Hey Kurtis , here is an idea , make a bullet point list of all your steps taken with reasons and maybe we can make it go trend on Reddit , and make a change in someones life and our planet
@@ScopeofScience start your own, I'd subscribe straight away. There could be weekly stickies about a new topic. With mods you could create a new scientific subreddit!
Iiiinteresting idea. I tried having a subreddit a year ago when my channel was still super tiny, and it wasn't really working. Might restart it now that I've got some traction... Thanks!
Dear humans, let us follow Kurtis’ example and take initiative to reduce our wastes. Evidence is making it increasingly clear that if we want our children and grandchildren to enjoy a planet with all its natural beauty as we have, then we MUST take green initiatives, push for renewable energy R&D, and live green! Plus, as Kurtis mentioned, it often boosts your own quality of life in the process. Thanks Kurtis!
Interesting on how much we throw our trash and thats for one person. Just imagine all 7 billion of us except the super poor doing this. Its time to Change
In my native Norway they even wrap individual vegetables in plastic. God only knows why when the whole country is basically a giant refrigerator most of the year, but yeah that's just what we do. Then we gloat about how we've already saved to world because we recycle about half of that plastic. Yay. I think it might be too late to change enough in time to save us. l suppose there is still a chance but yeah l'm pretty sceptical. I moved to Morocco a few years back and the culture here is a lot more like how Kurtis described, and yeah, just as surprisingly easy to adapt to.
@@OtiumAbscondita yeaahhh you got a point but still thats alot of people especially the people most developed countries who throw probably more trash then lets say the people in developing countries
This is so hard to do in a small town where bulk stores aren’t available, but there are always changes that can be made. So excited for the farmers markets to come back this summer!
Tom Tom idk if your asking this ironically but buying kind of defeats the purpose in most cases. Your first instinct shouldn’t be to buy but thrift, upcycle etc. for example, don’t buy a reusable bag or a cutlery set just upcycle an old backpack/purse and bring your own metal cutlery from home. Napkin can be old cotton t-shirts cut up. And try to get some materials from people around you who don’t need the stuff anymore like containers or water bottles from family, friends, swap meets, consignment stores, and thrift shops. Then, after your exhausted all you your other options should buying be an option. usually the other options that I listed will have what you’re looking for.
Tom Tom some people genuinely don’t know this and just wanna buy buy buy everything🤷🏾♀️ i already said unless you were speaking ironically disregard my message. It was also for others who saw this part of this comment section about where they could get stuff.
In Denmark they have a mobile app system calles Storebox. You associate your debit card number with an account and when you buy stuff in participating supermarket chains, the receipt will not be printed, but send to your phone - where you could also pull it and use it for analyzing your shopping behavior. This has the potential to remove a lot of the receipt waste.
I have a few questions: Do you live alone and if not, how is managing your waste around other people? Is it more expensive to buy fresh food without packaging? What can I do if there isn’t recycling facilities near me? Congratulations on 100K!
All this is good to keep in mind. But we can also get into more nuanced situations. Frozen fruits and vegetables are part of a far less energy intensive product cycle.... unfortunately frozen foods often come packed in plastic bags. But is the use of plastic in this case less harmful than the more intensive fresh produce cycle? Better yet, there are countries where it is the norm to sell frozen foods in bulk bins where you bring your own containers. Always good to keep on thinking.
One thing Im glad about is that I live in a village and we all own houses and gardens. My family has a composter - just a place to throw all the bio garbage to let it rot and be used for trees or something. We collect plastic bags, we literally have hundreds of them. I collect straws. We use those eco or sewn bags for shopping(much better in terms of build quality). Im also vegetarian for a year now, and my favorite way of transport is cycling, or if I must - public transport. Congratulations on your huge progress in waste reduction! I'm going that way as well, finding the things that are easy to switch to a lower-waste option. Bulk foods in reusable containers, longer-lasting LED bulbs, durable shoes that don't need to be replaced as often.
