The government should be sued for allowing them to build there in the first place. It's like Vancouver being built on a flood plain, so large that it encompasses Chilliwack to the East, and Bellingham in the State of Washington to the South. Prime farmland because it was river bottom at one time.

To the layman what is a flood area and what isn't typically isn't obvious. I live 30 feet from the bow and in 2013 the river would have had to risen 30 more feet to threaten me. Meanwhile a place not a block away had to put up sandbags just to minimize damage. There's riverfront property that is at absolutely no risk and there's places two blocks from the river that flooded in 2013. But yeah I agree, if I'm building a 1 million dollar home, I'm looking into what will flood and what won't.

Yes. 95% of them were moved, first having the heavy bricks taken off the house and replaced at the final site. The others were demolished. This was due to a flood in 2013 (homes were built in a flood plan and designated flood zone). The builders never thought there would be a devastating flood that would wipe out an entire community. DUH! This was the 100 Year flood that they never thought would happen this early.. Homes were auctioned off with the missing information that one would have to MOVE the home to a piece of land that the bidder owned. Cost of moviing some of these homes was in the $60,000 - $90,000 range plus more. This was the first area I photographed when I moved to Calgary in 2013. Thanks to my cousin's story of the area. High River and Okotoks (where I moved to) are now thriving towns, with homes and communities being built every month. Now people want to move out of the city of Calgary due to high rent and home prices, and live 30 minutes away, in places like Okotoks and High River. I rent in Okotoks for $900 for a basement apartment with washroom, laundry facility and access to a full kitchen up stairs. While it's not all in one area of the house, I was paying $1,575 a month two years ago for a two bedroom with heated underground parking. My monthly expenses were $2,400 (rent included). The only creepy thing about this is weather modification. Silver iodide used to seed the clouds. I found young pilots logs on gallons of the stuff they took up and seeded with only 2 days before the flood of 2014 and when that flood hit, I went back to that login and gee whiz, mysteriously removed.

This video was taken about 7 years after the flood. This flood was crazy water was about 5 - 6 deep in some spots. Yeah the 15 min city thing is very sad... Can't see it working.
Looks like a well established neighborhood why not repair and rebuild the neighborhood? Makes no sense just to abandon the place over a 100 year flood. People here live on the ocean and they get flooded on average once every 20 years and they don';t run off and abandon their Homes. Crazy!
Well I think they are worried for another huge flood to happen is my guess. but yea I think it floods more often the once every 20 years... and it's really close to a river.
They’re probably abandoned because of the big flood we had here in June , 2013 I believe it’s destroyed a lot home and around the high reviver area was no exception a lot people lost everything due to the flood. No one parishes though so I doubt they’re haunted.just maybe very water damaged and no one is allowed there because the homes have black mold . Just sad all around.
this is in Joe Clarks' home area and old riding (Prime Minister and long time Member of Parliament in Canada). A Conservative area for sure, but the RCMP took the opportunity to BREAK IN to boarded up homes and grab the long guns. What??!! Alberta is basically the Texas of Canada when it comes to gun Rights! THAT is an interesting story.
What is going on in Canada, too many neighborhoods are being abandoned and bulldozed and sometimes the homes are pretty new but most are nice homes with beautiful landscaping.

Amazing the builder or owner of all them lots got away with selling them lots if they were in a flood plain. Town zoning laws here wouldn't allowed that.
The ones that can be moved are getting moved out to a different location and the rest are getting taking down. no one is moving into any of these homes some have very little damage and other have a lot.

No, they suffered the same amount of damage Also the brick had to be taken down. Then clean every brick by hand or put new brick on. One of my sons cleaned bricks for one of those houses in its new location. The people who bought ut wish to preserve the original brick and put it back on :)

They demolished a lot of them, but also auctioned many off. I know where 7 of them are now. 5 of them are with each other in a subdivision of 7 lots :)

Don't build on floodplains or unstable hillsides. Alberta is unforgiving to either outcomes... I.e. High River floods and Whitemud Road mansions sliding into the North Saskatchewan back in 1999...

