This is what used to be called "blue-eyed soul", by one of my country's finest bands. If you liked this you'll love Pick Up The Pieces and Cut The Cake.
This is one of my favorite songs that's on my Playlist. Has that funk in and out. They are Scottish brothers who has soul. Great reactions yall. Nothing like the 70s. Definitely check out their other hits to dance to.
When AWB was on Soul Train, they played live, when most of the groups used record tracks and lip-synced. They wanted to prove they were actually playing and singing. Other hits, School boy Crush, Cut the Cake, Work to Do, Person to Person, just a few.
Nothing Average about this band ❤️ The lead singer is Scottish ( Hamish Stewart ) try " Queen of my Soul " or " Let's go round again " both fantastic tracks ❤️❤️
OMG 😳. Y’all facial expressions are hilarious 😆 and I’m here for it. By the way, I was 10 years old when this song came out in 1977 and this album in my household was on heavy rotation.
I was fortunate enough to see AWB in concert in Hollywood back in the day. They had a special guest there that also showed up and that was Marvin Gaye. How special was that!
That's why back in the day Their faces was not on the cover only AWB" because they didn't think the black community would except them which they probably wouldn't have to be honest I was shocked to find out they were a black and white bad ass band and still went to buy their first album and the rest is history 🙏🙏🙏🙏💙🎵🎶
AWB, ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS, THE WHOLE BAND WAS TIGHT! ALAN AND HAMISH VOICES ARE MADE FOR EACH OTHER SOMETIMES IT WAS HARD TO TELL WHICH ONE WAS SINGING. I LOVE THESE GUYS AND I HAVE AT LEAST 6 ALBUMS, THEY'RE A BIG PART OF MY TEENAGE YEARS. STAY SAFE
Black people in America didn’t know that this band was actually white until the walked out on stage, so yes you are correct don’t judge a book by it’s cover
Cloudy is another one of their slow jams. Then add School boy crush, Pick up the pieces. They def had us mesmerized in the 70/80 school boy crush, is one skating rinks staples
AWB was named by a female singer /Bonnie Bramlett, when she first heard them, she said they sounded more like a soul band than an average white band. Hamish Stuart is the one with that great soulful voice. Another great song by him, after he left the group, He formed another group including the drummer Steve Ferrone from AWB, The group was called, Easy Pieces, and the song: Tuggin at my Heartstring. You guys should check out that sound and play it.
From Scotland, with a large following from soul and r&b fans. Queen of my Soul, Cloudy, Schoolboy Crush, Pick up the Pieces, Person to Person, Cut the Cake are some suggestions.Dive deep. They have a lot of bangers. Enjoyed this reaction and look forward to more AWB on this channel. Peace.
Hey Shawn and Mel, this was nice, it kinda had Smokey vibes. Some more suggestions from them would be: "Person To Person", "Only A School Boy Crush", "Pick Up The Pieces", "Work To Do", "Cut The Cake". I love you guys. :)
Every black person in America had this album back in the day and played the shit out of it at the roller skating rink every house party in their cars everywhere
Check out Average White Band (AWB) appearances on Soul Train. "Cut The Cake", "Person to Person" " Queen of My Soul" "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" or "School Boy Crush" The singer with the beard, Alan Gorie continues to lead AWB and they have about 30 albums from the 70's up to the present. The high voice singer, Hamish Stuart left AWB in '82 to join Paul McCartney's band. He currently leads the other half of the original AWB and calls them 360°. They are from Scotland and before starting AWB they were the backup band for American soul singers touring Europe. They often backed Ben E. King and feature him on an album. There are many acts that might be considered "cultural appropriation" but AWB has always been innovators in "Black" funk music, rather than copycats.
Born and bred in Bonnie Scotland people, , ,nobody more funky or soulful on this side of the pond ! We Scots have always been in love with soul music and funk, it's in our blood. Check out the white album AWB, , , it's a beaut !
AWB was the very first band I ever saw in concert when I was around 14. They've been one of my top three bands ever since!!! The first song I heard them sing was "IF I EVER LOSE THIS HEAVEN," and I was totally sold on 'em!! Hamish sang the heck outta that song....he built up to such a SOULFUL, PASSIONATE ending!!!
I Loved AWB when I was a teenager... We would call this groups sound "blue-eyed soul". This song brought back Great memories, it was definitely an A++ slow dancing song... lol! In all these years this is the first time I've ever heard them sing this song live, so thank!🤗👍🏾
Their name...LEGENDARY!! Their music....TIMELESS!! Music transcends....knows no-boundaries...only the limitations set forth by...lol....Great reaction!! This was when funk meant FUNK!! That FUNKY RnB!!
Oh yeah! Some really smooth soul. AWB was and are great band. Brings back some good memories of backyard bbq's and house parties back in the day. And yes, they are from Scotland 😎.
You need to listen to the Average White Band sing this same song live at House of Blues. They are older here, but their voices still sound FANTANTASTIC, and they sing it a little differently, there is a solo with the saxophonist, and the song lasts a little longer -- you WILL love it!! --- Love you Shawn & Mel, you are BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE!! ❤️❤️
I am blessed to have seen them perform this live on the "Soul Searchin" tour. Oh my god! Such funk and soul magic from a bunch of white guys from Scotland. It was a 50/50 black and white mixed race audience, in 1976. A first for a hunky like me who is the son of a long lost jazz musician pianist who was way ahead of her time. Check out their performances on Soul Train. This song defines an important phase in my life!
The reaction of both of you at the exact same time was priceless. It was so funny how you both knew that the name did not represent the band. “Average “, “what you talking bout Willis”, “ ain’t nothing average about these guys”. Are you kidding me, “ don’t judge a book....”. Absolutely priceless. Both lead singers are good and they complement each other perfectly. When the band was put together back in the 70’s, in Scotland, they knew they had something and they soared well into the 1980’s. Check out their “Soul Searching”, “ Shine”, “Feel No Fret”, “Benny & Us” albums just to name a few.
These Scottish brothas got a lot of soul. That's Hamish singing lead. These guys are still performing today. You can check out the original studio recording from the late 70s.
Thanks for the video, every time i watch your videos you two seem like such positive layed back, Beautiful people, your insight on music is right on. 🎸🌹😎
Before they were famous They were playing at a Downtown Pasadena bar called "The Loch Ness Monster" which was owned by an Irish guy who helped UK bands get exposure in the Sates. I was a regular, Guiness Stout on tap, & Live Music. I got to know them, being a regular & Blown away by "White Soul" from Ireland. There was patio out back with a door out to the alley where I & others went to smoke "something" during breaks. The lead singer & a couple others let me share, so we chatted. There was 5, or 6 of them living in some 1 room place the bar owner arranged, the bar;s dance floor/band corner was maybe 10 yards square, with the 5-7 guys in maybe 15'x 8' corner, no stage, the Bass player had to lift his guitar neck to let people into restroom. One time they told me, don't let the drummer smoke any, he can't handle it, but they looked forward to my offerings at break, & often were even more impressive after the Breaks. This went on for a few months & they also played some places that were springing up and changing Öld-town Pasadena from drunks & prostitutes to Night clubs & 5 star dining with Valet service. Any way one night while passing the "smoke"around in the alley, the lead singer says: "Look, we got a record deal!"& then he shows me a check for $30K or so, just a signing bonus (they were BROKE at the time) He said "Stevie Wonder"s People came to see them & were Blown Away. I think the bar owner invited them & then helped the guys with the contract, not sure about that, but anyway that was the last time I saw them. And the rest as they say..................
I knew it! Hammish got you. I remember seeing this band on Soul Train when I was a kid and watching their face's drop when Hammish's voice got them. Play, "If I ever lose this heaven." That man can still sing!
I love seeing the shock on Americans' faces when they first hear these guys, they were one of the best soul bands ever.
This is what used to be called "blue-eyed soul", by one of my country's finest bands. If you liked this you'll love Pick Up The Pieces and Cut The Cake.
Yes indeed👍💯
Exactly! House party!
It ant blue eyed soul it's pure black soul music.
You're from Scotland?
@@RTDavis0503 Aye. Proudly so.
AWB, soul brothers from Scotland. One of the funkiest groups ever. Inspired by the many R&B American groups they grew up listening to.
I was a teenager when this song came out and here in Los Angeles, all the black radio stations played the song all day, everyday. We loved it!
Me too, 61... we were killing the song! ❤❤❤ Springfield Mo 70s

