What you are seeing here folks is a legendary #1 song being performed at the time it was a hit on the charts. No words can describe just how amazing it is to watch this video.
It's a miracle this was preserved because so much media from this era is lost. Networks would save money by reusing tape, which of course meant wiping the contents. So there's so many things that were seen then and never again.
@@thekidfromiowa yes, miraculous - that's the case for an old British show, Dixon of Dock Green - so many episodes of that & many other shows, are lost for that exact same reason. Such a shame.

At some point during the 50s, they were the most popular singing group on the planet! They also happen to be my all time singing group! And Tony Williams, fo r my money, had the greatest and most beautiful voice from that great period from the pop era! They also had some of the most beautiful songs and wonderful lyrics you’ll ever come across!
How funny! I was your age when I first discovered The Platters in 2008. They were playing "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" during a car commercial of all things during Thanksgiving. 😂 They're still my favorite group from the 50s as well. Have you heard of Connie Francis? She's another popular artist from the 50s and sang a song called "Who's Sorry Now?" If you like "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" you'll probably enjoy that one as well.
My true love was true ~ those people were real fortunate during The Platters era. Human beings were modest and gentle like down to earth. Let alone those evenings that were full of extraordinary vibes...
I love how American Graffiti used this song at the high school dance. This is literal gold and another song written today could never hold a candle to this masterpiece.
Why couldn't I have been born in a time when I could listen to this sweet and tearful standard number in real-time in my youth … Please console me, a '92 🇯🇵 who missed my birthtime gacha😂
As a teenager living in the 21st century, I must say that this is one of the greatest vocal songs done. Probably my favorite by The Platters as well. The soft singing. The string arrangements. The harmonies. It always brings a chill down my spine
Me too. This song does something to your soul, the melody the arrangement the harmonies it transforms you. I was only 8-1958 skating to this song. What a thrill. A perfect set of voices put together. This song shall forever go down as best of the 50’s The world renown The Platters.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever, performed by one of the most talented groups of all time. This man had such a lovely voice! Thank you, Ed Sullivan, for your great show!😊
We can keep them alive in our hearts & souls & hope they never will be forgotten - I have been given hope by my nephew, he is crazy for Billie Holiday & he found her all on his own - no "listen to this" from me, that goes nowhere!
Worked in a restaurant when I was 18. They performed in the bar. My friend and I couldn't go in because we were underage, but stood in the kitchen door and listened.😂
Back in '58 I told my mom that I liked a new song called Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. She told me it was an old song, and I could not imagine because I listened to rock and roll and I was just hearing it. Years later I saw it sung in an old movie and then I realized that the song was old, but not the Platters' version. The appeared on Perry Como in 1956 (that show is here on YT) but their appearances are in a manner where the segments could be cut out for the South. Even this one from Sullivan was probably cut out in '59.
My two favourite songs of all time are unchained melody by the Righteous Brothers and of course Smoke gets in your eyes by the Platters . These two recordings will stand the test of time
Finally one of the greatest performances on the Sullivan show makes it to the channel! Here's the story behind this legendary performance. Earlier in the show, the Platters sang the theme song to "The Sound and the Fury" (another great performance), and Ed said they would be back later in the show. "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" occurred right at the end of the episode. In the last five minutes of airtime, Ed came on and said they were out of time. The Platters, who were waiting on stage, wouldn't be able to sing again and he apologized for it. He had someone else on who took up extra time and Ed told the audience it was necessary to eliminate the second number of the Platters. The Platters were just about to leave when you hear a voice from offstage tell Ed "You have time for the second number". Ed looks over and says excitedly, "We have, really?! Fine, wonderful! We have time! C'mon, the Platters!" after which he motions for the Platters to hurry and we ended up with this incredible performance of the number one hit, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes". "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" was written by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach in 1933. Originally, when Kern's estate found that a "rock and roll group" was going to do a remake of Kern's legendary ballad, they tried to get it stopped, believing it was going to be a redone in a teen rock style assumedly. After the record came out and they heard this beautiful rendition, they apparently changed their minds. In my opinion, no one has sung "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" better than lead singer Tony Williams and the Platters. I have wondered for decades why the Platters were never included in any "Best of Sullivan" packaged show, and I'm so glad to see this is being rectified on this channel. Thank you Ed Sullivan channel! I hope you will continue to post their songs. P. S. to the uploaders: As you are going through their appearances, please note that there is a lost performance of the Platters singing "My Prayer" on August 12, 1956. It is mislabeled in the Historic Films archives as "Duwop" with no group name but with the song title "My Prayer" listed. According to newspaper listings of the time, The Platters appeared singing their number one hit. I've never seen this, and I hope it will be posted here, along with all the other performances which haven't been seen in many years.
I can only imagine what a special moment it was to witness this live in person or on the television set….probably was like the first trip to the moon in ‘69
