    Okaloosa Island native here, been living, working and surfing in Honolulu Hawaii for the past 30+ years. Planning on moving back home upon retirement in 2024. Nice to see the lineups are not too crowded back home.

    This is my favorite video that I have seen and I have been a subscriber over a year now. Congratulations for Tim Carr for making the over 50 years of surfing accomplishment. Panama City Beach has Marshall Arnold who is 73 years old and started surfing in the early 1960's. He can still surf good too! I would like to meet you one day Joe!

      Thanks Robert I really appreciate it. Some are definitely better than others. I’ve been thinking about making a video like this for quite some time and finally took action. Was almost a month in the making. Wife and I were over at St. Andrew State Park last weekend. Beautiful area. I surfed out there in the 90’s during Hurricane Hugo I think it was. Best waves I’ve ever surfed in Florida. Anyway, thanks for watching and hope to see ya in the water!!

    Finally leaving Texas to he where I should have grown up and been born lol. I ran across your channel and was pretty leery at first about surfing the pan handle areas, but now It seems like a good fit. I worked for several years out of Florida so I could go surf, bit Cocoa and Daytona where always tue most recommended. At 43 and both kids recently graduated, we have been scouting land for years to be away from all the noise and neighborhoods we have had to adapt to since Texas is growing. I have found that an hr or so out of town is quieter than anywhere further south, so Im glad that I stumbled across your videos. It has definitely opened my eyes a bit more. Most people in Texas and neighboring states feel that heading to Pensacola or Ft Walton is far enough when you have kids, and I feared the crowds. But then I realized I would live there year round and I would have opportunities to mingle with people and then be able to decompress and relax not to far from where I love to be.. Thank you again🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼

      Hey bro! Thanks for sharing your story! Glad the videos could be of some help besides entertainment. Just trying to live life, make a living and catch a few waves in the process. I think you're right about the west swell bringing the muddy water from the Mississippi taking away from that clear water, whereas anything east doesn't have that effect.
    That powdery white sand seemed at stretch to Mexico beach to the point at cape san blas. I took the ride out to St George Island and by then the sand was more a mixture with a bit more of the darker mudier color that extends around the big bend till you get to the first barrier sland of Anclote off of pasco/Pinellas County where the sand returns to fine sugar sand and the first rideable spot; and most beaches down through manatee and satasota counties dotted with beaches of thick shell and thick grit sand beaches.
    When I stayed in destin last June every day there was a straight west wind blowing from Louisiana. The water was murkier than normal for sure.
    What I couldn't believe is how a 1' + wave would bend in with just that short distance of fetch so I was all over it. On my way back I went to st andrews and that little west wind created 1-3 + waves breaking up against the jetty.
    Just like you said that bend facing more westerly really affected the waves.
    Just wanted to point out, I also went up to New smyrna/Daytona 2 weeks ago for that good super late season northeast swell, Brevard a month before and I'll take a good day in the panhandle over both areas on the eastcoast as many times as I've been there.
    I'm hoping for a late summer strike mission to the Emerald Coast. It's just such a long drive. 😀

    • @Surferjoefwb
      @Surferjoefwb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I’ve always liked exploring the Florida coast. Lots of miles. Never surfed over in the Sarasota area. East coast has some good consistent waves but nothing like the emerald green water of the Florida panhandle when all the elements come together!

    • @jonnyhawt8973
      @jonnyhawt8973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Surferjoefwb Exactly! When it all comes together nothing compares to our Florida Gulfcoast.
      The days we get make it all that more special when it happens.

    I was surfing thru the comments, Did anyone mention INTERLIGHT Surfshop? As I recall the Owner or the Man behind the scene was a local semi-pro surfer and that store was it at the foot of Brookes Bridge for many years. That was my goto place during time off from USAF duty limiting my time spent in the water BUT did allow me to surf several (off the continent) places from the Far East to Boca Chica, twice at JACO BEACH in Costa. I think his name is Yancey? Help a Grandpa out if you remember, thanks!
    Sixty and still gettin wet, check it 😁🤙🏼

    • @Surferjoefwb
      @Surferjoefwb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup you are correct! Innerlight(based in Pensacola) used to have a franchise located at the foot of Brooks Bridge. Then moved to Publix shopping center, then back across the street into a 2 story building by the bridge. Innerlight was owned by Yancey Spencer III who unfortunately passed back in 2011. I bought my very first board from there around 1985 and although it was owned by Yancey, that franchise was actually run by Tim Carr who owns Fluid Surf Shop today and was mentioned in my video. Innerlight still has several shops in the area including Destin and Pensacola. Innerlight pulled out of Ft Walton Bch mid 90’s if remember correctly. Thanks for watching and reminding me of some good memories!! Keep getting wet!! 😎🤙🏼

    I’m a local from Pensacola lookin to get into surfing. What type of board do you suggest to get started. Love the videos

    • @Surferjoefwb
      @Surferjoefwb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Matt thanks for watching!! Yeah if you’re just getting started i recommend getting a longer board like 7-8’. On a longer board it’s easier to catch waves and stand up. Also you can ride a lot smaller waves, like knee to waist high and that’s the size you want when learning. Wave Bandits makes some really nice “soft top” surfboards in that size and they’re great for surfers of all levels. And you can pick one up at your local surf shop like innerlight or waterboyz for around $300 so it won’t break the bank either. Good luck!! Surfing is the source 😎🤙🏼

    moving here soon how often do you surf in the winter, fall, springs and summer?

      Sweet bro thanks for watching!! I’m actually in Jacksonville right now catching some surf from Hurricane Lee. Be on the lookout for video. Definitely more waves in FWB during the winter. Rarely go more than a few days without something to ride. Summertime can be a different story.

  • @taradead

    Spent every summer of my youth at Alabama point...was shin-high (or less) almost every day. That's the only place I've ever seen waves traveling perpendicular to the beach... seriously, 90 deg angle! Moved to California for consistency and size, but occasionally reminisce about the island vibe of that part of the gulf.

    • @Surferjoefwb
      @Surferjoefwb  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right on dude! That’s nuts about the 90 degree waves. I’ve surfed Alabama Point a time or 2. And California. Wish we had California waves and Florida water. Yeah we definitely get better surf here in winter time. Thanks for watching 🤙🏼

  • @jonnyhawt8973

    Free parking... i went over to brevard a few weeks ago for the first time in awhile and i just stopped to see what the waves were doing at the cocoa beach pier and they want 30 bucks to park there now!?

    • @Surferjoefwb
      @Surferjoefwb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Holy crap! That’s nuts. Destin is starting to charge anywhere from $5 to $20 at different places. But Fort Walton Beach hasn’t jumped on that bandwagon as of yet 🤞🏼🤞🏼

    • @jonnyhawt8973
      @jonnyhawt8973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @FWB Surf TV Its insane. Most every cut along the spacecoast used to be free but now they've got parking meters through an app for you to pay so they just bill you from your phone.
      It's good as of right now Fort Walton isn't extorting the people. We should always have free access to Our Beaches. I want my flawda local pass. 🤣

    Whatever happened to Fox Surfboards?

    • @Surferjoefwb
      @Surferjoefwb  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is what I found:
      I recently teamed up with Dave Friedank of Blue Earth and he now runs the glassing end of FOX Surfboards. Dave is a career, long time board builder with a lot of experience. He used to be one of my Team riders back in the Day and we have remained friends for many years. Needless to say we are both having a blast doing what we both love. Custom board building.
      So, stop by say hello and I’ll give you the tour. Keep us in mind for your next
      board.
      Thanks - John Parton
