Great format. So many people are chasing a sub 3 (myself included) and this video makes it look more achievable (assuming the training has been done correctly). Keep up the good work!
hey I'm new on this channel! I am an Italian boy with a great passion for running. I saw the whole video and I want to say congratulations! keep it up ;)
Just a casual 2:51...! Loved the video Ben. I'm going to be visualising you running faster than my goal pace and making it look easy at Manchester marathon.
You are absolutely amazing! The pace you are going at is the same as the pace I go at the 5k! I'm only 14 though and really wanna persue running longer distances. You are an awesome inspiration for me!
Aw, thank you Jackyjess! When I was 14 I certainly didn't run very much and if I did my 5k time would have been well over 30 minutes! Keep running, keep trying lots of different activities and eventually you'll find the distance that works for you. I didn't start running seriously until I was about 32, so you've got soooo much time ahead of you! All the very best and hope you have an amazing festive season. Happy running!
Hi Ben, just want to say thanks for the helpful tips on this video (and other videos of yours). I ran my first marathon last week in 2.44, and watched this video twice in the days leading up to my race. Please keep making these great videos 👍
Another fab video. I have just started following you and Sarah over the last few weeks and I am slowly getting through the videos. They are really useful even for someone a lot slower, like me. I have done two marathons so far Brighton 4:45 and Milton Keynes 4:19. My goal is to run a sub 4 next year. Thanks again to you both.
The FOD Runner glad you liked it! Lucky with where my fitness is right now to be able to make a video like this.. only a few years ago this would have seemed an impossible dream time. With a bit of hard work you can get there too!!! Keep me in the loop with how you’re getting on.
I enjoy your race. I can do HM sub 2 for now and dream of going 3:30 FM one day, but first FM sub 4 first. Thank you for your tips and keep making awesome video Ben !
The GPS trackers (good ones, anyway) are more accurate of what you actually ran. You are unlikely to take the perfect line throughout the course to run the minimum (stated) distance... sometimes you can run considerably further, especially if running a crowded race where you have to constantly dart in between people.
I am loving your vidoes, i just subscribed :) I run pretty often but you've given me the confidence to train for my first marathon, so far halves has been my furthest!
Very helpful info! I hope to run my second marathon in 2019 and plan to BQ (3:35 or better). First effort was a month ago and was sub 4 plan....hit 3:43 with plenty of energy left. Following along for your tips. Your fitness level is incredible. You did the work!!!!!!
My goal is to run a sub-3. This video is golden! So much valuable info and very encouraging and inspiring to see you happy and talking through it! Incredible as it couldn’t have all been comfortable 😜👍💪🏆
Hi Ben, this was a fun video to watch as I'm currently using your training plan to train for this very marathon. Not sure I'd be able to talk as effortlessly as you do while running, and hopefully it won't be as cold on the day, but am looking forward to it.
Jordan Roth will try and do something in the future on that. I try to get one speed session in per week, so something like 6x1k, 5x1mile etc. Then some hill repeats every other week, then a longer run at the weekend, with alternating paces.. so something like 3k easy, 3k half marathon pace, 3k easy, 3k half marathon pace, 10k easy, 3k half marathon pace, 5k easy.. for a 30k run. Then the rest of the week is just filled up with easy runs about 138-144bpm. Hope that helps!
Great video Ben and a lot of useful tips! Bravo! Can you please recommend some exercises to stop slouching? I struggle to maintain straight posture especially during the longer runs.
Hi Zsolt.. I've never been asked that one before! I'd say you'd need to work on your core strength, so exercises targeting that area, then constantly visualising you have a helium ballon attached to your head as you run.. having that feeling that your body is being pulled up and helping you to run tall. All the best!
Some really useful tips in there Ben and also glad to see one or two things I do myself being recommended by an accomplished runner like yourself. I have tried to break down all races I do, from Parkruns to the one Marathon I've done thus far, into chunks and it generally seems to work. One thing I am interested in is how do you stave off boredom in longer races? I ran in a Half Marathon in the summer where I was essentially running by myself for most of the race as there were only about 200 runners plus there were next to no spectators - that I found tough and it's a problem I'm sure to face again in the future! Keep up the good work and great running!
Hey! Depends what you mean by longer I guess.. I've never got bored in a marathon. In the 100 milers I've done I'll chat to other runners around and listen to audiobooks / podcasts etc. Or I just think about various people and what they would be up to at that moment.. the mind can wonder pretty quickly! In smaller races where you are running by yourself it can be tough, but I just count down the KM's to the finish and it's over pretty quickly. Sorry I don't really have an answer as haven't really faced that issue.. my mind always seems to keep me occupied and happy. Good luck for your next race!
