  • U.S. President Donald Trump says he's moving ahead with a plan to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products on February 1. It is unclear where oil will be excluded from the tariffs.

    1) End the oil discount and slap on an export tariff equivalent to what they're slapping us with.
    2) Impose as much border security as possible, to the point that it inconveniences and irritates any and all American travelers.
    3) Work out tax subsidies for Canadian products with the assurance that they will always cost less than their American piers.
    4) Add a 25% tax to all American products with viable Canadian alternatives.
    5) Break down all interprovincial trade barriers and reorient trade towards the global community.
    6) Invest in Canadian businesses and workers through grants and subsidies.
    7) Build out Canadian infrastructure and housing in order to modernize our economy and solve our cost of living crisis.
    8) Do the last three regardless of what America does - it's time to decouple and grow our economy.

If America wants to jam up Canada's economy, then there's going to be even less demand domestically for petroleum. I think we can survive. Midwestern agriculture cannot survive at the same rate and price range without cheap Canadian oil inputs and cheap Canadian Potash inputs, both of which are going to greatly increase in price. And before you say "but New Mexico has potash" they have a 400,000 ton a year output when America imports over 10,000,000 from us Canadians. So there is no replacement for that. Methinks a 50% export tariff on potash would cripple US agriculture, and I'd love to see it. We can easily do this, as we're also net energy exporters of every food group.

      The US is still the largest economy in the world. We export 130 billion a year to other nations around the world and the US 408 billion, with crude oil being 20 to 21% of that.
