The DMV by my old neighborhood was so bad that they had to install bulletproof glass at the counters. The sign on the west end of the parking lot would be vandalized, torn down, smashed into a metal ball, replaced, and the process would repeat. They had to hire more security guards as well. The other one had to put the employee parking inside of chain link frames so people wouldn’t trash the employees’ cars afterwards, because that was becoming a problem.
A person is waiting in line to receive a form, but they're uncertain of what to do. What do you do? A. Assist them after studying protocol B. Escort them to the proper place where they can get the help they need C. shoo them off to the last place they were 15 minutes ago, creating an endless cycle of confusion when they're taken to random lines and being shooed out of them D. Hand them a piece of paper telling them what exactly to do
What about that clip was actually Peter being an asshole? He was just doing his job and informing the guy what he needed to do to get the right form, the system is messed up, but not the employees.

I know the feeling. Everyone kept telling me that my birth certificate was fake and my third visit a clerk waved me over and said "they're all idiots and don't know anything about documents from out of state". I was done in under 5 mins after having ordered 2 official birth certificates that looked exactly like my first one.
I know this is a difficult thing to accept for people in the US or UK, but this is EXACTLY what identity cards are for. They are not an intrusion of your privacy. The card is simply an official document acknowledging that you are a citizen of that country and when you were born. Nothing on that card is information the government is not supposed to know already. It is not a communist way of tracking you and all of your secrets. No government organization has ever questioned my citizenship, my identity or my age. I find it very strange that there is so much resistance against such a card.
I bet the interview process is something along the lines of: “Do you absolutely hate everyone and will try your very best to do absolutely nothing for the duration of the job?” “Uh, yeah?” “You’re hired.”
Steve Harvey said it best: "I don't know what the qualifications of being a DMV employee is, but you can not like members of the human race, you must have an overall fd up dispostion about everything, you pretty much know you ain't sh--t and you want everybody else to feel it. Welcome to the DMV."
On my 16th birthday I went to go take the written test, waited in multiple lines for 3+ hours and ended up having to go home because I didn’t have an “official” copy of my birth certificate. They don’t take copies...
My first experience to the dmv was like to this. Except I brought my original birth certificate, their website said that was valid. Fucking lazy bitch said it wasn't and turned us away (after waiting damn near 7 hours). Came next week and oh magically it's valid.
One time I failed my written test because they added a bunch of color questions like "what color type of red is a stop sign". Btw apparently it's red 43 whatever that means

Yup. If you're not a slow, lazy slob when you start working there, then you'll be pressured to work slower by the other employees because you're making them look bad. They have no incentive to work faster, it's not like they get paid extra. Those places are always understaffed, there's a never-ending line of pissed off people waiting to be helped. I get why they work so slow, but it's still irritating. I'm more annoyed with the people in charge who look at that system and think "yes, this is working perfectly, no need to change anything."
They wouldn't take my tax return today, even though it had my social security number which they already had. I wasted two hours there for them not to take any of my documents.

They gave the employees at the local DMV the option of a 4 day or 5 day work week. The only catch was they had to meet the quota of the number of people normally served in a 5 day week if they chose the 4 day week. They also let them figure out how best to set up the system with the lines, etc. They are open mon-thurs and the line moves fast.

I remember when I had to go to my local Ministry of Transportation Office (basically the Canadian DMV) to write my drivers test when I was 16. I spent 5 hours waiting in line, half an hour waiting for the proctor to give me the test, and then the test took me less than 10 minutes to write. I guess all the time you spend waiting in line is to give you more incentive to pass the first time. The people working there weren't unpleasant to deal with, the problem was just that you had over a hundred people and only 3-4 employees to see them all.
DWSimmy People complain about long lineups but if they don't want long lineups then the gvt will have to hire more staff. To hire more staff taxes will have to be raised and then the public will complain about that. Catch 22 for the government.
Such an amazing strategy when you think about it: DMV Peter was near his breaktime, he wanted nothing to do with the customer in front of him as it could cut into his break. Get's the customer all riled up to justify him just walking away on break. "I don't have to take this customer's bad attitude!" - absolute genius!!
My mom once said "Going the DMV is like going to Disney World, the sooner you get there, the shorter the lines" That's why I always go there when they open lol
Such offices do not reward quick turnabouts or quick throughput like private companies do. They punish mistakes severely. This makes the workers very risk averse and puts absolute accuracy above any form of timely service.
I gotta say here in Ontario, Canada … we have these “one stop” Service Ontario locations, where you can get your Transportation Licensing & Health Cards done at convenient locations with weekend hours. I went to the DMV last month to pay for my tags and get this: they charge you for using a credit card. They charge you for mailing in a check. They even charge you a convenience fee if you wait in line and pay at the window with a human employee. The only way to not pay some fee is to go there to the DMV and walk up to the kiosk and pay with cash. But they don’t tell you that when you’re waiting in line
I'm guessing that if you do not pay in exact change they charge you a fee to make change that is equal to the amount of change they owe you... "Sir that will be $14.95 today... I see you are paying with a $20 bill instead of exact change so I will have to charge you a $5.95 change processing fee and here is your new license and zero change due. Thank you for visiting the DMV today!"
Weird, my state doesn’t do that. And I don’t go to the DMV, I go to the county tax collector’s office. If I go before lunch there’s usually no one else in there. If I mail in the renewal card they charge a mailing fee. But if I walk up and pay with my credit or debit card, there’s no fee.

