Years ago, I went into a Panera Bread in downtown Washington D.C. and ordered a large bowl of macaroni and cheese. I was eating in, so they gave me a large ceramic bowl with an incredibly small serving of macaroni and cheese in the bottom of the large bowl. It was so small; I was laughing even though I paid pretty much ten dollars for it. They did give me a large bowl and they did give me some macaroni. I mean I still laugh about that today. I was on a work lunch, and they had already run long on my time, and I never went back to Panera Bread again. Large bowl and one scoop of macaroni and cheese...simply hilarious.
My mother growing up in HS bought Panera a lot, and some of the food I was so confused on why it was so overpriced for a lot of times so little food or just a 'bread' sandwich practically. A Side Story: I never went to Panera after HS, 5 years now I'm still sick of it. And now days I doordash as a driver for a couple years and saw someone eat Panera while waiting for them to finish making my pick-up meal. And watch the person who looked fine, eat a Panera sandwich and talking to friends or family, then prompty just suddenly started looking sick and threw up next to their table on the floor. I was like "Wow, and this is a good reason why I don't eat here" Not the first time I've seen people puke either from eating Panera in different locations. Hard to believe staff screw up that badly in multiple locations at that point.
Great review Joe. I am surprised, (I guess I shouldn't be) that Panera Bread didn't give you a cup of marinara sauce to dip the sandwich in. Too much for not enough. A Panera Bread standard. Please be careful spinning around in the chair with that machete in your hand. Yes and no on Starbucks, they have the most consistent cold brew coffee in the country. Saved me in many cities that don't have a good cold brew scene.
I'm from St. Louis County, and Panera got its start in this area as the "St. Louis Bread Company," which is still what it's called in my town. When it was relatively new in the mid-90s, it was great. The food was good and reasonably priced. I used to love the Ham and Swiss on Rye bread. It was $3 or $4 and you got a nice, thick stack of ham, around four slices of swiss (two on top, two on bottom) and you got free pickles, crunchy kettle chips, and a drink. Sometime after they expanded and went national, the prices went up, the meat went down, and the bread got thinner. I don't go there to eat anymore because I can make a similar sandwich at home much cheaper. The only upside is the bread, but it's too expensive for what they give you nowadays. Excellent review, as always, by the way!
It was dried out. My version would have a great tasting sauce mushrooms onions green peppers nice chunks of fresh mozzarella cheese not this shredded kind.
I just got this sandwich and yes I agree they didn't even put any sauce on my baguette this was after me going back to the place after they forgot to put the sandwich in my bag in the drive thru. I should've made my own it would've been hittin.
I think they are really struggling getting good help and trying way to hard to increase the bottom line to the determent of putting out something they people will seek out. thanks for letting me know. Sometimes I feel like I am a little hard on places after the fact.
As much as I try I’m just not overly impressed with Panera. I think the wait is long, the price is high, the portions are small, and I don’t like the side offerings of a hunk of bread, apple, or chips. I do like the breads and bagels but I can get better for less at my local bakery. I just don’t get the hype unless it’s the want to be seen crowd that make it trendy. I leave feeling ripped off and stupid for having went to Panera so I rarely go. I trust your review.
They make these. Once a month I process end-of-day baked goods on the way to the local food pantry and there are always the rejected baguettes. It's kinda sad. Since they are an actual bakery there is a great potential for quality products. The stores I am familiar with are struggling to hire and retain quality workers--especially bakers. Some of the breads are excellent. Too bad they struggle making sandwiches. The breads come in frozen loaves like Subway. Tempering and baking still seems to be a challenge at times.
Joe- have you ever considered trying one of the food box delivery companies? They seem to be pretty trendy. I just tried the daily harvest. There are many companies to choose from, some you prepare the meals and some you just heat and serve.

As I have said before I do not care for Panera. Whenever I see one I think of preppy hipsters, not for me. To be fair I have tried them a few times, again not for me. As I premier food joint the least I would expect is to get close to what I order for what I am paying for. It looks like you got the ones that got run over by the delivery truck. And I would say that it needs a lot more of everything.
At this rate, I'd rather buy a bag of Pepperoni Rolls at the local gas station, a bottle of Diet Coke, and some chips! Still probably end up saving a buck . . .

Personally I’m usually disappointed when I go to Panera… soups are good but that’s about all. Everything else feels like a rip off. Rather spend my money at any other ‘fast food’ place