Yes. They put them on ginormous trucks and transport them. I didn’t think it was a thing until my neighbor had it done. She built her parents a home on her property and when they both had passed away she had no use for it, so she sold the house and this masssssive truck came and picked it up to move it. Was strange to see

Not odd at all. The government bought them out because they were in a floodzone. Later the government auctioned the ones that were not too damaged and full of mold off and the new owners had to move the houses to new locations

Wow this truly is an insane video, I understand you stayed away from going inside any of these houses due to respect but have you ever done a follow up video where you have? I’ve never heard about this place, the flood or anything related to this place and I’ve lived in Alberta my entire life so this is pretty cool to me, almost feels like our own Chernobyl just without the radiation and Geiger counter’s, this place really still looks amazing I’m astonished people were forced to leave and never return, and I’m even more surprised that like people didn’t just stay like over 1000 people did in Chernobyl! These houses for the most part still look incredibly, hardly any damage at all on the outside
Yes this place was very cool... I would have loved to see inside some of the homes but not worth the fine. Although I have checked out other neat places in Alberta in the South and the difference was with them they were either already destroyed by nature. I normally even knock on the door just to make sure there isn't anyone else there. I would kill to take a little trip through Chernobyl and other places that are Abandon on that size of scale.

The government bought out all the homes and part of the requirements I guess was the yards were to be kept cut so that when they went to auction they would be able to get top dollar although I am pretty sure some of them were sold around 50k. Thanks for watching hope you enjoyed my video.
That area of high River is not a creepy area , that part of the town got flooded a few years back and nothing bad happened their except for a flood and other people would agree that you should do your homework before doing a video of the area
It was said that the railway trestle on the north side of High River was a contributor to the vast flooding there in 2013. Trees/logs would jam up against the trestle which would cause the river to back up some. There had been smaller floods in previous years, but not as bad. This was the last straw for many and it was decided that the unused bridge was to be removed and scrapped, Oct 2013. I went with an associate a couple of weeks after the flooding and we did some photography (documenting) around the area and it looked like a war zone. We met some RCMP officers cruising around keeping a visual for trespassers and looters. It wouldn't have surprised us if there were surveillance cameras set up throughout some neighbourhoods.
The rains that fell in such a short period on the mountains were the cause not log jam’s! There was just way to much water fell that the ground could not absorb hence the biggest flood in recorded history around this area of Alberta
@@Canadiantrucker696 - I didn't say the log jams were the cause, but were a contributor. Even if there wasn't a log jam on the bridge, there would have been flooding, but maybe lesser in size? Who knows, I'm not an expert and wasn't there during the flood. The fact that people who lived there said over the years, log jams on the railway trestle were a problem and they were upset and tired of it causing bigger issues. I'm only repeating this gathered information from this and their opinions and also from news stories. Yes, it was frozen ground plus an overabundance of rain (mountain snow melt runoff) that caused the huge flooding, but the trestle had to go. Calgary got it's share as it suffered extensive damage and it took years of recovery and reconstruction. Any low lying area such as floodplain's downstream were affected as river waters rose and redirected it's water flow.
These properties were condemned because of the flood. There was massive mold plus not to mention the sewage that destroyed these homes. The town was under water in 2013. People didn't choose to leave their homes they worked hard for. THEY WERE FORCED OUT BC OF DANGEROUS WATERS.
A lot being vacant is not the same as abandoned. No-one lives there but the yards are mown. No vandalism. Why did people leave ? Surely there would be some owners not willing to leave 🤷🏻♂️
They had to leave due to one year the water from the river near by flooded the whole area causing major damage to the insides of homes water was about 6feet deep and more in some area's. I would imagine the black mold is really bad in them.

There are subdivisions in Houston that have flooded two and three times . They have had to be completely gutted and redone . Sometimes the government buys the people out but not often . It's a real mess .

They demolished a lot of them, but also auctioned many off. I know where 7 of them are now. 5 of them are with each other in a subdivision of 7 lots :)

Don't build on floodplains or unstable hillsides. Alberta is unforgiving to either outcomes... I.e. High River floods and Whitemud Road mansions sliding into the North Saskatchewan back in 1999...

