Had 1 Hit in America & CLAIMED To Be the GREATEST BAND EVER…NEVER Had Another Hit!-Professor of Rock

- They’re brash, they’re cocky, and completely full of themselves… And today’s featured bandmate brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis were as likely to punch each other in the mouth as they were to kick out chart-topping hits. But for whatever reason the dynamic worked. And this sibling rivalry captured the imagination of a nation propelling Oasis to heights not seen in decades. For this episode we’re zeroing in on their most iconic track: Wonderwall. A song that was supposedly written about Noel’s girlfriend… only the thing is… He had to lie to the world and to her about it’s meaning. Later, after they split up, he told the real story. And in time, Wonderwall become so popular that Liam could NOT stand to sing it, saying it made him want to gag. And what’s ironic is that Noel always regretted giving it up to Liam to record… He wished he’d kept it for himself. It’s the story of an overnight sensation turned train wreck… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. Today’s song story is so amazing, so entreating you’ll be transfixed… Today we break down one of the most covered songs of the rock era. From their 1995 album What’s the Story Morning Glory, it’s Oasis with Wonderwall. Manchester, England rockers Oasis got their start in 1991 under the moniker ‘Rain.’ The band was initially comprised of lead vocalist Chris Hutton, bassist Paul McGuigan, guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs, and drummer Tony McCarrol. However, the band was unhappy with Hutton behind the mic and so they auditioned Liam Gallagher, who won the job. Liam suggested the band change their name to Oasis and the band played their first gig on August 14, 1991 at the Boardwalk Club in Manchester.
At this time, Oasis also caught the interest of Liam’s older brother Noel, who had been working as a roadie for the band Inspiral Carpets. Noel recognized Oasis’s potential and insisted they install him as their lead guitarist and songwriter. Having already written several songs while on the road with Inspirals Carpets, Noel took charge as band leader. Noel would later tell Rolling Stone about his role in Oasis, saying, “I can only do this one way: with me in complete control of it.” In May 1993, Oasis got their big break at King Tut’s Wah Wah Club in Glasgow, Scotland. Talking their way onto the billing, Oasis played five songs including a cover of The Beatles’s 'I Am the Walrus.’ The performance won over Creation Records executive Alan McGee, who offered them a contract on the spot. - บันเทิง
Poll: What is your pick for the GREATEST SONG to come out of the BRITISH INVASIONS? 60s, 80s or 90s?

Girls On Film -- Duran x2
Champagne Supernova -- Oasis
Edwyn Collins "A Girl Like You"
Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
The Verve - Lucky Man

Back about 2005, I was a soldier in the Georgia Army National Guard. Our unit spent two weeks training in Camp Blanding, Florida with a British Army unit from England.
One particular day, after a cookout, we rode buses together back to the barracks and the soldiers, American and English, alike started belting out Wonderwall in unison.
To this day for me, the lyrics of Wonderwall always seemed to describe the relationship of both our countries. We’re each other’s Wonderwall in the world and often the only one’s who can save the other.
I was at Blanding in 1989. It is hot and sticky in July, and those little yellow-winged flies and mosquitoes were fierce!
@@AmericanFlyOnTheWall And that’s just central Florida. Wait til you go further south.
Ya Oasis was never that deep or smart to imply THAT.

I never quite understood the popularity of Wonderwall. It's a good song, and I like it, but Champagne Supernova and Dont Look Back in Anger are so much better.
THanks!
I agree!

Yup, hated Wonderwall, Champaign was decent.
Ugh, Champagne Supernova makes me want to rupture my eardrums.
Never understood the comparison with the Beatles. Absolutely unjustified.
@@peterv7258....I never understood the popularity of the Beatles especially here in states....
The comparisons to the Beatles were short lived. When people look at the history of music the Beatles will be mentioned often and the other one will be deserted
I'll never get enough of The Beatles no matter how many times I've heard the same songs over and over. Oasis always sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
OASIS WAS A JOKE
@@user-hr1gw3qr8w BINGO!!! The Beatles were Shyte after they fired Pete Best.
I was working in a bicycle/small engine repair shop when Wonderwall came out. When it played on the radio we would turn off the machines and down tools to listen to it. It drove the boss mad. That whole era was magic for me , I'm so happy that I was in my 20's in the 90's. Everything seemed good then and the thing is that we knew it and appreciated it.
Damn Adam, sometimes you really make a person feel old. Can't believe that song is almost 30 years old.
No joke. Seems like yesterday!
It sure does make ya feel old ! Lol
I was jamming to the Toadies first cd , pulling in to the parking lot at work . A couple of guys standing outside were like , "oh yeah ! That's old school right there" . I just smiled and made some offhand comment to them and laughed .... Then i thought about how long i'd had that cd ? Made me think ... "damn ? I guess i'm old school too" ? 😂
I was in my 20's when Oasis and Toadies hit the scene . I'm 55 now but , still rocking ! 🤘

The '90s? Seems kinda recent to we 70+ guys.