Very cool to hear! Yeah, I think the key thing is to start with the easiest parts. It can make a big difference quickly. Sounds like you're going great. Keep it up!
this was super helpful. i've been zero waste on and off for the last two years, but now i'm really committing. it's nice to see how well you've come to it!
That's a huge improvement! I like your little kit too. I always take a bottle with me and haven't had to buy a bottled drink in a very long time. Time to up my game and take the portable kurtis canteen wherever I go.

This is a good challenge, thank you for this video. I am doing the 3 months as well, and it has been actually, life changing. Making life more beautiful.
Kurtis, Great job! You inspire me a lot to go zero waste.. Stop buying stuff Avoid packaged food Get own bags for shopping, buy in bulk Compost organic waste.. We can reduce our waste generation by 95%.. I'm gonna do..!!
When I lived in the Minneapolis area for 9 of 10 years we didn't pay for garbage service and we recycled over 95% of our waste had a grocery bag or two to throw away once a week when we went to the gas station. Great recycling program there.
Awesome video Kurtis. I'm in awe of how you managed that. The junk mail I get alone outweighs all of your months recycling. It makes me sooooo angry. I also HATE how much plastic supermarkets use, especially on fresh fruit and veg. It makes this going zero waste very difficult and we need these big companies to take some big steps to reduce this.
100%. We absolutely need to get some big corporate change happening. I recently sent my bank an email saying that if they didn't stop sending me trash I would switch banks. I will actually do that if I must, and it won't take them too many consumers to switch before they make some changes. That said, we need better+more political regulations on all sorts of waste creation things. But that is, perhaps, a future video...
Thanks Kurtis. Today was my 18th Birthday, I went to donate blood and I'm also planning to go to an orphanage. Thanks to people like you, Always spreading Positivity and Awareness. You guys have impacted my personality very much. Thanks Have a Good Time!
It’s going down. I feel the change. I remember I used to watch documentaries about climate change and waste in 2004, and felt like nothing was changing. Now though, it’s becoming pop. It’s becoming “the thing”. I think we can make it, goddamnit. I think we’re the generation that will save the world! Let’s do this.
This comment makes my day. Yes. I totally agree. I look at the school strikes taking place, and the way everyone is now talking about it... and I think its definitely starting to shift. We've got a long road ahead, but I think we're finally getting on it.
This is amazing Kurtis! Thank you so much for the contribution and awareness you make towards the environment and the planet we live on. Congrats on 100k Subs! You really deserve it and I am confident these numbers will just skyrocket from here!
Do a video on which are the ways we can have the most impact on improving environment? Going vegan, zero waste, driving an electric car & having solar panels etc. I'd be curious to see they stack up against each other
The thing about that is, unfortunately: it's complicated. It depends so much on your geography and situation. For example, it'd be probably be bad for me to buy a new electric car because as it is I rarely use a car and can rent one when I need it. For a lot of people an electric car would be a huge positive/good change in their footprint. I could write pages, but... hopefully that makes sense?
Forget environmentalism or climate chaos, it's just nice to not make so much waste and not to waste things. Our wastefulness is just another symptom of our lackadaisical modern lifestyles that's making us fat, lazy, and much less than what we could be. So, start caring about what you put in the trash and maybe you'll start caring more about what you put in your body and then maybe you'll care more about what you're doing with the time you have in that body. We live in a totally upside-down world to what even our very recent ancestors knew and what we have adapted to as a species over millions of years. We've gone from a world of ruthless scarcity to one of hyper-abundance, and our main trails of survival have all mostly transformed from problems of acquisition to problems of filtration. We've gone from being hunters and gatherers to farmers to, well, consumers, and while that status is an incredible privilege in some ways it comes with an immense added complexity that in an abstract sense almost takes us right back to that earlier hunter/gatherer lifestyle; except now we are virtual hunter/gatherers, more likely to end a bad day with a stomach full of junk rather than completely empty. Forgive me for getting pretentiously philosophical, but could we say that 21st century life has internalised the struggle for survival? We no longer struggle with nature but with ourselves and our primitive instincts that are easily exploited and can lead us in dangerous directions in this modern world that is essentially alien to them. Overcoming the limitations (or lack of limitation or moderation) of our instincts is our new trial, and our new horizon. So, we shouldn't be so hard on ourselves or each other if we are fat, lazy, wasteful, superficial and whatever other negative traits we may have developed despite living in what people of any other age would view as a relative paradise. We're simply not built for it. No amount of abundance is ever going to create a world where we no longer have work to do; because even if all our needs were catered for by some magical process we would still be required to find ways to adapt ourselves and live in this new world. Whatever world we are born into we will always face challenges.
