It's just the general nature of the Sun's drift relative to the Earth's horizon during orbit. I wonder when this became a "thing", since it was never this big of a deal when I was there. I mostly remember a couple of days per year when it was really annoying walking back to the dorms after class because the sun was shining in your eyes the entire way, but back then I was also a cranky, overworked, sleep-deprived student. I like how they are celebrating it now, because it gives you something to anticipate instead. I also like how they recommend the third floor, because it is usually empty and the crowds of students there won't block the students needing to get to somewhere else on the main floor.
This was so much fun to watch when I was a student back in the mid-1970s. MIT is such a special place! I encourage all current students to explore as much of the institute as you can! People (students, faculty and staff) and all the amazing facilities, bottom-to-top! ❤
