Stephan Brun About that, since I have no idea at all... Do you know if those loose riveted rings can make up for a shirt or they are for something else? Excuse my ignorance by the way hahaha
I used to use galvanized steel wire to make butted mail. However, the only mail I kept was tiny rings, used to make an armored shirt for a teddy bear. He is well protected.
I've been wanting this video ever since I watched the video where you said you wear mail armor every day. Thank you! Also, amazing skills on that piano!
Plays a piano, in depth and accurate knowledge of many differing locales of history including but not limited to weapons, armor and battles, speaks multiple languages, possesses a drive for learning I've still never personally seen in someone. Metatron, you're a fascinating individual. You're an excellent example of what one should strive for if the goal is to become well rounded. Also, after your video discussing the best defense against a knife if worse comes for wear will very likely influence a future purchase of mail armor. Keep up the great content.
Rest assured, I appreciate any content that you choose to share, regardless of length or production complexity. I find your videos interesting and informative.
You're so cute-- you don't need to defend the quality of your channel, because you're one of the best and most popular TH-camrs around! You're awesome-- PERIOD.
Okay. I don't buy it. Metatron is not human. No one man can master so many things in just one lifetime. HE IS AN IMMORTAL!! I DISCOVERED YOUR SECRET! :-P (Beautiful piano playing, you are the MAN!) :-D
For an american, this is a seriously hard endeavor to find a proper mail. The only site I found with 6mm is german orders only. They just want us to buy Kevlar out here lol
I was hoping you'd go into specifics on weight as well as average price, etc. Don't worry, I've got your back. I'm going to upload a video in a couple of days :) Love your channel by the way. It's one of the best.
this was amazingly helpful. I've been gun-shy about getting chainmail mainly because I have been taken to the cleaners in the past with "historically accurate" and "high quality" mail and despite needing mail for a LARP outfit, I've been dragging my feet. with your endorsement however I just bought me a shiny new shirt (except it's not really shiny, I got the blacked steel but you get my point)
Metatron, I know you really care, and that's just one of the many reasons why i admire and respect you and your work, but don't let the negativity way you down. Your dedication to this channel completely disproves those nay-sayers! Thank you for your excellent insight and really making me excited about history, weapons, and ancient warfare!
Metatron, have you ever read any of Jose Ortega y Gasset, or more specifically "The Revolt of the Masses"? I was going over another one of his essays recently when I was reminded of some of the book aforementioned, and realized something about yourself: You perfectly embody the character of the Noble man according to his philosophy. I already had a geat deal of respect for you, but after coming to this conclusion, I must say, you are by far, the most commendable TH-camr, and I honestly do in many ways idolize you.
Im making sleeves and a great helm all on my own and i really suggest making your own because you relly feel proud of it. The mail is butted galvonized but its the best for my wallet and i wont be in reenactment i think. im just 15 but maybe when i get better at it... for the moment i relly just eant to look nice on the medieval market in my town (its in a summer event) and of corse medieval week in wisby because i live in sweden
Good information concerning Galvanization of the steel there is another option, electroless nickel plating I have used this on various metal objects this process produces a good durable corrosion resistant surface and it has a nice look. Although I had my parts commercially done there are several DIY videos on youtube so plenty of options.
Mail seems like a good form of protection for security such as a bouncer especially if you wear a gambeson underneath for shock absorption and knives are a much more common weapon than guns plus they do make gloves for chefs to debone meat and cut fish especially with those super sharp knives and drunk people do like to use broken glass bottles hide weapons under their clothes.
Battlemerchant, I've got pretty much everything from them! Especially they plate armor is very durable. Love their support and if you are in a neighbour country of Germany the shipping time is around 3 days.
Excellent. My mail shirt is a Roman ring width one from Battle Merchant. Relieved to hear their shirts are good. From what I hear "stab-proof' vests are useless anyway. Apparently, they are only good for direct stabs, but crumble with cuts, which was tragically demonstrated not too long ago. Mail using a ballistic vest underneath really ought to be better, especially since in most cases you are far more likely to face a villain with a knife. Knives are cheap and plentiful, guns (in Europe at least) rare and expensive, and frequently illegal to carry these days (though I don't see that deterring crims much.)
