    Carmine is really easy to propagate by seed and the seeds have omega-3 fatty acids, not something one usually considers when eating them.

    I tried making a jam out of them a week ago after realizing I had way too many haha. I cooked them for a few minutes with the seeds and then ran them through a hand crank food mill. I mixed some strawberries in because I had them. While I was doing the initial cook the goumi's almost jammed themselves. In the end it came out excellent! I'm really happy with that plant. It's so incredibly productive it's kinda mind blowing.

    I keep telling myself I need to put in one of these bushes sometime, just need to find a good spot for it. Currently our best berry bush is probably the bush cherry (just have Romeo and Juliet right now). Ours are 3rd year, fruiting nicely and about 5' tall, nearly as wide. I'd bet they'll be insanely productive next year and well over 6' tall. I'll probably have to start using insect netting to prevent the western cherry fly infestations that we can get. The nice thing with insect netting is birds can't get stuck in it like the bird netting. Worth considering to make that change.

    I’m going to try to find these available to purchase. Thanks for the video. One big reason I want them is because it’s a nitrogen fixer and has edible fruit as well.

      @@barbarasimoes9463 from what I have researched… some companies sell carmine as Tillamook but they are actually carmine.. honestly I don’t think there is enough out there about them nor is it easily available… I will say if I can find any variety at any point in time without being sold out ; I would choose carmine knowing that it’s confused or the same as Tillamook . I have only found one company that actually sells Tillamook variety and they are always sold out! I have a collection of plants in my food forest and I would love to add these as a nitrogen fixer instead of using my native invasive family member to this (the autumn olive).. I also plan to add some sea berry as well but I want certain varieties!

    A berry is a simple fruit arising from a single ovary.

    • @briangervais5962
      @briangervais5962 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The notable exception is that things containing a pit (drupes) are not berries. Interestingly enough, all other classifications beyond the very scientific simple v compound/aggregate, such as pepo [a fruit with a tougher rind (cucurbits)] are subclasses of berry, but for some reason drupes are not berries. Now don't get me started about how raspBERRIES are actually aggregate fruits containing many drupes.

      It might not be that they're the same, but similar in size to warrant growing either or. Red gem and Sweet Scarlet are a fourth of the size and not worth the time when these two are available.