Because there was nothing new being done.
Yes there were a few really good songs, done by a few bands, but nothing that could or does stand to the music of the golden age of Rock n Roll, 1955-1980!!
I celebrated the 68th anniversary of my 1956 birth on July 1st, and still nothing new has come along, it’s all just sad representations of the golden age, 1955-1980. In most cases you can’t know whether it was inspired and written by a human, or an algorithm!!

Just saw Liam's gig in Dublin with my 19yo daughter a week ago. The number of young fans outnumbered us oldies massively. The new young loyal following he has blew my mind and wasnt something I expected to see. Hes more popular than ever by all accounts.
He doesn’t appear so narcissistic to them and speaks to their superficial egos
Yeah, Liam is more popular than Noel in the states as well! I’ve seen Noel twice, and he was my first concert yearssss ago. I wish I could see Liam! The dude got like 70,000 people at knebworth not that long ago
I saw him in Manchester on the 15th of June at COOP... absolutely MAD. When Cigs/Alcohol came on... the crowd went MAD. It was truly "Biblical" as Liam would say.
@ianmccown Probably because he's much better looking than Noel so he appeals to more female fans
@@ianmccown The new data says he sang both nights to 100.000 people so 200.000 together. Great numbers. He is huge nowdays and he almost lost his voice and his place in the music industry his comeback one of the biggest in U.K. history.
''live forever'' is Oasis's best and most timeless song.
I prefer "Roll with It".
Agreed
If I heard a bandmate say he wanted to be in complete control, I think I'd run.
Seriously!
Gilmour and Mason just kicked the bastard out.
Well, unless you have business ideas or experience of that industry or decent songwriting contributions , sit the fuck down and shit up . Bands who believe in that democracy nonsense never make it .
A recipe for resentment
Me too. Scary stuff.
They were not, however, the new Beatles.
It was natural for people to call them that though... Don't you think?
@@ProfessorofRocksorry but no. They were from Manchester and I bet no Liverpudlian would agree. It would be like finding a Man United fan born in Liverpool.😂
Yhey are prats
@@ProfessorofRock of course no one could ever be the new Beatles. Though many have tried.
@@ProfessorofRock I agree. The way they went from obscurity to playing stadiums very quickly, it's easy to see why people made the comparison. Plus, if you go through their catalog, they put out one great song after another. The Beatles are in a league of their own, but Oasis was a great band.
Absolutely love Oasis and Noel, but they did a lot to alienate the American audience on their first tour. I’m not surprised they aren’t as popular here.
Similar to what happened to the Kinks. If I recall, their US debut was a smash with songs like You Really Got Me, All of the Night, etc. until Ray Davies had an incident with hitting a musicians' union official and other incidents during their 1965 US tour; it took them a long time for them to bounce back in the US because they were banned from touring. And like Oasis, the Davies brothers have had their share of knock-down, drag-out fights. The Kinks have been regarded as one of the most influential bands. They were influential in the development of punk rock/new wave and heavy metal music, and Oasis was one of those bands influenced heavily by the Kinks.
Same. Not a big fan.
Sadly you are very right... I have fond memories of seeing them in Chicago in August 1996 at Allstate Arena (nee Rosemont Horizon). Noel sang lead because Liam had gone back to England, supposedly because he was homeless lol. Just absurd nonsense, America broke him :( To your point, Liam not being there definitely didn't help matters
Sidenote -- that wasn't actually their first American tour, but it was their first "big" (arena) tour, so I assume that's what you meant
Btw Manic Street Preachers opened that show, and I'd never heard of them before that night. But that began a lifelong fandom of the Manics, for me, so I'll always be grateful to Oasis for that introduction (beyond loving Oasis for who they are anyway)
okay enough rambling, just got nostalgic for a minute lol
And it's the Americans loss... and it's a shame they aren't in the Rock Hall of Fame... Mariah Carey is in it, for chrissakes.
@@slidenawaythanks for the recommendation. They’re awesome
Every time I hear Oasis, I think of the SNL sketch where they're in British Parliament, and Will Ferrell's character's mission in life was getting the Parliament to declare Oasis to be the greatest rock band in history... lol