When you began running marathons, did you think you would be able to get to 2:25? Did your expectations and goals move as you hit your goals? Or did you always think you could hit those times?
Hello Michael. When I first started running marathons my only goal was to finish...I've got plenty of times around the 4 hour mark. It is only in the last couple of years that I've started to up my game with training and get better. Then maybe at the start of this year I thought that running under 2:30 might be possible!
Nice run... I like your video documentary. Even with the video and talking you are on 4.02 pace. Amazing... Keep it up bro Guess I can lean one or two things from you 🙂✌🙂
I'm currently training through the stinking hot dog days of summer here in Oz. We're talking 30+ every day. A nice chilly zero degrees sounds pretty damm good, actually
great contents as usual. so if I understood correctly: drink every 5k and take gel every 8k. the gels, how many grams are they (and brand of course)? a tip: for the next videos you may already insert subtitles in English since TH-cam's automatic subtitles are poor; this could help deaf members. Ben you're always the best!!!
I'd say drink a little bit at every water station... but only if you feel you need to, never force water down. Then gels every 30-35 minutes.. you'll have to workout exactly what distances that might mean for you. I do plan to add subtitles to future videos, I'm just learning about how to do that at the moment. Thanks for the comment, all the best!
Crazy cool video strolling along with a sub 3h marathon! Wild! Not even close to be your level but did Valencia 4 yrs back and may try Pisa this year. Other than the weather, is Pisa more difficult? I understand that the course profiles are supposedly similar? Thanks in advance.
looking to drop a low 2:30 at NYC this year. do you have any recommendations towards training plans to take a peak at i saw yours went down to about a 2:55. i did 2:39:40 ( so pretty much a 2:40 lol but it count's) at this past NYC marathon. it was my first marathon and i know i can run better felt i could post race. Im shooting big but i have a year to get all my ducks in a row.
Hello. I had a long sleeve top from Adidas underneath. Something like this www.adidas.co.uk/supernova-tee/CZ8719.html although I've had it for ages.. I do wear thermal base layers when it's below zero Celsius.. I would have liked to wear one in this race, but didn't take any with me from home. I would have still worn the jacket if I was racing.. it has lots of ventilation in it, so very breathable. I always struggle in the cold, so tend to be wearing more clothes than the average runner.
Hi Ben, really like your videos, they're really informative and you come across very well. I have a question. I ran a few half marathons over the past year and I've ran a couple of full ones in the past too. I'm wondering would i be crazy to run more than one over the next 12 months? How many is too many for a less experienced runner like myself to do in one year?
Some people have run a marathon every day of the year, where as most pro's will race just one. I'd say for a newer runner who wants to get out and run a few races then focus on a Spring and Autumn marathon, about 6 months apart ideally. Then you'll have enough time for decent recovery periods before you start training again. All the best and good luck!
Hi ben. Which short are you wearing? Salomon trail runner twinskin? I would prefer pockets in the short belt more than putting my gels into my race number belt.
Hey Francis! They are called the Salomon Sense Pro amzn.to/2QqOcZW I don't think Salomon currently make them, but hopefully they'll be returning next year.. as they are very good!
@@BenParkes cheers ben!!! that's exactly what i'm lookng for! maybe i can order it somewhere on the internet. i wish you a happy and successful new year.
In the video you mention not loading with too many races. What gap do you recommend between marathons to ensure you can perform at peak at one (or both)?
Nathan Mackay Hey Nathan. Everybody recovers differently.. which is dependent on a lot of factors, from sleep / diet post race to years of running built up in your legs. I’d say as a rough guide you need 4-6 weeks to fully recover from a hard marathon effort. Of course you can run and add fitness in between, but that’s a rough guide for how long it takes to get out your system. Of course Mo Farrah etc could recover far quicker than a first time marathoner.. but hope that gives you an idea. All the best!
When I got my first GPS watch about 3 years ago it was set up in KM and the two people who were starting running with me then were both from Switzerland so they naturally worked in KM. So I just went with it. I was so clueless back then and didn't even know I could change the units on the watch. But because I didn't know running with any unit, miles or KM... it didn't really matter what I chose. But now I find it just helps more in my sessions and can visualise things better when everything is in meters.. 400's, 800's, 1k reps, but each to their own, makes no difference I'm sure really!
eden8131 yeah.. I know! This was my original one, from my very first videos.. I need to make a new intro for general videos not part of a series. Will make one over the Christmas break!

