- In this video we begin stripping the interior of my E46 M3, including dashboard and carpet removal, in the interest of adding lightness.
I was waiting for a nice cold day to do this...

OEM parts V’s hammer and chisel 😉
9:00 Dan collecting sound deadening in a black plastic bag like it was copper pipe for a weigh in for beer money.
5 mins into job…now realising why the yanks love dry ice 😂
Top tip, heat your scraper with the blow torch till its almost red and it will go through the sound deadening like a hot knife through butter
Dry ice sits at less than -70 degrees (science) so you're about 70 degrees out trying this on a cold day. I took all of the sound deadening out of the interior of a Celica GT-Four and a Celica T-Sport in one day a couple of months ago, with £80 worth of dry ice. Worth every penny, it just falls off after a few taps. Some bits of it are a different material and can be quite stubborn even with the dry ice, but I wouldn't dream of attempting it without. Once you're done, a quick wipe over with tar & glue remover cleans up what little residue is left.
I've always done it with a hot air gun and a plastic scraper. You get it the right temp and it rolls up lovely and doesn't damage the paint. Then a bit of tardis or paraffin to remove the residue.
Can confirm, heat works best 👍
This is the best method
Same. White spirit or similar to remove residue
That dry ice method is the way to go.
I tried to use the freeze spray on my Civic FN2 track car, did absolutely nothing. Heatgun and a 75p wooden spatula from Morrisons worked a treat. Clean it up with some tar and glue to get rid of residue and comes straight off
Did the same with my EK bud, doesn't work at all does it 🤣
This was hilarious, Dan. Something satisfying about knowing everyone has shorter jobs that turn into much longer ones - not just ourselves! Then hammering away sound deadening in the freezing cold. Glad the torch worked - far nicer job.
I have Used air dusters, heat gun, just hammer and chisel but blow torch is by far the best way. Get a wire wheel on a drill (the grinder attachment might be too harsh) on what’s left over and some primer over the top leaves it mint. You can get away with out primer if your gentle with the wire wheel….
Getting a motorbike??? Top man Dan - proper petrolheads love both 2 AND 4 wheels (Well, they were good enough for Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton, Rossi, McCrae, Alonso, Hill, Vettel, etc., etc.!!!). 😜
Just don’t get into skiing , that’s one step too far
too soon!
Jesus christ that blow torch explosion caught me off guard 😂😂😂
Elbow grease is a mandatory ingredient for le race car recipe
Watching this is giving me ptsd. Thankfully, dry ice for my project was only about $50. It breaks off in hand-sized sheets... Still a lot of work, especially if you want to get it completely smooth and bare. So, I really sympathize with you. I'm excited for the car. Thanks for the vid.
I'm further into the video: WD-40 works well for getting the last of it off.
heatgun and scraper. Once all is removed, a rag and xylene with proper protective mask will remove the residue like if it were dust on a surface.
heat gun was kinda slow when i tried it before
@@dannyDC2 torch works fine in your case too, it always leaves residue with the heat method, but trust in the xylene for cleanup.
Full "Devo mode" there Dan 😂 27:04
A heatgun is the way forward over a torch mate - I stripped an E36 of sound deadening using a heatgun and a smaller, stiffer scraper and it came out great. A heat gun is less likely to set things on fire too and is just pure heat, which is what you want.
Good luck 👍
hmmm, i might give it a try on some of the riskier parts but imagined it would be quite a bit more effort/messy with the heatgun
Heat gun running in front of the scraper as you go.
Crazy you can go to a grocery store in the US and buy dry ice. Around $15 or $20 for 5 lbs.
Break it up and mix with alcohol and make a paste, then put that on the sound deadening.
I did this in my 330ci track car years ago. Started with the dry technique but it took ages. Ended up using a little gas torch, hammer and chisel/scrapers and it comes off fine - I say that it did take many many hours!!! Just need to be careful near fuel tank covers/wiring etc. Residue I removed with wire brushes on a drill. It was sprayed black inside anyway after cage was done but I do remember getting a bit obsessed with making it super-smooth!!!
I removed sound deadening from Focus mk1 3 door few years ago. It was a warm day (~+20 degrees celsius, maybe even less). I tried compressed air in a spray can. It helped, but would turn up very expensive. But then I tried direct sunlight in the middle of the day. 20 degrees isn't enough to make material soft, but direct sunlight for 10+ minutes + chisel (something widish and sharpish) made it very easy to remove. And I washed glue and residue with petrol. Direct sunlight is better than e.g. heat gun, when You can heat up big areas at the same time without effort. Just leave a car in direct sun. On other hand You can't always get direct sunlight in all places.
