A mighty fortress indeed. The great Lutheran hymn has never had so much meaning to me as in these horrifying days of plague, war and oppression in so many parts of this sad old world and with most of us feeling too powerless to oppose what is so very, very wrong. This is a wonderful symphony-so very grand in nature. This orchestra performs so well under this vital conductor. Thank you very much for the download.
And I'm back, for the 7th or 8th time. And Mendelssohn's 5th is better each time I listen. If ever there was a conductor who brought music to life, it is Orozco-Estrada. He brings it to life because he's LIVING it: the music incarnate! Living it with sheer delight and joy and awe at its transcendent mystery. And he brings the orchestra along with him! How I wish I could travel to Frankfurt and experience this miracle live! Yet another standing ovation from Japan! ¡¡Infinitas gracias, maestro Orozco-Estrada, a usted y a su magnífica orquestra!!
Vielen, vielen Dank an alle Mitwirkenden (auch diejenigen im Hintergrund) an dieser genialen Sinfonie, die ich schon lange tief ins Herz geschlossen habe!
Mendelssohn: 5. Sinfonie (Reformation. - Sinfonie orchester - Andres Orozco-Estrada. They know how to make beautiful music. They are such a talented orchestra together with Conductor Andres Orozco-Estrada. Absolutely enjoyed listening to this music. Thank You very much.
7 years ago, hr-Sinfonieorchester released a recording of this symphony with some of the same musicians, and I found it to be absolutely charming--especially the chorale at the end. Seeing this recording today with the aged musicians and Orozco-Estrada's charismatic conducting was truly touching. This recording also brings out many subtleties of Mendelssohn's music that were more difficult to notice in the recording seven years prior. Bravo and congratulations to this wonderful orchestra and to Mr. Orozco-Estrada!
What a gift to music lovers! This orchestra plays so well. I've appreciated their performances under guest conductors, including Marek Janowski and the late Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony must surely be considered one of the great ensembles in the world, as these video recordings testify.
Excellent performance. I'm still moved by Mendelssohn's music every time I hear it, though I've been hearing it for almost half a century. Even the Italian, Wedding March, and Spring Song, to this day move me.
My youth symphony orchestra played this on tour in China in the summer of 2019. It feels so nostalgic hearing this again and it brings back so many memories. Beautiful piece.
The hr-Sinfonieorchester has been a mainstay and fallback during this difficult pandemic period. How often have I listened and watched you perform, and you never failed to uplift me and give me also the courage to believe and to carry on. I am filled with admiration and gratitude (moved to tears actually at times) for your unwavering commitment to great music performed greatly despite all the difficulties that have beset you and all of us this past year and a half. STANDING OVATION FROM JAPAN!
I just adore those seconds of silence after the final bars.... Great symphony, Mendelssohn's Fifth. Really the fourth, because the "second' isn't a sympony. Or the second, chronologically. Unless you count the string symphonies, in which case it's the fifteenth. Or the third, only including the one fully (well, fulLER scored string symphony). Mendelssohn numerology never ceases to be fun.
This channel is by far my favorite classical music channel. With conductors like Orozco-Estrada and Järvi, a world class orchestra and top-notch engineering and presentation, I have yet to see a video that did not totally satisfy. Indeed, being able to enjoy all the music for free, and without ads, is a precious gift for which all classical music lovers should be grateful.
Wundervoll!
Mendelssohn would have surely loved this! Beautifully articulated and implemented performance, a sincere reading of the lyrical score. Excellent audio quality, too! Thanks a lot, once again!
I'm not really sure how Mendelssohn would take performances of this symphony. He had ample time to publish it, after all it is really his 2nd Symphony and not his 5th (not counting the String Symphonies). And he decided not to have it published, just like he never published his 3rd Symphony, the "Italian", even though he revised that one. He deemed it not worthy of being printed and wanted it destroyed, as he wrote in a letter in 1838, nine years after its premiere. The Mendelssohn catalogue is really a mess, caused by him being extremely self-critical and having died early. So many of his famous works were published after his death and without his final approval.
@@Quotenwagnerianer I have read that Mendelssohn was very disappointed in the first performance, mostly brought on by himself by not getting it ready in time for good rehearsing. If he hears this one, he will know that it's a great piece with a great spirit, I think.
Bravo! Excellent; wonderfully played. The flute solo at the beginning of the 4th movement is very interesting. First time I heard it - the other and older versions don’t include it.

Very grateful for this upload. I’ve always tended to underrate Mendelssohn even though I love his overture “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage”. Hearing this symphony again after many years has made me re assess my opinion, in the hands of a great orchestra and conductor it comes alive as a great work, thoroughly enjoyable😊
This is a beautiful performance. I would like to raise a question made by another commenter. In performances of this symphony that I have heard, the fourth movement begins with the flute playing Mendelssohn's distillation of the melody of A Mighty Fortress is Our God. In this performance that is preceded by an introductory passage, starting with an additional flute solo followed by another passage for the winds(principally), and only then does the solo rendition of A Mighty Fortress begin. Are these different versions by Mendelssohn? I know he tinkered with the score -- he was often dissatisfied with compositions when he finished them. Or is the introductory passage usually edited out in most performances?
