I have a love/hate relationship with the Samurai Shodown series. Samurai Shodown left such a huge impression on me the first time I played it. I loved the level of detail put into its presentation, the unique pacing and mechanics that distinguished itself from other fighting games, and the high tension feel of each match. But every time I decide to play the game, I’m reminded how frustrating the CPU AI can be as enemies will often block, counter, and input read everything you do, with what feels like, 90% of the time at even the easiest difficulty setting. Given its history as an arcade game that’s meant to eat coins, it’s not surprising; however, it makes for a less than engaging experience.
Nakoruru is one of my favorite characters in the series and I won’t deny that her theme song is a huge factor. Banquet of Nature has a strong and memorable melody that encapsulates Nakoruru’s character, purpose and personality so well. I’ve wanted to remix this song for years, but couldn’t quite figure out how I wanted it to sound until these past 2 years or so. The two things I wanted out of this remix is to have it sound uplifting and to have it feel exciting. Banquet of Nature is probably one of my favorite songs that has come from an SNK game, right next to the main theme song for Psycho Soldier (which was rearranged/remixed countless times in The King of Fighters series). So I was super happy to hear both songs remixed in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As much as I love Terry Bogard in Smash, my heart skipped a beat when Mamahaha swooped in for the invitation letter (that was such a great trailer, but also such a tease).
The newest Samurai Shodown looks great with one last character on Season Pass 2 still yet to be revealed. I’m hoping it’s either Suzuhime or Rera.