Prof - I'm an old guy and while I enjoy hearing about 90s bands and singers I'd love it if you went further back in time to talk about some of the greats like Carl Perkins and other Rock and Rockabilly greats. I lived in Ireland in 2001 & a kid would busk by the train station & either I had magical timing or he played Wonderwall 100 times a day bc I always heard him sing it. My favorite oasis song is Acquiesce, in particular the live version on Familiar to Millions. So good. Noel’s “AKA what a life” is an underrated gem too imho
OMG that dude was still there in 2001? JK. But I studied in Ireland the summer of ‘96 and literally (and I mean literally) 2 out of 3 buskers in Dublin were playing that song at any given time. You could actually hear them at the same time, blocks away from each other. They’d also ask us at the doors of clubs if we were for Oasis or Blur in order to determine whether they were going to let us in.
Three songs you really don't want to hear if you run an open mic..."Wagon Wheel", "Hallelujah", and "Wonderwall"....All great songs ,but done to (and beyond) death.

I'm 65 years old and I just recently heard and I just recently heard Wonderwall. Love it!
What did The Beatles think of Oasis?
George was very dismissive of them, calling them derivative and unoriginal. Noel Gallagher was furious, and called George a “nipple” (?). Paul was much more polite, but said similar things. He didn't HATE Oasis.Nov 25, 2020

The famous Glasgow gig where Oasis got its Big break (coming to the attention of Creation records) they were a last-minute addition as an opening act for the Jesus and Mary Chain.... Which is another band that has battling brothers at the center of their creative core.
Pretty quiet gig apparently, my dad was there, he was a big fan of JMC, and I’ve met a few of the people that were big in that scene. My friends dad was a member of primal scream, from that I managed to meet Gerard love from teenage fan club. Best city for music in the world
The nostalgia of “Wonderwall” runs deep here ❤! I grew up in the Daytona Beach area-I was a senior in 96’.
This song, brings back the BEST beachside cruising/club scoping memories.
Cruising in my 1987 candy apple red Nissan Pulsar -t-tops, the sound system I’d spent years working on & saving up for.
3 or 4 girlfriends & I (mom’s) Nokia cell in tow ( 7-7 free nights/wknds plan 😉iykyk) packed in my beloved “almost convertible”😂 sound machine-headed for beachside to “cruise the strip” either meeting up with other friends out cruising OR ladies night(s) driving down the “HOTTEST” nightclub blocks; scanning to see which doormen were working, without fail at least 1 maybe 2 friends hadn’t quite hit 18 yet so we needed one who was “lax” or only scanned the ID for the year 😎
Those hot blocks would be so packed and SLOW sometimes you’d interact with people in other cars or the group walkers headed into the clubs from the hotels or parking areas. On top of being a “local”party town, Daytona in the 80’s, 90’s & early 2000’s drew in scores of tourists. We met party people from all over. You never knew who’d you’d end up hanging out & club hopping with (Razzles, 600 North, Baja Beach Club etc)
There’d be 4 or 5 (yes, really 5) of us packed in my beloved,
but tiny,Pulsar. “Wonderwall” was belted out many times either headed across one of the bridges- to beachside or winding down, wind- blow drying our sweaty dance heads on the way home or to the Waffle House for 3am waffle and hash brown magic.
Those days had many “soundtracks” but “Wonderwall” was special. Everyone knew the lyrics. We were carefree, all together, happy & didn’t realize how fast things were going to change as the year closed and we all went off to our next chapters. Ignorance is sweet bliss when you’re having a blast. 💯biased but I will always have a soft spot for “Wonderwall”. 🥰
They were super popular in America long before Wonderwall. The charts don't always show the appeal of a band. Everyone I knew at the time had the Definitely Maybe album and they were all over the radio.
Yes, I was surprised that he described them as an “overnight sensation” who had “1 hit” but I guess he is just going by the pop charts 🤷♂️
They lost their credibility when, I think it was Liam, ducked out of a televised concert claiming illness. Then the cameras focused on him in the skybox watching his band play. Most people started disliking the massive egos in the band.
I think you're right!
That’s what drugs do unfortunately..
Wow that is messed up.
Get your info correct before mouthing off... Just like old Adam who has mistated things more than once in his videos.

I gotta say, the '90s had lots of innovation in music like grunge, brit pop, NU metal, boybands, and girlbands.
I also noticed how some rap songs used so many samples of classic rock hits like Ice Ice Baby sampled Under Pressure of Queen and David Bowie, U Can't Touch This sampled Super Freak of Rick James, Hits From The Bong sampled Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man", Naughty By Nature's O.P.P. sampled The Jackson 5's A.B.C., and so much more.

