    As a european, electric trains are much Quiter, but vibrations often come from track quality (or lack thereof). some of this can be compilated for with beter suspension witch these cars probably have. the real benefits that people are going to see is the much faster trips due high average speeds due to the much higher acceleration that these electric trains can achieve. a traditional diesel train has one engine, one big motor pulling a lot of cars, the new trains, called emu's have a lot of smaller motors in every car, its like going from 2 weel drive to all weel drive but on steroids.

    The most important benefit that electrification brings, and that many people gloss over, is the enabling of far more frequent service due to the far superior acceleration and braking capabilities of electric trains. This is why BART, and generally mass transit railways with more than a century of history, are electric.

    • @IndustrialParrot2816
      @IndustrialParrot2816 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep and they have fantastic energy efficiency because of regenerative braking were the kinetic energy of the train is converted in electrical energy ande deposited on the catenary for other trains to use and this tech actually dates way back the Milwaukee Road electrification in 1915

      It's sad as a leftist to see that many Americans don't understand the utility of a full-scale American transportation revival. Not only just building and modernizing rail but also increasing road capacity at the same time to counteract the induced demand that building only one of each at a time succumbs to. Obviously more rail than road, though. There is way more that people agree on under the surface, and I hate how the media pushes the dumbest and most extreme to be the loudest.

      Then you got mad and called me “anti train” when I didn’t say anything that is anti train.
      Then I asked what makes these trains so special compared to other trains and you called me a troll.
      Granted, I am not a train expert. I am a pilot expert. Maybe you are, a train expert and if you do know what makes these trains “the future” as opposed to trains used in Europe.
      If someone came up to me and asked me “what makes the 787 so revolutionary compared to the 767”
      I could spout off a list of things that makes the 787 special as opposed to older aircraft instead of calling someone a troll because they think these trains don’t look so far ahead of trains used by say, the SNCF.
      By the way, I am also French, I know what a strong passenger rail network looks like so I am not just randomly claiming “oh US rail sucks because America” I have a benchmark and it happens to be a rail network that is looked pretty favorably on by most.

    It's time to extend Caltrain to Southern California (Los Angeles and San Diego) from city of San Francisco. It's really inconvenient to catch Coast Starlight either cross the bay at Emeryville or travel down to San Jose. In other words, one travels to east of the bay Oakland/Emeryville (Coast Starlight) and one travels west of the bay to San Francisco (Caltrain).

      Ummm, don't know how to tell you this, but Amtrak is one step ahead of you. They've already announced that they will be creating a new SF-LA service. I think they want to bring back the "Coast Daylight" name plate for that train. This will be the second direct Bay Area-LA train, third if you count the San Joaquins.
      The San Joaquins is an excellent train, and they're about to get brand new and also gorgeous Siemens trains. But the freight railroads blocked its passage to LA so you transfer to a bus for the last 20% of the trip. But it's faster than the picturesque coastal route even with the transfer!

      This wasn't done before because rail travel was practically abandoned in the US since the 60s. Nobody wanted trains so they went away or were maintained on life support. For the last 20-30 years Americans in general, but Californians in particular, have been liking rail more an more. California has invested like crazy in passenger rail for the last 30 years. It is true that BART is now upgrading to be more of a subway. The frequencies are set to practically double and there will be proper urban development at stations. But originally BART was just a souped up commuter system, even if it had incredible, luxurious amenities for a commuter train. It was, all things considered, an extremely successful concept that has spawned many copy-cats all around the world.
      It's just that the Bay Area has outgrown the original system and we now need a full subway in its place. The ridership is triple what BART was built for and the current upgrades to full subway operations are now sorely needed!

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TohaBgood2 The definition of rapid transit and commuter rail needs to be clarified. Commuter rail differs from rapid transit by:
      ● having (in most cases) a lower frequency of service
      ● having scheduled services (i.e. trains run at specific times rather than at specific intervals)
      ● sharing track or right-of-way with intercity and/or freight trains
      ● not fully grade separated (containing at-grade crossings with crossing gates)
      ● being able to skip certain stations as an express service due to normally being driver controlled
      Compared to rapid transit (or metro rail), commuter/suburban rail often has lower frequency, following a schedule rather than fixed intervals, and fewer stations spaced further apart. They primarily serve lower density suburban areas (non inner-city), generally only having one or two stops in a city's central business district, and often share right-of-way with intercity or freight trains. Some services operate only during peak hours and others uses fewer departures during off peak hours and weekends.
      Caltrain fits almost every aspect of a commuter rail system while BART does not. Caltrain uses San Francisco as its terminus as it brings in commuters from San Mateo and Santa Clara county to San Francisco during peak commuter hours. During off-peak hours, evenings, and weekends, service diminishes greatly. BART as a rapid transit system, on the other hand, connects the five counties of San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. San Francisco is not a terminus. A person can travel from Fremont to Concord without ever having to go through San Francisco. Caltrain as a commuter rail system has at-grade crossings with crossing gates. BART never has at-grade crossings with crossing gates. It is fully grade separated. Catrain has express service with trains that skip certain stations. BART has no station-skipping express service.
      BART was designed from the ground up to be a rapid transit system. It's even part of its name, Bay Area Rapid Transit. Caltrain is commuter rail.

      @@RaymondHng BART is actually a hybrid between metros and suburban rail, akin to an S-Bahn. A suburban metro is a metro with wider stop spacings compared to urban-centered metro systems. It’s WAY too early to make America’s rail network a carbon copy of Europe’s. Caltrain is the ONLY RAILWAY IN NORTH AMERICA that’s switching to Euro mode. It’s just so ill-fitting. And I’m 100% sure people like me will cringe seeing one of these things next to a Caltrans Charger on heavy rail platform. Overhead wire from the 19th century can't even power a fast tram these days. The main reason why the Acela is limited to 125mph anywhere on the NEC is that old catenary tech. Those two 160mph sections (150mph with the non-Avelia old Acelas) were upgraded to modern speeds primarily by swapping the catenary for a modern system. The catenary was one of the main innovations of the TGVs which made them more economical than the brute-force 1960s Shinkansen approach. Tilting electric trains are the only thing that make almost-HSR networks possible anywhere in Europe outside of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Benelux.

      Well part of the power is regenerated by the trains when they brake, unlike diesel trains which just burn off all that energy as heat. Electric trains are more energy efficient even if you burn coal, but most importantly they accelerate a lot more quickly.

    Hmmmm…… took decades. I remember for decades people have wanted Bart that has always been electrical since the beginning to go down the peninsula instead of have loud trains come by every so often, disrupt traffic and occasionally be the cause of suicide by some high school kid in need of help.

    • @bww1
      @bww1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The electric trains will be quieter than the diesel ones and how would BART be any quieter? And to your second point, that's a great case for why cities along the peninsula should be working to add grade separation at all train crossings.

      BART are very quite. Kudos to Cal Train for joining the 50 year old technology. Great move since quiet trains remove another objection by NIMBY's

      A while ago, I saw a screenshot from an old study on extending BART to I think past SFO. BART would apparently run as an express service while CalTrain would act as a local service which makes no sense based on the stop spacing. CalTrain should be treated as regional rail and BART as a proper metro.

      @@MrJimheeren they’ve capped the speed of Acela for safety concerns like road crossings and residential areas, but Acela is capable of faster speeds than the GG1, also California doesn’t even have the infrastructure in place to run these electric sets and it’s not being used for high speed service, the NEC built in 1910 being used in commuter service works very well and puts anything that California will try and implement to shame, they don’t have the resources, the infrastructure or the grid stability to operate electric rail service
