i've thought about this too, and i have a dark theory that she killed her original human self because she was so power-hungry and evil. it seems like something she would do at the time, however it's a very dark theory for a childrens show. another theory is that since she was the first pony to travel to this other dimension, there was a glitch in the system and her human counterpart got 'deleted'. what do you think?
Sunset's cutie mark is a YIN-YANG like sun and Stellar's cutie mark is a sun with SPIRAL in it. if we add the personality and body similarities... yes, they should be related closely.

I think sunset’s parents are dead and princess celesta adopted her because maybe just maybe her parents got killed by some kind of supernatural monster and before they got killed they left her with one of the most powerful creatures in their world the goddess of the sun the ruler of equestria celesta it’s a theory but I’m shore sunset would be heartbroken if she found out this is true.
In my head, it makes more sense that Sunset and Sunburst would be in a relationship as the parents of Luster Dawn than be siblings. Sunset, the end of the day, being the mother of Dawn, the beginning of the day, would be a nice touch.
