  • A look at the practice of fishing illegally for salmon in Ireland.
    At an unspecified location in the province of Munster, Father Peter Lemass reports of the practice of illegal fishing. One man who fishes along the river Deel describes the various means used by the poachers to land a catch.
    Netting of fish and snatching (a practice where grappling hooks on a fishing line pierce the flesh of a fish anywhere on its body, in order to reel it in) are common. Some use poison, which has detrimental effects on the environment.
    When they poison the river it cleans out all the fry and the river is useless for years after.
    Another man believes that there is an art to poaching, but does not advocate the use of stroke hauling, where a weighted device is used to foul-hook a fish.
    If the fish is badly marked, you can’t sell him.
    A man who claims to be a poacher is unapologetic about his illegal methods of catching fish, and works with others to avoid being caught,
    We have ways of our own for avoiding those bailiffs.
    A local priest who is a member of an angling club that fishes along the Deel acknowledges that poaching is a problem, career poachers in particular.
    The man who comes down day after day and methodically takes out the fish one after the other see he completely ruins the river for every other one.
    This episode of ‘Radharc’ was broadcast on 21 November 1962. The presenter is Father Joe Dunn and the reporter is Father Peter Lemass.

    I remember so many stories from around my area about poaching from that time, There were reports of a couple of, bailiffs, from a nearby village who used to be on the lookout for poachers in the nearby river Feale , There was a Bailiff in a place in Kerry who had the reputation of being very diligent,on one occasion poachers knew that he was attending a social and put the heads of two salmon on his gate with a notice near the salmon ,,,Where were you when I needed you most,, This Radharc programme was one of a few that were made in the early sixties, Another was Honesty at the Fair which featured the local Abbeyfeale town .

    The real crime is that the common man can’t afford to Salmon fish in Ireland as most land surrounding rivers is not for public use and is very costly to stand on the land and fish in the river (even with a license). In the USA it’s a very different story and the common man can navigate a river on foot without fear of being locked out by private landowners - Freedom in America and complete control by the elites in Ireland. Seems contrary to the Irish Spirit, locking folks out of the fishing.

      Good question Tony I asked myself that for years only to find out recently that it was not a famine at all but a genocide there are shipping records of thousands of pounds of food being shipped out of the country while many were dying of starvation

    • @hj1651
      @hj1651 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well given the fact it was genocide not a famine idno how you’d expect people to go get fish when they were shipped off to county Clare to the coast to live (the majority of survivors ) thrown off their land by the English and put deliberate on a location where food couldn’t grow and left there to die off , they were good enough to be out picking the resources and the food and handing them over to the British including the tons upon tons of grain given so the brits could sell it back to their own people and feed their soldiers but they weren’t good enough to be kept alive, so idno how you’d expect people a handful of people to eat fish when they’ve been sent to their death after they weren’t needed anymore full stop
