    Comfrey was used during the Civil War to reduce bleeding. I have used it when I cut myself in my woodshop and the juice of the plant is excellent to reduce the flow of blood and aid in the healing process

    Maybe you should plant a bunch of the comfrey on your mud slide hills, maybe the deep roots can hold it back.

      Will any of your animals eat it? I understand it is eatable even for humans. To bad it doesn't taste good because we could feed the world the way it grows.@@RedToolHouse

      The chickens will eat it a day or two after it is cut. Trying to look at drying it in bulk for a feed supplement.

    I'm having so much fun watching your video. I have a question, though, about monkey grass. I wonder if that would work well as a border plant to keep grass from invading beds. What do you think?
    In terms of comfrey, I grow it too but (shamefully) have never used it. I wonder if I can just use it as a mulch to keep weeds down.

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Country Frau monkey grass does make a decent barrier. Even the creeping Charlie has a hard time getting through. Comfrey works well as weed control too.

    • @craigm9629
      @craigm9629 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Comfrey is often used as a grass / garden barrier. It will shade out the grass when planted along the perimeter of your garden.
      Then when it grows, you cut the stalks near the ground, and lay the leaves as you would any mulch around plants you want to fertilize.

  • @nicholasnapier2684
    @nicholasnapier2684 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Do you think that you could use that for goats and cows and things like that chickens as you want suggested but you'd have to like put it through a wood chipper or some sort of leaf chipper something like that I've gotten into that part of that because I want to be self-sufficient without having to buy feeds that's my purpose of asking....

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really want to explore drying it on large scale and using it in a feed ration. Perhaps ground or shredded. Haven't heard of anyone doing that so there may be an issue someone has encountered.

    For a cat that is very generous. They were honoring you specifically in your truck, with the better portion of their kill as a sign of their affection. My Dad once got the entire bodying a squirrel minus the head.
    Are you chopping and dropping the comfrey leaves around the garden?

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't fell very honored by my cats. Especially when they track up my truck with dirty paws. We chop and drop around our perennials right now.

    I'm wondering how to use comfrey for apple trees. Our apples are two years planted and aren't really thriving.

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Country Frau I would plant it around the base of the trees and then chop and drop it each time it gets tall.

  • @charlesburkhart800
    @charlesburkhart800 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I planted comfrey TOO CLOSE (3 ft) to our small orchard trees. They get 4 ft high and wide and my husband does not like them. Well, they will be there when we die! No getting rid of comfrey. Might be easier to plant it alone away from the garden and cut there, bring it to the orchard for mulch. I wish I had known it gets so big. PS Did you guys start with wine? LOL

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just chop it down. We do 3 times a year and lay it around the trees. Really help fertilize them. No wine. Maybe we should have and that would have mellowed us out more!

    Three times as much protein as soybeans? Soybeans have a protein content of 36%. Three times of that is 108%. Besides, a soft and watery plant tissue cannot have more protein than a solid form. The info must be wrong somewhere.

    You getting the goofy farts makes for a really hard to watch video. I like you real well so I stay with but comfrey is something dear to me and I kept waiting for you to make a point which I never really got from this meaning that its supposed to be a laugh along and not a learn along. I have used comfrey when I had a compound fracture in my good arm. I had to splint it with the ax handle as the bone came out of my skin for about two or more inches. I pissed my pants and pushed the bone in with my thumb on my weak arm which really I was weak all over then wrapped it up with stripes in tore out of my shirt sleeve then finished it with black electrical tape off the dash of my truck and drove twenty miles to a doctor. I was so weak by that time that I passed out getting out of my truck in front of his office and some people seen me and drug me in to his office. That doctor had sewed me up a few times before and he kept some of the people there to hold me down should I come too. He told them to not let me hit him as I had knocked him dizzy once before when I broke my leg in two places. I got a total of fifty stitches that time and when he wrapped it up I was talking to him I was begging for a working wrap (we didn't have any casts there and I was supposed to go down to the next town and get the cast put on. I just went home and had the wife wrap my arm up with comfrey leaves right tight under the wrap. I had that changed every night and it seeped a lot but didn't smell so kept working cause I had a family to feed. I also had went into debt at the bank and I couldn't make it on a little insurance check. That comfrey made it heal super fast and the bone wasn't healed all the way but the skin was and it made the healing the bone worse. I eventually went in and they cut it open so it could heal an I was scared to lose my place but the people around me made up a bake and blanket sale and gave us money for the house/land payment which I thought was very kind of them. Point is that comfrey does heal really good. And talk about energy, make it into tea for hot drink for yourself and it is just loaded with good stuff.Well I guess this is payback, I wrote too much but I can't say enough about comfrey