@Chapps1941 Rock & Roll Dying in the 90s? You're out of your mind. The 90s quite possibly are the only Decade that Possibly either competed with the 60s if not dare I say out did the 60s, which I understand might be a tiny tiny stretch but under no circumstances, whatsoever were the 90s some kind of low point In Rock & Roll. The 90s we're a definite high point in Rock & Roll not to mention that many of those bands that came out in the late 80s early 90s to late 90s went on in many case to keep dropping amazing records all throughout the following decades and some are literally still dropping hit albums to today.
& even since then, there have been many great bands & there's new great bands coming out. You just need to know where to look. Yes I agree that Corporate greed & Predatory Business Practices in many ways are decimating the Artists & making it difficult for a group of People to get together write amazing music, record it & release it, tour etc. But then also in reality nothing is stopping them from doing it themselves because everyone has a home studio these days & if you don't have your own it's not to hard to find someone who does.
Here's 1 for you that's almost brand new. They've put out 2 records, and they've been around maybe 3-5 years. They're from London England & they're called "Island"

No record out yet but she recently signed with someone. She's got all her songs on TH-cam & Facebook. Mark My Works, She's gonna be huge. Her name is Lanie Gardner. More talent than any 1 person deserves.
Maybe you've heard of Greta Van Fleet? I'd say they're newish. Americans.
Maneskin is definitely pretty cool from Rome Italy.

People thought it was all so dark, and, yes, some of it was, but the music written (not just the lyrics) had a different, welcomed, sound. I attended Woodstock '94 and it was a blast! The whole experience: painting, traveling and living out of the van from Indiana to New York. An amazing co-incidence with the girls who bought the 2 remaining tickets of the block purchased. Excellent experience and saw some excellent bands produced out of that era, and then some. Although they didnt attend, I'd love to see background on another 80s/90s band, Mazzy Star of the paisley underground, shoe gazing genre. They were/are totally underrated, as far as song writing, playing and singing style. Fingers crossed, Professor! 😉
I have to admit that I've never been a fan of Oasis. I just don't get them. People say that they are an updated version of the Beatles but to me they sound like the Beatles if they were really high on dope.
Ha!
That was already accomplished by The Beatles themselves with Sgt. Pepper’s.
So, that would be The Beatles after they met Dr. Robert, then! ;)
Hey ProRo 🤓 hows the family
?
There was actually a period between 95 and 97 when oasis were the biggest band in the world,Im a massive oasis fan,I learned how to play guitar listening to oasis,I’m not really a fan of wonderwall either,But the way I look at it is it’s just pure jealousy with that song,Every great guitarist and songwriter never thought to put that simple chord sequence together,It’s so easy but sound’s brilliant,Even Paul McCartney and Keith richards said,Fuck,I can’t believe I never thought of using they chords,Listen to the B-Sides oasis put out during that time,Songs like the masterplan,Aquiesce,Talk tonight,Unbelievable,
Slide away is the best song from Definitely Maybe. I have listened to that album more than what’s the story
Believe it or not, What’s The Story Morning Glory was the first ever album I bought, and will always have a special place in my heart!
Very cool! GREAT ALBUM!
P O R !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had no idea that Wonderwall was about one of the band member's girlfriends. The chorus is one of those earworms that you always sing along to but I guess I never really listened to it that closely.
Great video POR. The thing that’s never mentioned is how, in the UK, the Mike Flowers Pops’ 1995 cover of Wonderwall really put the wind beneath the bands wings. Noel has said when squares start liking your music you become f massive. I think that cover was pivotal.
Good point!
Bloody hell. Mike Flowers Pops. I'd erased him from my memory.
Now that Mike Flowers Pops cover I liked! It sounded the way "Wonderwall" always should have! Just the right amount of clever wiseacre charm!
Liam's singing sounds as good as that of a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine.
You think?
This made my day!
Rofl
Speaking of which. I need to go outside and mow my lawn.
@@crappyfellow I prefer the B & S
I feel Oasis doesn’t get the credit they deserve. IMO, Noel was the driving force, they’d have zero hits without his incredible lyrics and guitar. His brother could not handle the fact he was just a mouthpiece; he hated he and the band were beholden to Noel. They were a wonderful disaster. I listen to them to this day.
No question.
Nice to see Question of Balance and Battle of the Bands on your rack!
You know they have many great songs when they have to put "the masterplan" on the B-side.