I bought chainmail from an indian vendor and it even had graduated links as it went down. You have to relink it for the arms however. But then you have extra links if it ever needs repair, and it was 16 gauge flat half riveted/ half solid rings.
I think the most important thing to consider with maille is what you want it for. You have to be really honest with yourself about what you are actually going to use it for? Is LARP just something you want to try or are you already active in a group? Do you already attend training sessions for medieval combat at some local club or is it just something you've kind of looked at? Is your neighborhood really that dangerous? The real question here is are you going to spend potentially 100's of dollars and never end up putting it to it's best and highest use? For combat training or protection you do want something like riveted. For LARP butted is probably sufficient. However... If it is purely for cosplay/costume (i.e. intended to be worn for hours on end and not hit with anything). I would say the best option is anodized aluminum. It's lightweight, doesn't really get too hot or cold, and it's cheap (you can get a short sleeved maille shirt of this material for around $50 with free shipping on ebay). For a few more dollars you can buy a couple hundred ready made links in any color you like (just about) to personalize a shirt with tailoring it to fit and trimming it. The downside is that it is purely decorative (though I think being duller than galvanized steel it does end up looking better). It offers pretty much no actual protection. But if you're just walking around a convention with it, looking great at an office costume party, or taking the kids trick-or-treating. What more do you really need?
Metatron. Do you tell your students about your TH-cam channel? Do they make inside jokes to you? If I was your student I wouldn't be able to resist a good "Pasta" or "End Him Rightly" joke.
I have an incomplete butted vest, made of galvanized steel, but I only bought the materials, and am making it myself. I also don't have the space or equipment to make riveted. Would love to work on some riveted, though. And I do wear it a lot, mostly for exercise, and under my outer clothing.
I was wondering about the practical aspects of wearing mail. How are you supposed to dress then? Your shirt/sweatshirt, your mail underneath and under the mail? What about the heat retention? What about wearing it in summer?
I was hoping you would touch on flat vs round rings and wedge vs dome rivets. Good video, regardless. I don't see how you keep up the schedule with a video every day plus work and everything else that comes with living, like sleep. You must not sleep.
Forgot to talk about welded mail this time. For self defense the more practical model would be made of galvanized steel for durability and less maintenance, and riveted (or welded), right?
"If you're not into maintenance, you're not into armor." I can attest to that. Better be ready with your oil, rivets, leather strips, hammers and anvil, 'cause if you use the armor for more than show it is going to fail. It's going to dent and pieces will pop off, rivets will break. It's not a question if, but when.
+Metatron Could you do a video on Babylonians, Olmecs, Mayans, Incans, Aztecs or a video on the validity and practicality of fighting with just a shield like Captain America, twin swords(MOTU 200x) or sword staffs?
You can always make maille at home. Butted is the easiest. Welded is also an option if you happen to have a welding machine that can handle it or a dedicated maille welder. Riveted is also a possibility and for beginners, it will be more expensive than butter but far cheaper than welded; the only problem is noise, like when you have to pound something on an anvil. However, rivets don't really have to be hammered, rather big pliers can be used to "mushroom" them, however, hammering is easiest and does not require making a tool for the job. Same thing will work for creating the flat areas on the rings. But no matter what you do, DO NOT WELD GALVANIZED!!! Heating Zinc plating too much produces toxic fumes that can be lethal if inhaled. Zinc Plating can be removed with Acids, like Hydrochloric Acid or Acetic Acid (Vinegar) revealing the steel beneath. Do this outdoors and don't inhale the reaction products. Then a blueing or blackening product may be applied to create gun-blue or black maille. ;) Keep in mind, most wires from the hardware store cannot we hardened or tempered. Some MIG welding wires and music/spring wires can, but the second should we annealed before working the coils.
I never thought about wearing chain for personal defence I live in the us and I am a gun guy I have a pair of steel and ceramic level 3a and a regular lvl 3 cop style vest and a level 3 backer pads for my 3a plates and a stab vest I got when I was a corrections officer but I would have never figured of using mail for stab resistance coat or vest
Why did I not see this video earlier? Thanks for this, I loved this and will check out Costom Chainmail in a second :) Just wanted to add: I also would love to have you as a teacher. Or would have, since I finished school almost a decade ago :D
Custom mail seems like it would be the best investment since we are talking about personal protection. Having that attention to detail would mean that the armor might be more likely to stay together, that is incredibly important with mail.
