I'm that guy that still has Wheel of Fortune from playing in 1996. Sold my collection during 09 because I needed rent money (wish I didn't now with playsets of all the duallands, Mox Jet, chaos orb, several Juzam Djinns, etc) but still had a binder of commons from dark, legends, antiquities and revised. The wheel was in that binder. Just started playing commander and haven't even pulled it from my deck yet
I know you were trying to be really budget here, but professional face breaker is the way for substituting for dockside. It gets you treasures, but also a little value if you need it. It generates treasures on its own and doesn't require your Chainer to attack to get the treasures...
I had the Deflecting Swat learning moment literally yesterday. I had seen it in lists and in videos and I finally went to buy it and had quite the shock lol. Time to buy bolt bend!
warstorm surge is probably the enchantment thats got me the most wins in commander, I run it in nearly all my red decks and it just generates insane value every game it sticks. it was a sad day when I had to cut it for terror of the peaks in my dragon deck, but it still reigns supreme in a bunch of all my other decks. You want card advantage in red? this is how you get it.
Fun fact about guild artisan, if you have 2 commanders with partner, they both get the texts from backgrounds so you can make 4 treasures just for attacking the player with the highest life total 🤣

Regarding mana - yes you do get a lot of mana but at least in my playgroup, there's even more things to do with that mana. That said, I've found having mana sinks like Soothsaying really handy to have around to utilize any spare mana you got lying around. Lets you play the right cards at the right time and still use all your mana. Also real good with "Kruphix" cards - Wilderness Reclamation, Seedborn Muse, Bear Umbra, etc.
I like Verity circle because it also allows you to tap (for a lot of mana yes) another persons really scary card at will AND you get to draw another card. So your opponent untaps, and then you tap it so they can’t use it, and then get a card to help with the mana burn.
The funniest part about this to me is that Soothsaying isn't even just situationally better than top, if you have the deck manip tools (like fetches to shuffle, etc), or miracles/counterbalance/other stuff that cares about top of library, soothsaying's variability is often more useful on opportunity cost. I mean, you probably do play both in those types of decks. But 1: look at the top card is remarkably similar to top's 1: look at the top 3 in a surprising number of cases.
the power of scrying and sensei's divining top lies in the manipulation of your next draw.. looking at the top card and then doing nothing isn't really worth a mana lol
If we're considering other colors for heroic intervention, and flawless maneuver is too expensive, consider Surge of Salvation for W. It's half the mana cost of heroic intervention, and it gives ALL your stuff hexproof, so you can even stop a disenchant! It can stop blasphemous act and wreck combat math by stopping dmg from red and black sources at instant speed as a combat trick. It's not as consistent against wrath effects, but what can you do...
Also, if you want something cheaper than reforge the soul, wheel of fate is half the price of reforge the soul. The only two little downsides are that you can only suspend the card from your hand or cascade into the card
I think the more obscure cards you referenced are probably less popular because given the nature of the multiplayer format cards that create a boardstate are a lot more valuable than most instants and sorceries so most decks that aren't about spellslinging will have a hard time reliably utilizing them. And yeah 35 mana is green deck territory, but it's not unusual to see somebody burn through 12 or 15 mana on a turn when stuff that matters starts happening. That card that can dig for X is still probably too expensive to use though unless you have infinite mana and you're just looking for your wincon, although in that scenario it does look a lot better than the divining top and I'm definitely going to rewind for the card name so I can try to buy a copy lol
I have a handful of cards I treat as budget staples. but I'm always afraid to share them because most have only been printed once or twice and some are very old and I'm worried some "investor" jackass will ruin them with a buyout.

Don’t worry dev, all those staples will be bulk soon, just give it a few more years at the current release/reprint rate. If it’s expensive, WOTC will reprint it into the ground. Which is nice for those looking to pick up these staples. Cheers man
Commander playing is easy. Just make proxies. All you have to do is take those blank cards that come in the Token slot for double faced cards, and mark them accordingly..... that is all!
You can't replace any cards anymore because the format has been power creeped so, so, so hard the last few years that efficient plays are now absolutely mandatory. "Everything is an avengers level threat", or lose.
You dont need to apologize for repeating some other peoples content. I just like listening to you talk about magic more than basically anyone else...so repeat away Dev.
You lost me at Soothsaying, not only the card but the rationale. Soothsaying is not a combo piece.. and the options you have for like 5 mana are crazy town. Casually spending U5 to look at 5 cards is just terrible when you can spend 5UU for hardcasting into the story, or 2UU if someone has enough cards in Graveyard. You'd think it would be better if you argue over the course of multiple turns, like, i spend 5, then can do it again, but it's not, since you could just spend that 5 mana to cast the draws you just did from into the story. So 10U to see 10 deep if you had a fetch, vs potentially 4 to draw 4 cards.. fact or fiction, deep analysis (though this costs 6 to get 4 cards). Veritas circle which was mentioned earlier... does have some applicability if you want persistent value. If you still want to just dig 10 deep, play ancestral knowledge for 2 mana (or 3 mana if you don't have a way to draw a card right now). It's $2.
The annoying thing here is the implication that 'mana costs don't matter in commander' which is silly, bc even in less optimized playgroups you will have other cards that compete for playing that card or using that mana that way. Like, if you can't run top and want to look at the top of your library and you're in blue, try running Rivendell. It's $2-$3. But if you start to get to 40 billion mana where something is good, now you're competing against finishers. It's an off color comparison, but when you spend so much mana you could reanimate a hoarding broodlord. Or play an elder brain, or a combustible gear hulk... there are so many ways to use the mana we're talking about here... faerie mastermind, while $5 gives you a mana sink which isn't symmetrical and can draw 2 cards to 1 for each opponent. Or 3 in the right circumstance. If you're trying to nerf your deck, ok, I guess. But even if you stick to value town is just not great.

I think dreadhorde invasion is only $0.8 to $1.5 btw, I was looking at it recently for my Elas Il-kor deck.
i love midnight hunt... so many cool cards that do awesome things and theyre all perfectly balanced to be barely unplayable

I use "wail of the nim" as the black card to help against board wipes not to mention it can help keep 1 toughness creatures in control

Verity circle is quite fun with turnabout if a player is going wide. Upkeep tap all creatures they control, draw 10 for 4 mana

Besides Past in Flames I like using Hypersonic Dragon gives all your sorceries Flashback and has Haste, Flying for 5cmc Izzet :P