Thank you so much for playing this song. What a great song, and what a great band. Not just a white band, but a Scottish band, and soulful as hell!
Nothing Average about this band ❤️ The lead singer is Scottish ( Hamish Stewart ) try " Queen of my Soul " or " Let's go round again " both fantastic tracks ❤️❤️
I was devastated when Hamish left the band. Nobody, but NOBODY, can replace Hamish!!!
Definitely above average!
The original band is from Scotland. Until their original drummer died and was replaced by Steve Ferone, who is black and from England.
Not Stewart , it's British Stuart.
YES to Queen of my soul!!!
OMG 😳. Y’all facial expressions are hilarious 😆 and I’m here for it. By the way, I was 10 years old when this song came out in 1977 and this album in my household was on heavy rotation.
The lead singer Hamish Stuart is one of the great voices of the 70s . He’s also in Paul McCartney’s band 🤷🏽♂️
I grew up in the 70’s they were the shit…
Glad to see you react to these guys. They have a great catalogue with songs like Pick up the Pieces, Cut the Cake, School boy Crush, Queen of my Soul.
It’s butter! Butter that was oldschool slowly melted in pot on a stove 😍
Beautiful song, amazing band.
I was fortunate enough to see AWB in concert in Hollywood back in the day. They had a special guest there that also showed up and that was Marvin Gaye. How special was that!
That's why I love the older songs because music has no color, if it did it would be a rainbow of colors. Thank you so much for your reaction

