why in particular, but they've always fascinated me more than something like cars or planes.
Honestly, until only a couple days ago, I kind of wondered if this film was real or just something I kind of imagined on my train hype. Watching it again is definitely a trip down memory lane, really hope there's some place I can properly buy it in case of TH-cam issues, and just to kind of own something from my childhood.

As a kid I would have never imagined watching this movie on my own computer over the internet. This is still the BEST VERSION EVER by the way. Someone needs to HD remaster this. Video and sound.

Quite different from the book but still nostalgic at 26 years old!
I was obsessed with this, Thomas the tank engine, and Casey jr. from dumbo