There is honestly no really any difference in protection unless you go for something like Titanium which costs like 3000 Dollars. The difference is maintenence. With low quality you are more likely to lose rings more often /rings might break or rivets might come lose) and you need to repair your armour regulary if you are doing some heavy fighting. Protection is kinda the same tho.
I swear by Battle Merchants. Main reason is, Custom chain seem to only do flat rings. We're 13th century and they are out or period for us. Battle Merchants sell loose rings, so we build our own bespoke armour.
I'm currently making the rings by hand (or well, using a lathe). 2mm thick 12mm in diameter. though i'm still a way off acually making something out of it, it beats my other potential projects.
what do you think about the welded stainless steel mail like shark mail? i know it's not historically accurate, but for self defense, i think it would be the best. i worked at a meat processing facility in my younger days. the people who ran a knife all wore a mail glove on the hand without the knife. it worked very well to prevent accidental cuts. the knives they used were razor sharp. one old guy sharpened them all, and he was good. 30 seconds, and it was done, as long as it wasn't dropped on the floor.
Hey Metatron, Sorry for asking this multiple times on other videos, but iv'e been wanting to see a video about Ancient Norse weapons and armor. Of course, only if this is a topic you are interested in.
"Daily uploads are fine." I'm more worried about your health. This working constantly.... Teaching many classes, plus daily upload, plus a large video, plus other projects. It seems like there's no moderation there.
I completely agree, *We who LOVE Metatron fear burn out and the damage that causes.* The man knows everything except how to RELAX and take it easy sometimes. *He should have ONE day a week OFF.* (even God took a day off after creating the universe!!). Not only will this increase his longevity but the down times can be like a once fertile field given a year to grow grass and come back with richer crops and new ideas. He'll age terribly fast otherwise (think Jim Morrison).
I mean he could actually be taking days off and just make two of his "filler" videos a day sometimes. He also has stated several times that he loves making youtube videos (even more than teaching which he seems to enjoy). So it isn't entirely out of the question that he enjoys spending his free time making content. It's all about passion.
Alright, so essentially I should get a "custom tailored sleeveless galvanized riveted/welded chainmail" for self defense situations. Thanks for the info Metatron.
Maybe you could make a video about zombie go boom, i think it would be interesting, because of the fact that they often were showing the popcultural view of the weapons and their history.
Looks like they sell pieces of mail--how would you attach the "sleeves" to the "skirt"? Would you wrap multiple skirts attached at the edges to each other using the rings to cover your vital organs? Do you have a video showing how to assemble a chain mail "vest" from the "skirts" and sleeves?
Titanium suit of solid welded rings.. I'm a welder and not even sure if that's possible.. I've tried asking instructors but no one knows if you could really weld the rings closed instead of riveting.. What would you use, a TIG welding set up?
but here in Italy do I need some special permissions to own mail armor or, for example, a longsword? From what I know there are laws restrictions for knives, but what about swords?

I'm impressed with your talent at the piano
A suggestion for a video could be to talk about how landscape or environment could effect a battle :)

Thumbs up for the piano intro. :D
I'd love to find 14ga. rings that are 6mm diam. That'd be strong if welded or riveted.
If Custom Chainmail had options for layaway, It would be the absolute best.
I want mithril ...
1959Berre same. You could probably approximate the concept with titanium
Titanium suit of solid welded rings.. I'm a welder and not even sure if that's possible.. I've tried asking instructors but no one knows if you could really weld the rings closed instead of riveting.. What would you use, a TIG welding set up?
What about flat vs round rings?
Flat looks like it'd be stronger (and heavier), but has anyone done a test?
the link for customchainmail doesnt seem to take me anywhere are they down?
Always the best
Are there any other options for metal choice e.g. stainless or titanium?
Metatron! You should definitely make that piano piece one of the intro songs! :D
I think spring steel wire is quite good option for butted chainmail, but making rings from it is a pain in the ass.
but here in Italy do I need some special permissions to own mail armor or, for example, a longsword? From what I know there are laws restrictions for knives, but what about swords?
