Elevation documentary: how drones will change cities

  • Elevation is a short documentary by online magazine Dezeen about how drones will transform cities - revolutionising how people travel, how goods are delivered and how buildings look and are constructed.
    “Aerial highways” will relieve pressure on roads as deliveries and human transportation take to the skies in unmanned electric vehicles.
    Architecture will change dramatically as the ground floor entrance is replaced by rooftop landing, parking and recharging zones and deliveries arrive via specially constructed portals on the sides of buildings.
    This vision of the future is set out in the 18-minute film, which features interviews with architects and industry experts including Norman Foster, Paul Priestman, Liam Young and Anab Jain.
    Yet as well as painting a picture of a utopian drone-filled future, Elevation also hints at more sinister uses of the technology, exploring potential threats to our privacy and safety.

    "A cloud of wasps all over the place" - what a striking image of our drone-filled future (and how noisy!) Drones will be the insects of our urban robot ecosystems - both blessing and curse . This fascinating little film shows how rapidly this technology is advancing, and how transformative it could be.

    I think this ELEVATION is utterly incredible. Technology and AI as a whole are completely changing the way, scope, and capacity humans have to engage solution-options. Most profound in architecture these changes will (certainly) range from the incredibly innovative to (eventually) the downright bizarre - with (all sorts) of social ramifications. We can't avoid this evolution as much as we can't avoid growing old....so we need to define how to manage the social and societal risks of this new-democracy. Brilliant 17mins; excellent work Dezeen; and each interview was totally spot-on in content and delivery. Absolutely critical basis for wider discuss, a 'must-share'....!

    Grateful for this excellent film!
    This idea that the future will liberate us from the persistent pull of the ground level is not new at all tough. (talking 'bout the 'highways in the sky')
    At the beginning of the 20th century, modernist architects were utterly convinced that the traditional street is obsolete. They were able to imagine all kinds of alternatives, intricate multilevel cities with underground tunnels, flying around town and all kinds of streets in the sky.
    They didn’t imagine tough that the boring old street on the ground, a line of movement in between buildings will persevere as the dominant urban form in cities everywhere.
    To add complexity to the urban form along the vertical dimension had been a vision of many architects, particularly since air travel became a thing. But in reality, the pull of the ground level turned out to be stronger than we thought.
    Architects think and design from the aerial perspective all the time!
    Looking down at a typical architectural model you always have a drone’s eye view!
    To accurately think and design at the eye level is actually often a greater challenge... Maybe the spread of VR visualizations will be helpful with this.
    In the meantime, it is useful to remain grounded! (at least in history)

    This documentary is 95% hype! Its basically just about the old architects' wet dreams about flying cars... and some dystopian scare mongering with creepy electronic background music .. but when you think about it from a cost/benefit perspective in most operations (especially human or heavier object transport) it just makes much more sense to not have to fight gravity during every second of operation... so yeah drones will change cities... like VR will change the internet... and Pokemon Go will change the world... Until a new technology radically solves existing problems in a much more efficient/better/cheaper way I call BS.

    Excellent doc. I think another important point is how to control where drones fly and how to stop them crashing into each other. Comparing drones to pigeons or wasps is cute, but those organisms have senses that help them avoid crashes. Perhaps all drones should be fitted with similar senses - or rather sensors.

    • @Juxtaposed_IRL

      Safety sensors aren't a new thing with drones, but I do agree with you that all drones should have them. They should also have safety procedures to deal with certain situations, such as if it's damaged mid-air.

      Depends how far ahead you're thinking. 30 years from now cities will be full of augmented reality and autonomous cars, complex building design and vertical agriculture. Cities 100 years from now will be made of self cleaning materials down to every aspect (cars, buildings) there will be ambient lighting that's produced by the floor itself. The walls and floor will be made out of self replicating graphene and other materials which will allow police robots to appear to "grow" out of the ground on command of a crime. Cars will glide silently on electro magnetic currents with no wheels or engine. Air will be countryside quality in the middle of cities.

    For transporting people I’m not sure I agree. One reason, noise pollution. People are not going to want to hear a constant hum from the sky. Tunnels, although more difficult to build, are much more efficient for transporting large amounts of people.

    I think a lot of recreational drone owners will soon realise how few places you can actually legally fly your drone - try the local park - NO - local councils have prohibited it - try countryside - NO - you need landowners permission - try National Parks - NO - almost always forbidden - try coastlines - NO - local councils, national trusts etc will forbid it - try built up areas - NO - absolutely not due to safety reasons and ANO. Make sure you have some land where you can legally fly your drone before you waste your money

    I think they should take a gallon of milk up to 1.000 ft and drop it on their own heads first, just to prove it's safe. Then test their family's car, with their family's driving at 60 mph and drop something onto the windshield, again, just to show how safe it is... For some reason, no one has done this...? Don't get me wrong, I think it's a cool idea, but I've seen what happens when something goes through a windshield...

    • @Juxtaposed_IRL
      @Juxtaposed_IRL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree safety tests should be done. If the products are kept within a safety container that won't open even under pressure, I think it'll be generally speaking, easily preventable.

  • @dianedzierzynski2583
    @dianedzierzynski2583 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Very thoughtful and the fore-telling of a possible future, if we decide to go there. However, since the initial spread of drones through the general population ...and Amazon...what has been lacking is a serious evaluation of what this could mean for our bird population, already under such duress that it is estimated we have lost over one-third of our bird population over the past ten years. Imagine what a widespread use of drones would do.....birds would disappear from the skies where drones roamed, Fantastic for people who want to hear a constant 'drone' made by mechanical wasps instead of bird songs and chirps.
    Just because something can be done doesn't mean it has to be done...................... Perhaps our civilization is being built on machinery , not on what the human spirit would truly desire and profit from. Surely we can find ways to transport packages and ourselves without destroying those things necessary for the human soul.