Was in High School when AWB was going strong in the early 70’s. Starting with “pick up the pieces.”We knew they were white.

I was in the 82d at Ft Bragg and would listen to Jo Lee from Raleigh, NC. She played great songs. I bought the 8-track of AWB.
AWB was named by a female singer /Bonnie Bramlett, when she first heard them,

AWB - AWESOME WHITE BROTHERS ❤
This song reminds me of Smokey Robinson at times, it's like an Earth Wind & Fire ballad. Such a cool vibe.
Iam so proud you guys have reacted to excellent world icons. Enjoy.
AWB us from Scotland, I think - and their #1 HUGE hit was an instrumental called "Pick Up The Pieces."
Born and bred in Bonnie Scotland people, , ,nobody more funky or soulful on this side of the pond ! We Scots have always been in love with soul music and funk, it's in our blood. Check out the white album AWB, , , it's a beaut !
Always have loved this song. Thank you.
Another group that has a similar vibe, from the same era, is Tower of Power. Thanks for the reaction!
So Very Hard To Go!
They toured together for years. Actually Brent Carter lead singer for AWB, sang lead for Tower Of Power, also. And he a beast.
Thats how we felt listening to AWB over the Motown air waves back then..we were blown away that these dudes were from Scotland..

Another one of their biggest hit is School Boy Crush which has been sampled in so many rap songs it’s unbelievable
The Jefferson starship made a song that you should play. The name of the song is with your love. It has a lot of soul.
Yep, one of the Greatest songs ever. Too Bad the song didn't last 11 minutes instead of 3 and a half.
Saw these guys play live a couple of times back in the late 1970's at the Odeon, New Street, Birmingham, UK. Simply brilliant!!!