Going after the DMV is the least bold thing on the show. Everybody dreads these kind of mandatory bureaucratic chores, so it's an easy target. Really everything else would be more controversial, and therefore bolder.
When I moved here (Delaware), the first thing I noticed was how great the DMV was. In and out really fast. License renewal and replacement at a kiosk, usually no waiting. Drive through on most other things. And if you just have a question, there is a person at the door that will answer it for you, little or no waiting. Arizona had me in line for 45 min just to ask a question, and Maryland had 15 windows, one open, and a line out the door. Everywhere I have been before here has been horrible.
Just happened to see this, two years in, but as a former Delawarian I can agree that the DMV was shocking in how fast they were. I remember dreading it because of the stereotypes on TV when I was younger but they were always efficient.
@@the-reclining-roleplayer yes, even little things are so much less of a problem. I forgot to renew my registration on my pick up. It was during Covid and they didn’t even charge any kind of fine. When it isn’t during Covid the fine is still only like 20 or $30.

If you think talking to staff at the DMV is bad, get a load of the people you have to stand in line with while you try to make your way to the front. It's almost like trying to find your personal space on a train in china.
Just like the Kentucky DMV that sent me home the other day when renewing my license to get a piece of mail with my name and address on it , Only to come back and them not even look at it.
Happened to me when I took my driver's test. Showed up in a rental car, waited 2 hours for the test, they didn't like that it was a rental, so my dad and I had to go and get his own car. Went back to the DMV, got a number. They never called my number so I had to get a new number. After 3-4 more hours of waiting, I drive up and show them all the paperwork, and the person that tested me didn't even look at it.
Pro tip: if you live in or near a big city, find the DMV closest to Chinatown and go there. The employees are required to speak Chinese so they're efficient and professional.
Government in general: you want something from them it takes forever to get it. But if they want something from you then God forbid you don't have it to them yesterday.
At the DMV here in Georgia it doesn't matter what they look like, you have a group of very confident employees who are buried under the demand of the job and also the fact that a lot of their coworkers., and I am talking the majority have lost their customer service skills and are just trying to get through the day. Some of them act like they just don't want to be there anymore and take it out not only on the customers but also on each other. It makes going to the DMV here feel like heart surgery without anesthesia
Appointment lines are the least busiest at the DMV. They cut the time you wait at the DMV. Also the DMV has a sign where the line states "Appointments" only.
I Florida in 2021, called to ask about paperwork, someone picked up, answered my questions, next day I got taxes, title, license, registration, and change of state on the same day, cost me a total of $400 for everything and took maybe 45 minutes. And I even got the metal plate handed to me directly. What a great state
I love how this is still 11 years later, completely 100% accurate. Nothing has changed. All of the workers clearly hate their jobs, and all of humanity as well. Everytime you go there, you might as well gear up for getting into at least 2 arguments unless you dont mind people walking over you and talking to you like you're a piece of garbage.
Government jobs can be a safe haven for the scum of society. Privately owned businesses will fire employees if they make the business look bad for things they say and do outside of the workplace because customers will stop doing business with that company. The same logic does not work on government agencies because they get their funding comes entirely from the taxpayer so whether you utilize their services or not it does not affect their income so they're not going to care to make it more convenient for you.
Don’t you just love being directed to stand in the wrong line - and, after 40mins or so, when you get to the head of that line, you’re told to stand at the end of an entirely different line? And the employees of (insert department name) wonder why Joe Public gets ‘snippy’.🤬

Rest talked caried chairs back and forth and talked to customers about how they should have went to scadulle appointment online.... I did go online and it took me 2 months to scadulle and another 2 months waiting for it. I do believe if all employees were working on customers, there would be no lines at all. And sad thing is there were people that were there for 6+ hours and I waisted 2 hours of my life sitting in line that was appointment only. I heard that on Saturdays, when they only do live line, they have line starting on Friday and people camp overnight to be able to be seen. And I won't be surprised at all if ther is only one person that does all the work while few other workers stand and talk about it. 👏👏👏

The only way to not pay some fee is to go there to the DMV and walk up to the kiosk and pay with cash. But they don’t tell you that when you’re waiting in line
Anything the government can do to milk you out of money, they are going to do.
Thanks I screencapped this and stored it for next time I go so that i remember to take your advice
