No one serves it without horseradish and or mayo. Also the taste of the jarred fish tastes nothing like an appetizing store or any house wife would make. Its like comparing cat food to tuna salad.
I had to eat this when I was young and I hated it. The first few bites were the most difficult to get down, but if they stayed down, usually I could finish the rest without getting sick. That was always the worst part of dinner, I really dreaded it.
i am a ultra orthodox jew and we make it from scratch! i never touch the jar ones. its like saying you hate cheese burgers, because you hate cheese burgers it from a can!
I thought there was something amiss here. I'm not Jewish but my aunty loves gefilte fish so we eat it regularly, and this is definitely not real gefilte fish. I don't love gefilte fish, it's too sweet for me, but it's not as bad as this.
So, I happened to run into a jar in the discount section at Kroger yesterday. Ok, I've been meaning to try it for years. It's reminiscent of the fried fish patties my grandmother made, just cold, boiled instead of fried, and in jelled fish broth. So... it's ok. Then I saw a few suggestions of horseradish and dill, so I tried adding those. Ok, it's actually really good. And yes, I like the jelled broth.
Gefilte fish is awesome. Even if it fishy and weird. Of course, they have Manischewitz brand. Because Manischewitz seems to have a monopoly on most random kosher products.

Where ma Jewish homies at?! I never had gefilte fish cuz I'm a vegetarian but that's an iconic food of us the Jewish people! I hope next Jewish food they taste is Jahnun! My mom makes THE BEST jahnun ever! And the best thing is, it's not as fattening as the frozen jahnun in stores because butter is used instead of some sort of food that is like butter but has more calories.
Gefilte fish is slightly more appetizing when it is homemade and cooked in rolls. But as an Orthodox person, I still have no idea why we eat this stuff. I mean, I know *why* we eat this stuff. I just don't know why we *eat* this stuff.
they should try not jarred gefilte fish, it tastes way better. Basically it comes frozen & you cook it in the oven for a certain amount of time & then eat it with red horseradish it's really good (:
I've been in arguments about this. I'm only part Jewish, so I get "but no you just don't have a taste for it or understand." No, it's objectively terrible.
@@SunnyDMentia it's objectively 500 times better than chopped liver though lol. Yup. The kind served in glatt kosher markets is INFINITELY better too. Not canned. Not in a weird fat sausage shape usually. Not slimy. Just a dryer pleasant taste I liken to "Chicken meatloaf" with the tiniest hint of fish served with carrots on the side.

Proper old fashioned gefilte fisch is actually served filled into the skin of a fish (gefilte fisch means filled fish) so the fish looks whole but is really deboned and filled mashed fish. It's very difficult to get right so that it looks realistic.
see we all grew up on jarred gefilte fish, but now it's time to grow up, get the frozen gefilte fish loaves that you simmer yourself in water with carrots and onions, it's really sweet, it has a nicer texture, and there's no gel! it's so yummy.

*NOOOO!!!* A real Gefilte fish must be made by an experienced grandma. Canned gefilte fish is disgusting.
Also, Gefilte fish translates to ''Stuffed fish'' from Yiddish. Truly traditional Gefilte fish is a sliced fish stuffed with this. AND SERVED WITH CARROTS!
The "stuffing" is that when it is boiled they used to wrap it up in the fish skin for cooking
Not just the skin, also a this layer of the fish flesh. I'm Jewish and my grandma makes real gefilte fish and also teaches me how to do it myself. ;)

gefilte fish is only good if it's home made
it's disgusting from a jar
That is SOOO true for some many recipes! BTW, Gefilte Fisch can be served hot...with mustard.
Rush hour is the only reason why I know what this is.
tastes so much better fresh. i'm not a fan of the jarred or, worse yet, canned version
Yeah, agreed. My grandmother used to make the best gefilte anyone could ever have.
Jarred isn’t bad. Never has fresh made but I’m sure it’s superb.
I love gefilte fish, but as a Jewish person who was raised on it, u can see why they wouldn't want to eat it. It looks like cat food.
I love ox liver but everyone I've ever know hates it : )
Damn it, now I want gefilte fish with horseradish.
Ew, I bet your farts are disgusting 🤢 🤮
There are store that sell fresh Gefilte Fish, not from a jar. Much better. Sweeter. Traditionally eaten with horseradish. I love it.
Never had it before but have seen it in stores.
Sounds better than lutifisk (SP?)
I would give it a try!👍🏻

Gefilte fish is slightly more appetizing when it is homemade and cooked in rolls. But as an Orthodox person, I still have no idea why we eat this stuff.

Just tried it from the one they sell at whole foods Yehuda brand from Israel. Its good and made with carrots, mild onions and what not. Broth is nice.
Young people usually hate "old" foods. I wonder if our grandchildren are going to gag at the sight of fries
fries are just fried potatoes. it's simple and everyone loves potatoes
Especially if they're not raised on it like a lot of gentiles weren't.
My dad and I always watch my mom eat this at Passover. We happily pass it up. I'm not a big fish person.
