    Every Sunday morning at the park my pals and I pull a sled I built. We also do heavy carries, walking lunges, constant tension squats, pushups, and ball throws, slams, and kb swings. After you've been working with the sled for a few weeks, you can really lean in at a 45 degree angle and run. Incredible for HIIT. Old guys run a risk of injury from sprinting but the sled allows you to mimic that movement pattern safely, and with a load, which is almost as good as speed. I'm 63, and sleds ARE a great addition to the old man arsenal.

      Sounds awesome. How did you build the sled?

      @@JustJulianH 2x4 pieces for platform, treated lumber for runners, drawer rails for skids, post bolted In the center, eyebolt to pull from, didn't spend a cent. Some old chains, rope or d handles, a good wide belt is nice (IronMind) but not necessary.

      Is this exercise program something you have always done or a relatively recent endeavor? I ask this because I am 63 as well and playing catch-up. I worked out fairly regularly after cancer and a heart attack after that but fell out of it to the point the body decided to fall apart with shin splints, plantar fasciitis, sciatica and other aggravating, bullshit aches and pains. i am trying to get back to optimum health and hoping I can do so.

    • @JohnBullard
      @JohnBullard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@georgehopper7310 Twenty years of mistakes and injuries led eventually to my own golden path. Fifteen months without sugar, grains, or dairy, fasting on Mondays, good salmon the only meat, eating a prodigious amount of fiber-filled foods six days a week. Eyes, skin clearer then in my twenties. I say start working out the core, also yoga to even the psoas, and stretch the fascia, regain the full squat for time, at least a full minute, then start moving weights. You will reduce your chances of hurting your back through this progression. Heavy carries and sled dragging are safe shortcuts to fitness. Kickass. Old man power!

    Making a (pull) sled is easy: get a punctured/old tyre from a car. Cut 4-6short pieces of a wood board and put them inside the tyre to make a solid bottom. Connect them with a few screws. Either wrap a cord around the tyre (you will tear the cord), or screw in a hook like the ones used for swings (coil shaped). That is it. Load with what ever you have - a bag of sand, a dumbbell, a kettlebel, plates, a rock.... Go, go, go.

  • @ststrength5044

    At 49 and under a barbell since I was 12. Sled work and Trap Bar Deads are my absolute go too for lower extremity work and of course kettlebell swings and unilateral exercises. I retired heavy deads and squats after my last PL comp when I was 41. Literally have not had one back tweak or hip pain since and kept the mass. Actually observably speaking I noticed an improvement in my vastus lateralis medialis (teardrop) development...pretty sure backward sled drags did the trick.

    Probably won't be the same as a real sled but I just bought a manual treadmill to walk backwards on. I don't know of any gyms in my area with sleds. Doing the best I can. I'm 67 and have been told I need knee replacement surgery. I don't know if I can exercise that diagnosis away but I'm gonna try with a Ben Patrick kots regime. The worst that can happen is I still need the surgery but I'm better setup for post surgery rehab! I'm going to go hard for year then see where I'm at!

    Agree the sled is a great exercise. But as time goes on, the user need to keep in mind the exercise is only as beneficial as the degree of progress with heavier weights and quicker pulls add a bit more to the degree of difficulty. That's what EXERCISE should always be about. Not just walking through the process but with a mind to push, push, push, push, through your own personal limitations. The end result is the real result of EXERCISE.

    Interesting point of view. I would rather like to see some research that tests the differences between sled work and the correct use of full range movements under load, to ascertain if what you suggest is indeed the case. As you well know, most new exercises that are not noticeably painful from the start, will always produce some level of beneficial change. Whether this is optimal or not, remains to be seen. Running or walking barefoot on a beach articulates the angle of the foot throughout all of its planes, whilst the different density of sand types splays the toes and arches of the foot, releasing tension and opening spaces between all the foot bones, thereby both softening and strengthening the feet. Healthy joints for anyone means developing strength and mobility all in the same movement, not separately. Rock Climbing is by far the best exercise system for this. The great thing about climbing is that a client cannot over exert themselves. They can only climb within their current range of fitness. It also develops tremendous mental stamina and thoroughly tests your Bullshit meter due to the fear of falling. I have seen men in their 70's and 80's scale rocks that novices in their 20's are too afraid to climb due to the fear exposure produces. Other than Special Forces work, I have yet to find another system that stimulates the bodymind as much as multi-pitch climbing. If you live in the USA contact Ron Kauk he's a Rock legend, he will show you the way....
