Those early Christines like Rebecca Luker, Patti Cohenour, Mary D'Arcy, Rebecca Caine, etc. are really extraordinary

    From husband DANNY BURSTEIN:
“This is a text I just got from Jessica Molaskey.
Thanks, Jess. It means the world to me. “
“There are no words. Only love right now for you and your family and our dear theater family. I don’t remember seeing the whole
Broadway community so gutted by a loss. Not ever. I guess because Becca seemed so other worldly, so born of a place that mere mortals only dream of. So full of light and genius. Yes genius when she opened her mouth. The music and love that poured out of her shining soul shall live forever. In a different time we would all gather on this Christmas Eve and hug you and drink something and sit shiva for your “shiska goddess” and remember stories. I can think of a story about 26 years ago when a troupe of actors went out to dinner in Southern California. We were a large loud table tucked in a corner of a restaurant. Someone, maybe it was our dear George, threw down the gauntlet to tell the dirtiest joke. I might have known one safe one. The winner of the evening was Becca who told joke after filthy joke until our stomachs hurt from laughing so hard. The jokes were somehow funnier coming out of that angelic human. I think she knew it.
The bottom line is we were better for knowing her. I guess that’s the whole point of this mysterious life. Leaving the joint a better place than before you got there. She sure did that. I know you have battalions of wonderful souls who love you. Just want to let you know that if you ever need a shoulder I’m here day or night. Who sleeps these days anyway. I love you.
    Xoxoxo Molaskey.
I was privileged to see & hear “Ms. Luker’s angelic voice” as Lily in THE SECRET GARDEN at the Saint James Theatre in 1991 & as Maria Von Trapp in the 1998 revival of THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the Martin Beck Theatre in NYC.
When I said earlier that we lost a lot of people this year...we indeed lost a LOT. We also recently lost NICK CORDERO (Bullets Over Broadway), MARIN MAZZIE (Kiss Me Kate, Passion, Ragtime) and ANNE REINKING (All That Jazz, Annie, Fosse). Broadway just got darker. R.I.P. to ALL WE LOST THIS YEAR.
I shed a tear for those who left us. So gutted...and destroyed watching Ms. Luker perform, proving once again the LOSS we have is great and irreplaceable. Ugh. 2020 can’t get over any sooner for me. It’s just too much....TOO MUCH.

I think, this is definitely a recording, and definitely a Christine that Emmy Rossum studied when she played Christine in the Phantom movie. There're a lot of similarities in style and technique to each of their 'Think of Me's. I just noticed that while I was litening and thought that was funny. Good job Emmy, you picked a good one to imitate. Rebecca Luker, you are awesome!

My only annoyance with Emmy is she whispered some of her notes instead of singing it straight.

I was lucky to watch Rebecca Luker in Phantom back in 1988. She was my very first Christine. I also loved her in The Secret Garden. RIP Rebecca Luker.

I disagree, Rebecca is far superior. I'm not just saying that because she's passed, she's a far more trained and better singer.

She has a uniqueness to her voice that stands out in her performance of Christine I'm not quite sure what it is but is definitely different , her portrayal is more mature therefore a more fullness and clarity. very pleasing indeed!

I agree! Rebecca seems closer to a full lyric soprano than a lyric coloratura or light lyric soprano, and I honestly like that quality.

I had the good fortune of seeing Becca in the role as well as 8 other Christine's and she is still my favorite one. This soundboard recording doesn't do her justice. Her soprano is so clear and just spectacular. She left this role and then continued to get all the big soprano jobs on Broadway for the next 15 years.

  • @Silver54ful

You are right. She has one of the most beautiful soprano voices I have ever heard. Yet she remains one of the most forgotten. To be honest, I prefer her to Sarah Brightman. One of my favourite performances of Think of Me. :)

I saw Rebecca Luker in Phantom back in 1989, didn't know who she was back then. Saw her again a few years later in The Secret Garden, and since then have seen her in a lot of stuff. Wonderfully beautiful voice; I've heard her sing without amplification at the Lenord Nimoy Thalia and she amazingly sounded better without amplification. Best performance was at the York in "Darling of the Day" or at the 92nd St with Sheldon Harnick. Saw her most recently at Cafe Carlyle with Howard McGillian, they did a great job with "They Were You" from The Fantasticks.

Are you referring to Sarah Brightman because no one thought she was good in the role. She was overlooked for awards and Newsweek said it best when they called her "Minnie Mouse on quaaludes." I saw Patti Cohenour who was the original alternate and she was wonderful....as always.

Can't say I disagree. I like Sarah but love Rebecca L, Claire Moore and the Canadian cast with Rebecca Caine as both vocalists and actresses. Also big news to share. Claire Moore is going to be Carlotta in Phantom on the West End this September! And Rebecca Luker will be the Fairy-Godmother in Rodgers & hammerstein's Cinderella around the same time. :)

It would be even better though if she was a household name. You hear the name Sarah Brightman and everbody knows who she is. I say Rebecca Luker to a random person on the street. All you get is "Who's that?" That's what i was getting at.