Hey Ben, last weekend i ran the Valencia Marathon, i was aiming for sub 3h but after 30k mark i start breaking down, and end up with 3h02m wich was great for me and a huge PR. I will run another marathon in about 3 month, so what should i do to hold the pace longer then 30k? I train 3 month for this one with an average of 120k/week. Any advice? Thank you
I abseloutly love your content, its just so helpfull, i was wondering if you can shed some light on a few things for me that would be incredibly helpfull, (quick mention my goal is to run longer runs, half and full mara and eventually ultra one day way in the future :) ) im currently running and doing 65km past 2 weeks, but im afraid im doing to little, or maybe too much?( allthough i feel like 65km/week feels too easy/ i also dont wanna injure myself since im fairly new) ive been running consistently for a month now and before that off and on with running and weight lifting for about a year, im just overwhelmed with what zones i should train in and how often to use which zone in a week? I dont have a heart beat sensor but i have one comming in the next couple of days, as we speak im running 10km 5km and 20km (as my long run) on my 5km runs i go all in, i try to stay too the extend i can to stay in zone 4 on my 10km and zone 3 on my long run, I know its difficult to give an exact answer but what zones should i aim for throught my week and how many? Im also curious what you would recomend my miles/km to be each week as a beginner? and how long should my long run be? (i do run everyday) I know this is a long comment so if you have time to answer it i would appriciate alot, but if not keep doing what your doing your content is amazing, motivating and really helpfull!
thank you for this makes sense almost a full minute then your pace marathon so i know what pace i should be aiming now for my long runs thank you@@BenParkes
So I just watched a marathon that was 2:01:09 I believe. Now I believe a marathon is impossible for me, yes I see many people do them bigger and fatter than me I still stand by my statement. My question to you is you just ran an easy casual marathon and ran 2:51:00, could you try, push yourself to your limits of collapsing on the fishing line, and get a 2:00:00 or faster time, if not why not. Stop playing and run, stop talking and run. Show us how you do this stuff. Yes I bet you attract much more followers getting people from I should try to trying then at the top end because those people are probably already into the racing and are talking to the trainers and doing the running and weights and everything else that you decide will improve your finish times, me I just wish not to die and the two 5k I sort of ran have been enough :) OH, yeah thanks TH-cam no point is showing me recent videos go dig up videos from 2018. I just watched your wife run a marathon smiling the whole way, and then I see she runs 100-mile races, must mean a 26mile run should be far easier, but I have to imagine the pacing would be different, but again I'm just a blob that finds getting out of the house far too much effort these days.
dev E sorry you didn’t like the format.. Apart from at the start and the first few km, I always made sure there were no other runners around me when I was filming..I purposely went faster or slowed down to get into a gap so as not to put anyone off their race. My only goal of making the video was to offer an insight into running at sub 3 pace and to give out as many tips as I could think of while running to help everyone. The GoPro is so small in my hand I don’t think anyone would have really noticed unless they were right by my side, which as I say, I always tried to make sure they weren’t.
It was for me previously only a rumour that some people can run a sub three hour marathon “while talking”, but now I know this is a fact. Wow!
This was awesome! Imagine being passed by some dude filming and speaking rather calm.
OMG Ben, you looked so cool and relaxed going around at your pace, with such good tips. I would have passed at at half your pace. What an inspiration!

Hey. Cadence was 188 and stride length 1.31m
Awesome video!

how did you stabilize your GoPro while running?
didoma73 hey.. I’m just holding it in my hand.. this was on the newer hero 7, which has some really good stability settings.
Any advice? Thank you
Good job Ben and Sarah...but .... chips and cappuccino!!??! 🙀🙈😆
What pace do u do your long runs
Anywhere between 4:20/km and 5:00/km, depending on how I'm feeling that day.
thank you for this makes sense almost a full minute then your pace marathon so i know what pace i should be aiming now for my long runs thank you@@BenParkes
Bit slow for your usual Ben but I'm following all your posts at the moooo great inspiration) - looking for my third marathon (next year in Windermere)
Yes I bet you attract much more followers getting people from I should try to trying then at the top end because those people are probably already into the racing and are talking to the trainers and doing the running and weights and everything else that you decide will improve your finish times, me I just wish not to die and the two 5k I sort of ran have been enough :)
OH, yeah thanks TH-cam no point is showing me recent videos go dig up videos from 2018. I just watched your wife run a marathon smiling the whole way, and then I see she runs 100-mile races, must mean a 26mile run should be far easier, but I have to imagine the pacing would be different, but again I'm just a blob that finds getting out of the house far too much effort these days.
251 with a zone 2 heart rate? 🤯
I have an official man crush
Weird flex but ok
I can’t help but think how rude you were doing this next to people that were actually putting in their hardest effort. It’s honestly mocking them.
dev E I don’t think they would’ve been that upset. They would’ve been pretty focused
dev E sorry you didn’t like the format..
Ben Parkes a very respectful and thoughtful response! Many thanks for your generosity to your viewers’ comments!