I recommend to try this. Not in +2 degree weather :)
p.s. I was very very disappointed with collected 5 kg of material I weighted afterwards (except sound deadening on roof, can't get sunlight there)
I feel your pain Dan! Recently did this to my mine and it was a pain in the arse! Every kilo counts though 👌🏼
How the f***, the f***ing........ it's f***ed......... OH F*** OFF!!! 🤣 I am pissing myself laughing here man - f***ing priceless!!! 🤣🤣
Just tried this on my civic too. Found if you get some off the cold freezes the glue then you can reattempt the next cold day for the rest. But like you said the Japans have pretty easy to remove deadener. Almost like they knew we didnt want it in the first place
Hard to watch considering how nice that M3 is, but I have to admire Danny's willingness to just go for it and try stuff.
Going to enjoy watching this M3 transform, I have a 330ci track car that I am currently converting into a full MSUK spec car
I used JVC freeze spray from poundland and worked a treat..
German cars for you. Thinks are applied and never meant to be removed😂
A heat gun on high and a scraper and you can get a sound deadening tile off in less than a minute then just some tar remover spray and it's all done. Very easy that way. People who make a mess of it are just doing it wrong.
I'm glad you do what you want to your car. Not modifying your own car so it's kept stock for the next owner, is the car equivilent of not fkin your missus to keep her fresh for the next guy!
I found exactly the same on my E87. Tried chipping away at it - flipping awful. Then, I switched to a heat gun. Just keep the gun moving, and you can scrape it off in large chunks.
A treat mid week, thanks Dan.
Hit air gun works far better than freezing it, it softens the adhesive and it scrapes straight off
When I did the sound deadening on my fn2 track car I tried many things
But the best was to do it on a red hot day and use a spray that cooled stuff to -50 the massive coolant drop so quick made it fall off worked better than doing it on a cold day.
Currently sat polishing me trims for me mini, time to stick the Mekanik on and chill
Hope you end up racing this Dan, loved watching you in the E46
i pulled out roughly 12kg on my facelift EK Civic hatch. i got out every little bit tho. not one little single mat stayed in there.
the biggest chunk was the thick sound deadning mat behind the dash on the firewall.
i would imagine on a "premium market" car like a 3 series bmw it must be more then 12kg.
here's hoping
Explosion and squeaky toy edit made me think it was a rocketpoweredmohawk vid
BRING THE HEAT!!!
If you leave the rag soaked in petrol / thinners on the glue for a couple of mins first it'll come straight off 👌 maybe paint too tho...
Heatgun - i heated mine up until it was bubbling. Then just scraped it off like it was butter with a metal scraper
Gt85 will remove the tar almost immediately
Wipe up with paper towel
Ez
happy Sunday triple c 🏆 🏆 🏆
That stuff sticks like 💩to a blanket but "It'll all peel off when it's dry" as the old man said when he crapped in the bed and pushed it down with his feet!
😅wtf
@@dannyDC2 Glad to make you laugh, Dan! 😀
I used an oscillating multi tool to get underseal off and it worked a charm
Messy
Heat gun, scraper then wipe off with white spirit. Don't bother with thinners, petrol or brake cleaner it flashes off too quickly!
Yeeeyeee motorbike time bbyy
Munchen Munich ftw Dan!
Yes get a motorbike Dan, way more fun with today's roads
Oh yes oh yes dan
I bet she will be a lot more nimble when all that weight comes off her .. 👍
On my e36 I used a plumbing torch, the sheets peeled off in one piece
Wish the dark blue one was becoming race car and the estrol was staying street
ive done it on my EK in -2°C and it was dead easy on almost all the mats.
there were a few smaller ones that didnt seem to be impressed by low temps. i had so scrape them out with a heat gun.
worked well enough tho. all together probably half a day.
yes on my jap cars it was so easy when it was cold, BMW made of stronger stuff!
@@dannyDC2 defenetly they used different mats/glue. this seemed very tideous to do on the whole car tbh
Auto Finesse Olbitarate will get the rest off an absolute treat lad!!! Did my Clio with it in no time at all!
better than petrol?
@@dannyDC2 I'll send you a pic via Instagram!

Its crazy how much room an interior takes up when it leaves the car
Those pedal mounts have probably caused as much frustration as whamen since theyve been around
glad i'm not the only one
I need to do this on my Citroen AX rally build... Oh no, wait, that car doesn't have any 🤣
get hold of some tar remover from autoglym
see if they will sponsor you
I recon that you set fire to the freez spray 😅
Aliens
Air chisel is what I used bit noisy but easy. Still had to buzz all the residue of after though
savage
heat the scraper till glowing
Another great video. How you find the energy for that thoughI dont know.