Thats awesome! You should. I used to think that plastic pollution and climate change were both extremely difficult issues to tackle, and now I think that plastic pollution is actually way easier to prevent. We can do it, Levi!
Hey! That is an amazing amount in such a short time! Reduction of any amount is fantastic but what you have achieved is incredible. I hope you manage to inspire the millions. I have been proud of my changes so far, I struggle with getting my family on board too. I know this probably sounds like an excuse but I can't force my beliefs on others.
Kurtis, you're amazing you totally deserve 100k subs! I'm so proud for you! I believe you'll be at a million by the end of the year simply because you demonstrate so much passion for what you do! On youtube, I think we love that. You keep doing what you love and we'll keep loving what you do! :D

While I'm probably not gonna do this as of yet, I'm glad you at least planted this seed in my brain. Now I'll at least think about packages when I buy stuff, which might make a difference for me. Tip for people reading this: avoid aluminium cans if you can. Recycling it costs more energy than glass jars or cardboard boxes.
Thats awesome! Seriously, my goal is not to convert a small number of people to go Zero Waste perfectly, its to convince a big number of people to do it really imperfectly. Also about the aluminum, you're on point - and I'll add that plastic is the worst of all.
The local supermarket got rid of plastic bags, and gave out free cloth reusable bags for about 18 months. There's still locals who complain about having to buy plastic bags for 15¢ each... They were literally just throwing the reusable bags away because they were free.
big issue with "recycling" is a lot of it is still just packed into shipping containers and shipped to poorer asian countries where they just bury it or burn it. I still recycle everything I can in the hopes that it does actually get recycled, but I'm not convinced it isn't still just being shipped to a landfill somewhere far away or worse.
I live in a place where you can't buy in bulk, and everything is wrapped. All broccoli and salad heads are wrapped in plastic as an example. I think if I really tried I could cut at max 40% but in doing so also increase my cost. Because I would have to go to specialty vendors like my local butcher. It is an interesting journey, and I will try to see how much I will be able to save.
Gave up meat 16 years ago, and have been brainstorming video ideas for it for the last year. Want to find the best metaphor/experiment for it so that it can have as big of an impact as possible. Open to ideas!
Hello, I am from Germany, here in the recycling and the splitting of all the garbage is really important! Ever since I started to split off the organic waste from everything else, It has become very obvious, that the biggest problem is the plastic packaging from food from the store! I will take your video as the start to reduce my waste! Buying and packaged food at the supermarket will be the hardest problem. Sure, you can buy meat and cheese un packaged over-the-counter, But vegetarian stuff and frozen vegetables are almost impossible to buy it without plastic. Those things make up the majority of my plastic waste. Please make an update in a few months! It would also remind me to check my happens again! Thank you and great success!
p.s. please post your bunz name in the box below the video, too. Than even after being referred by your link, we can again put your name in a a referral inside the app. Thanks :D
The biggest hurdle for me, and probably a lot of others, to doing this to your extent is having a disability and practically no money, which makes food such a difficult process. The food is where I'd guess 80+% of my waste (incl recycling) comes from, and without the money to hire a personal cook, there's not really anything I can do about it. Which isn't to detract from everything you've said. I know I've reduced so much of my other waste just by buying some stronger reusable bags. But it's also important to recognize what factors are at play which prevent the personal progress we might like.