Yes. They put them on ginormous trucks and transport them. I didn’t think it was a thing until my neighbor had it done. She built her parents a home on her property and when they both had passed away she had no use for it, so she sold the house and this masssssive truck came and picked it up to move it. Was strange to see
Yup they move them in sections you can see in one part of the video where they got the garage of one home on a trailer.

Yeah a couple were around the million dollar mark... some of them sold at auction for 50k or around that.
Not odd at all. The government bought them out because they were in a floodzone. Later the government auctioned the ones that were not too damaged and full of mold off and the new owners had to move the houses to new locations

Wow this truly is an insane video, I understand you stayed away from going inside any of these houses due to respect but have you ever done a follow up video where you have? I’ve never heard about this place, the flood or anything related to this place and I’ve lived in Alberta my entire life so this is pretty cool to me, almost feels like our own Chernobyl just without the radiation and Geiger counter’s, this place really still looks amazing I’m astonished people were forced to leave and never return, and I’m even more surprised that like people didn’t just stay like over 1000 people did in Chernobyl! These houses for the most part still look incredibly, hardly any damage at all on the outside
Yes this place was very cool... I would have loved to see inside some of the homes but not worth the fine. Although I have checked out other neat places in Alberta in the South and the difference was with them they were either already destroyed by nature. I normally even knock on the door just to make sure there isn't anyone else there. I would kill to take a little trip through Chernobyl and other places that are Abandon on that size of scale.

The government bought out all the homes and part of the requirements I guess was the yards were to be kept cut so that when they went to auction they would be able to get top dollar although I am pretty sure some of them were sold around 50k. Thanks for watching hope you enjoyed my video.

That area of high River is not a creepy area , that part of the town got flooded a few years back and nothing bad happened their except for a flood and other people would agree that you should do your homework before doing a video of the area
It was said that the railway trestle on the north side of High River was a contributor to the vast flooding there in 2013. Trees/logs would jam up against the trestle which would cause the river to back up some. There had been smaller floods in previous years, but not as bad. This was the last straw for many and it was decided that the unused bridge was to be removed and scrapped, Oct 2013.
I went with an associate a couple of weeks after the flooding and we did some photography (documenting) around the area and it looked like a war zone. We met some RCMP officers cruising around keeping a visual for trespassers and looters. It wouldn't have surprised us if there were surveillance cameras set up throughout some neighbourhoods.
The rains that fell in such a short period on the mountains were the cause not log jam’s!
There was just way to much water fell that the ground could not absorb hence the biggest flood in recorded history around this area of Alberta
@@Canadiantrucker696 - I didn't say the log jams were the cause, but were a contributor. Even if there wasn't a log jam on the bridge, there would have been flooding, but maybe lesser in size? Who knows, I'm not an expert and wasn't there during the flood.
The fact that people who lived there said over the years, log jams on the railway trestle were a problem and they were upset and tired of it causing bigger issues. I'm only repeating this gathered information from this and their opinions and also from news stories.
Yes, it was frozen ground plus an overabundance of rain (mountain snow melt runoff) that caused the huge flooding, but the trestle had to go.
Calgary got it's share as it suffered extensive damage and it took years of recovery and reconstruction. Any low lying area such as floodplain's downstream were affected as river waters rose and redirected it's water flow.

These properties were condemned because of the flood. There was massive mold plus not to mention the sewage that destroyed these homes. The town was under water in 2013. People didn't choose to leave their homes they worked hard for. THEY WERE FORCED OUT BC OF DANGEROUS WATERS.
A lot being vacant is not the same as abandoned. No-one lives there but the yards are mown. No vandalism. Why did people leave ? Surely there would be some owners not willing to leave 🤷🏻♂️
They had to leave due to one year the water from the river near by flooded the whole area causing major damage to the insides of homes water was about 6feet deep and more in some area's.
I would imagine the black mold is really bad in them.

There are subdivisions in Houston that have flooded two and three times . They have had to be completely gutted and redone . Sometimes the government buys the people out but not often . It's a real mess .

Well I think some of them didn't get damaged that badly and those ones got Auctioned off I see one bid on one for 50k which is a steal for a $450,000 dollar home.
