    I have been wanting to learn this dance for literally years since learning about the 20s as a teen. I was so excited when I found Aaron1912's video but quickly lost hope when it proved way too complicated. For years I always felt frustrated when I'd hear swing dancers tell me it was soooo easy and I once even scoffed when I read once that the dance was so easy that the flappers had it down in no time. Then I discovered this video.... about a month later of practicing and I finally have it down! I could cry I'm so happy! 😅 Thank you so much!

    Here’s what I learned( it may be wrong): When you pick up your feet, turn them in. When you put them down to do the taps turn them out. I respect whoever can manage to do this. If this doesn’t help I suggest watching her feet and looking at when she does the twists

    In the original Charleston, both dancers swung babies around their heads while dancing the to-fro steps. Back then it was at a slower tempo; as the speed increased over the years babies began colliding with more and more force and so they decided to eliminate them for safety's sake. Still, it was a bit of fun every time one would hear a moist thudding sound. Ahh, yesteryear...

      @@proteus371 It should yes, but that's not exactly how it seems for me. With MMA, you aren't really based on timing, it's what's coming at you. I guess it's a little more reflectual.. You are always timing your movements off of what other people do, not yourself. So it is a bit more difficult to move four different limbs all at once, lol. MMA, is one movement at a time, the Charleston is a bit different.

    What are the best type of shoes to find for The Charleston, for men or women? We're doing a play where the actors are doing the Charleston, but everyone's shoes so far won't twist on any surface it seems. I imagine a hard soled dress shoe would work better, but so far I'm not finding any.

    • @JazzMAD
      @JazzMAD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The slippery-er the better. Hard leather or suede soles are best. The twisting motion of Charleston can really damage your joints (knees particularly) if done with sticky shoes. And if anyone is wearing a heel, make it’s low (not more than 1.5 inches or so) and sturdy, a wide/Cuban heel, no skinny stiletto heels. It’s for safety and historical authenticity. Any dance brand’s “character shoes” are probably fine, though ugly. Check out this article for brands making authentic styles with the right soles for serious dancing: www.jazzmad.co.uk/the-best-shoes-for-swing-dancing/

    Thank you. A friendly tip to make this much more helpful for slow learners like myself. Do not keep changing points of view. Going from you facing us to facing away and then back, it's very confusing to a newbie. I highly recommend doing the entire lesson (all the moves from beginning to end) first entirely facing away from us. This is the perspective that matches our own and is easiest to follow since we don't have to reverse it all in our heads. Then once the student thinks they have it, lesson 2 can have you facing us..but only if we have access to a large mirror so we can look in the mirror to see if we look like you.
    Also, wearing just socks would greatly help to see your heel-raises clearly. In fact, shouldn't all universal beginners' instruction videos start flat-heeled (or just in socks) to take the unnecessary complexity of high heels (constant heel arch) out of it? Not to mention, half your audience (men) don't wear high heels and not all women like to dance in them. Cheers.

    Those shoes are EXACTLY the style I've been looking for for my wedding. I really wish I knew where to get them.

    I learned this back when I was a kid in HS but didn't know the name of it. I took dance in college but HS was where I learned all the ballroom and trendy dances. Somebodies parents were ballroom dancers and they came in and taught every term on the extra empty school days where they had to stay open to get money from the state, but all classwork was done so it was the last 2 days before Christmas and before summer and they broke days up with board games, movies, dancing, for people who didn't skip school of course. Then theater class they came in too, for Bernice Bobs her Hair and you had fewer partners to choose from. I remember square dancing too, that was a month each year of middle school and they played a couple of records calling out what to do. "Now the two head ladies cross over, across from the opposite side, two side ladies cross over, all join hands. All into the circle and from in the circle back out, swing your corner partner and promenade the hall."
    Thanks for the show.

    The Charleston Song.
    Charleston! Charleston! Made in Carolina!
    Some dance, some prance
    I’ll say there’s nothing finer than Charleston, Charleston, gee how can you shuffle;
    Every step you do, leads to something new.
    Man I’m telling you, it’s a lapazoo!
    There’s another song called, “Tapioca” but I can’t remember the lyrics.
    I’m never going to get to sleep now it’s going to drive me insane! 😳🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

    I decided on a whim to learn this lively dance at midnight. After studying this video for 2 hours, I believe I’ve mastered it!

    In old movies, when they want to make fun of people dancing the Charleston, they put their hands on their knees and move as if the knees aren't solid.

    Awesome. Did we not jump foreword to the 1960s, 3 decades , to the era that embraced the attitude of. ‘ Let the devil take the hindmost’ we have arrived , and the establishment can go **** themselves.