I would be interested in a more detailed version of how you live a reduced waste life (: I am impressed by even the FIRST amount of waste! I mean the rubbish bin in my room gets full every week! I need help to change!
Hey Kurtis , here is an idea , make a bullet point list of all your steps taken with reasons and maybe we can make it go trend on Reddit , and make a change in someones life and our planet

Idk if you garden, but if you do, your paper can be composted. I use cardboard in the pathways or till it in for mulch.
Congrats on attaining 100 000 subs, Kurtis! All the while saving the planet one small act at a time! DFTBA!
Thank YOU, Kurtis...
Congratulations on reducing waste and 100k!
That's wonderful! You've made amazing progress. I've been on my own journey. It's exciting!
Spectacular! Best of luck to you!
Kurtis is such a great role model !
Congratulations on the 100k, I’ve watched your videos for a while now and they are amazing!!
I’ve been saying for a while that everyone should be required to live with their trash for a year!!
I love your take out container idea! I am going to make one too! CONGRATULATIONS on 100k!!!
Hey Meropi! Yeah, the take out container has been a life saver, er, food saver :) Thanks so much :D A bit hard to believe.
You’re really genuine.
Love your videos as always !
Thanks :D Hope you're having an excellent day!
I am moving into my van sometime this year. This is a very valuable video for me. Thank you!
This is the embodiment of "Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world"
You deserve it!! And I will try to reduce at least 50% of my waste!
Congrats on 100K! Keep being great!
Yay Vancouver! I recognized the recycling bins. Way to go! You did such a great job in 90 days.
Good, I will make all I can to reach this goal too! Thanks for show us how easy it could be to make a big difference. :)
The local supermarket got rid of plastic bags, and gave out free cloth reusable bags for about 18 months. There's still locals who complain about having to buy plastic bags for 15¢ each... They were literally just throwing the reusable bags away because they were free.
There’s also time sharing! (Or something like that) where if you do something for one person then they give you a “time” which is like currency
big issue with "recycling" is a lot of it is still just packed into shipping containers and shipped to poorer asian countries where they just bury it or burn it. I still recycle everything I can in the hopes that it does actually get recycled, but I'm not convinced it isn't still just being shipped to a landfill somewhere far away or worse.
Yooooooooooo 5k to 100k that's a lot of subs! You deserve much more tho
YOU REALLY MAKE ME HAPPY AND GIVE ME SO MUCH HOPE YOU'RE DOING AN AMAZING WORK, REALLY
My goal is to start a Precious Plastic recycling system. Still trying to fund it, but I think I can get to it soon.
Really good videos!! It's a shame you don't have more subscribers.
More people need to see these videos! Keep making them!!
I have been enjoying your videos. thanks so much for making videos on waste.
You really deserve more than that tbh because your content is so good and interesting I love it ❤️
I love your videos soso much! but this one is just BOMB :) thank you Kurtis!!
You should do a collaboration with davehakkens
(The precious plastic guy) that would be super cool!
Compost is q game changer. That made the most impact in waste production in my house?
Only 100k subs only, you deserve 10+ million subs man!
For 200K you should make a camera in this place that turns on when you get this :D
It makes me sound bad but i never thought about this i am 100 percent trying this now THANK YOU FOR THIS
i love your content! please continue. your just awesome
Great video! Can you please do a video on environmental impact of meat production?
I think if you make the video, people will understand better.
Gave up meat 16 years ago, and have been brainstorming video ideas for it for the last year. Want to find the best metaphor/experiment for it so that it can have as big of an impact as possible. Open to ideas!
Let's share this video as much as we can
Please do! I think it's a really important issue, but I also think we can do it!
Thanks :D
Oh, thats smart! I'm @kurtisbaute :)
I'm so glad I decided to subscribe...this channel is awesome. YOU are awesome
YOU are awesome, Logan.
more consistency and u could be at a million right now, amazing content
100k! Kurtis's work really paid off!