They're not good enough to shine Paul Mccartneys shoes
giggling at the t shirt and its true meaning hee hee
Right ? 😂😂
@@BartG87- shirt has more talent than Steven Jenkins. Semi bad kind of song.
Thank you for going down the list of people covering Oasis... I loved a lot of those artists that were contemporaries of Oasis at around the sametime
Definitely not my favourite band. The Oasis Blur feud was so boring. They really were a third rate Beatles
I know marillion is the best 💩
Rubbish. 'Definitely Maybe' is a classic album. You don't get much better than 'Columbia' and 'Supersonic', they are totally original songs.
@@mattg56 being in the UK during the Britpop era was the pits
Oasis, Blur, Beatles are all awesome and so much better than modern computer drums auto tune vocal AI songwriting music of 2024
If you ever made out in the back seat of a Ford Pinto while listening to rock on your car's 8-track player ... you're going to really dig this channel.
Playing my guessing game to figure out the artist and song using the thumbnail, video title, and opening introduction: I'm going with Oasis - Wonderwall.
*Edit* Nailed it!
Oasis.🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I’d love more Oasis/Britpop content. Thanks for all your great videos spanning the decades.
That inspiral carpets bit is one of my favourite bits of music trivia!
I would love to see more Oasis and some of Liam’s recent solo work. “C’mon You Know” is really good.
I knew it, I knew it was Liam and Noel! After catching veiled references on The Graham Norton Show, so glad to finally hear the whole story.
Okay, would like to see you dip more into the brother rivalry.
The most fun I have is trying to guess the band from the title. Nailed this one
I knew what song it was before I ever clicked on the video. That's how infamous it is. 😎
I was a MASSIVE fan of the first album. As for Wonderwall... all I can say is, it grew on me
You'll love this one, then... th-cam.com/video/DZoFodkXuVM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=D8WJSZfmmu_C6312 Morning Glory is a double album, brilliantly constructed. Mind blew.
Love what you do, if
I ever get close
I'll call ahead.
"Primer" with a short 'i'. Primer with a long 'i' is paint.
I don't know why one would have to apologize for or "admit" that "Wonder-wall" is a great song. It's timeless for me. And I like "Champaign Super Nova" and "Don'r look Back in Anger" even better. I would like more of these Oasis videos. Yes, the Gallagher boys could be pricks but, at least they were real artist. I miss'em..
Circa 1971 gen X’er here 😁 love the daily dose of Prof. Rock❤
Saw them in Sydney at the Enmore Theatre, 2001 (or 2002?). Epic gig, one of the best I've ever seen.
And I've seen quite a lot. :)
saw them at ACL fest in 2005, and he introduced the song w/ something like "this one's for all the fat girls in the audience." i somehow knew exactly what they were about to play
Still one of my favorite bands. Saw them once in concert and they put on one hell of a show. And that concert, in Orlando, FL, was originally cancelled because the band broke up. They reunited and played a year later.. 😂
Love the band, love the song.. you should do a deep dive on their b sides .. especially from this era .. they will 100% knock your socks off !( that’s one of the reasons I became such a fan)
Great song. Always takes me back to my college days.
I was waiting for an Oasis segment
Great choice. The "What's the Story Morning Glory" CD was in heavy rotation in both my car and home stereos for more than a year after it was released. There are no bad songs. 90's Brit Pop was a great era.
I remember "All Around The World" by Oasis being used in the commercials for the mergers of SBC and AT&T and later the merger of BellSouth and AT&T in 2006 and 2007 respectively. "Your world delivered."
The song is about Melissa Lim, a girl that he had a fling with in san fransico in 1994. it was orinally called wishing stone
You mean San Francisco. I've had more talk with females with that first name than with any other name in my life, but not in a fling sense. Nice Hobbes icon. Thanks for the info. Have a great weekend.
I had to click on the video just to see if "Wonderwall" was the answer. 🤣
I can't believe you didn't say anything about how incredible F*ckin in the Bushes was in Snatch! Guy Ritchie couldn't have chosen a better track for that boxing scene
❤❤❤Wonder Walls, thank you for the information. Good song
THanks Cherrie!
He didn't HAVE to lie.
Thank you for doing an Oasis episode! They have been my favorite band since the beginning.
Thank you for mentioning the other Brit pop artist of the day! I’m 50 and while I listen to modern rock, Brit pop is always at the top of the list for me!
Amazing episode, again thank you!
First time I’ve heard this. I can see its popularity.
For those wondering why The Beatles comparison, it was because Noel and the band used a lot of the former band's song structures and sounds to create their own sound. It wasn't because Oasis started a craze around the world or had any origins like The Beatles or anything like that. The comparison was more like an insult than praise.
Really diggin' that 3eb shirt!