Omg just use the dry ice lol. It takes a minute once the dry ice does its thing.
Need a warm day, bit of heat and just peels up
Mil dollar question pending, 10kgs, will it make a difference on a 300+ hp car or just a ruined M3 E46?
Love the vids mate but can’t help thinking is it all worth it for 10 or 15 kgs ?
Get the dash flocked while it's out.
I love omelettes !!
Once i tuck all the interior out of my volvo v70 t5 p2 and i laffed my head off the car stood up in the air like it was on stilts handeling was ruined i had to get bc coilovers and convert the rear to coilovers just for it to sit properly again
Re: future M3 values.... cut, chop, modify, ruin it, and don't look back! Bringatrailer is full of cars that were parked with 3km on the clock and 99.9999% of them don't even _break even_ when you factor in inflation, 37 years of maintenance/storage costs, insurance, and whatever else. These "collectors" have not only put the prices of enthusiast cars out of reach for normal people, they've _lost_ money on their investment, and they didn't even _drive_ the fookin things! 🤬
You should have just removed the carpets and saved yourself a day freezing, having a dump will save you more weight than the sticky stuff 😮..... Look on the bright side, sell some of the bits you removed and buy a sweeping brush 😂
Note made for when i do the Mini track car. Looks like the same stuff....
Did this to my R53 track car. Tried the dry ice method. But it seems the BMW adhesive is just something else. Had more success using a hot air gun (paint remover) and a scraper
Much is a can of pipe freeze these days??
Damn you couldn’t have done all this to a titanium silver car 😢
Fucking hell that was painful to watch…. But I watched it! 👀
hey I spilled diesel on the damping material and it dissolved
Get ya sel to Euro car parts buy some Normfest Terpanol (smells canny nice like oranges) that will get the residue off no probs
Will take a look
❄️🙌🤙
Does this still have aircon pump and pipes? If yes,you could save like 10kg easy on that. All the speakers and sub+ door cards would be another 10kg.
yes still factory there
21:00 Molchat Doma 👀
haha thank spotify
@@dannyDC2 🎩👌
Pipe freeze
Don't you tease me talking about motorbikes.
You could get it of with a heat gun much easy if you dont have dry ice
kinda slow and messy when i tried it before, torch seems better
@@dannyDC2 for me was very easy, not leaving glue where the sound deadening was hard, where is soft it gets very sticky.
And i put heat on a large area and leave it for 15 sec then starting to scrape and it removed big chunks.
Was that a thermos of Bovril? Careful lad you might end up with gout.
double bovril
22:12 😅
4:26 man suffers from temporary Tourette’s
I'd recommend Goodmans freeze spray from poundland, it's bang on. Yours is shit
Wait, why are you removing this?
Because it’s mass I don’t wanna carry around
It won’t make any difference to the performance of the car, lucky if you remove 5kg of sound deadening which is probably also working to stiffen the thin floor panels
Painful to watch at the start there... but only cos I know it does just 'pop off' some cars in t' cold... when I done my mini I put bottles of water in freezer n then chucked them in the footwell for half hour before trying... petrol is good for getting the residue off
4:44 What’s with the long shifter kit? Did I miss something?
Ah yeah maybe should have mentioned that. Not sure if I videoed it when doing the gearbox
It’s from PMC motorsport. It has an original “feel” but is taller
Why is this needed? Lool
Though I had started watching a 80s german porn video with that moustache
Heat and scrape works best, then remove glue residue with petrol
Done 2 cars like this
Get a co2 fire extinguisher
i do have one but i'd like some more
Looking like skid marks 😅
You tube guides.
If there one 15 minute video and 3 5min videos int eh same subject. I ain’t touching the 15min video. I’ll watch all 3 5min ones instead
Poor thing. You're repeating a lot of stuff you did with the Integra, and look how that's ended up 😢
Them's fightin' words...
Still own it
Better bet is to use a wire brush disc attachment on a grinder.
It’s a messy job but not nearly as much elbow grease, and you don’t need to heat/cool it either.
That sounds very messy
27:19 loved the rant about us twats I’m the comment section 😂
Just to piss you off I’d have done you a decent deal for that rolling shell for an e36 with lightweight bonnet boot and doors with no sound deadening 🫢.
30:00 top tip
Soak a cloth in thinners , cover the area , leave for half an hour an wipe .
Just no smoking and grinding obviously
i'd be nothing without the comment section!! E36 sounds good
@@dannyDC2 😆seriously it would fry my brain dealing with the comments section.
It’s like bar chats at the pub with weird strangers sometimes. But generally we’re all decent folks 😂
please stay away from motorbikes, they have a nasty habit of killing cool race car drivers. Atsushi Kuroi springs to mind
