    I hope as you further remove the dirt from the basement that you don't find that the original reason that it was filled with dirt was because the walls were collapsing so they filled it up with dirt to prevent the walls from collapsing hence that part of the house. I hope that's not the case but be prepared for it as you dig further down you might want to have some bracing supports on hand just in case.

    Omg, that's an Alladdin's cave!!! Even though the majority of the stuff is garbage but I hope you guys keep the tea pot, clean it up and place it somewhere as an ornament and memory of the excavation of your home. That would be a nice item to pass down to your future family.

      I find it amazing that you were able to purchase the farm, especially being so young. But having the souls of the older people. Having the knowledge to work and build fantastic buildings. Here in the USA, it is rare for people of your age to be able to purchase a home/farm. I love watching your videos as you work to make your home 🏡 ❤️ perfect. I find it amazing that this property has some major problems (water on fields) and you both work at solving problems with out feeling defeated and not giving up.

      I remember watching TH-cam videos on an apartment renovation in Moscow and they found at least as much garbage under their kitchen floor. Hundreds of empty bottles, at least two broken bicycles and lots of stuff I don't remember. Maybe garbage pickup is so sketchy there they simply decided to get rid of things the easy way?
      Oh, and come to think of it, I also remember a Spanish TH-camr building a retaining wall to get more flat space in his garden. After building the wall he backfilled with everything he could find, including steel shelving units and plenty of old tyres. So maybe we could ask him 😀

    Hey guys wouldn't be better to insulate building fundamentals🏡, add waterproof barrier and to Installing a Landscape Drain with weed barrier at least 50 cm plus tons of gravel around the house. Of course taking into the account groundwater levels🌊 in the area. However, if this its a huge problem i would dig deper retention pond 🏞in order to lover the level. Close to the house and choice the lowest point in land slope. Therefore, You would eleminate the moisture bildup💧 in around the house. The solution you propose is a temporary fix⏳ and in the end will cost a lot more. The water always finding the least resisntant path. I know this is a huge project but in the same time its a investment for years. Good luck🛠 Deivids & Despina.

    I don't know very much about it, but I have always heard that if you don't let the water come into the basement, it is going to creep up into the walls. Here in Norway, houses have drainage around the outside of the house, to avoid the water coming into the basement...

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, that depends on a few factors but I don't think in this case sealing the floor would make matters any worse, the walls are damp anyway. The only thing you can do to make water go up higher into the walls than it used to is by sealing wall surface that used to be exposed to the air, allowing moisture to evapourate. If you close that route, capillary action will take the moisture higher up. In this case there was no exposed wall surface, it was all covered by dirt that has the same moisture level as the walls.
      That being said, drainage around the foundations would help a whole lot.

    You two are the hardest workers. Water problem…..we have what they call sump pumps. How the are hooked up, I have no idea how it’s hooked up. I know a hole is made and a pump goes in it. When the water get so high, pump comes on and is pushed outside and away from house. Not sure how the water is collected in the hole. Ours runs a few times if it rains real hard. But we live in Colorado and it’s dry. You get more rain and May have to dig a trench and a French drain?

    If you use cement on the bricks, won't they crumble because the cement doesn't breath like the lime can. If they crumble the walls will fail.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not so much about the breathing, it's about movement. Cement is very hard and rigid, lime is more flexible. Mortar should always be slightly softer than the brick or stone (e.g. for granite cement is perfectly appropriate).

    You have the right idea you have to use humour in that situation David…it’s a lot of work so alternate it with everything else you do

    Maybe the glass blocks were originally the window?

      I think the barn had a few half-collapsed glass block windows.

    I was surprised about how relatively modern all that rubbish was. DVDs hardly go back centuries, plastic goods were also likely less than 50 years old. I wonder what inspired the previous residents to just dump such stuff in the cellar, surely there were normal rubbish collection services available. If not, it was usual to have some dump area outside the house in most places I have seen archaeologists work. No wonder you found the house needed so much work, it was clearly neglected in an almost aggressive way in the past. Dealing with horrible activities has to be taken in a light-hearted way, some people call if gallows humour. If you get too serious, then it can become upsetting and impossible to carry on the work.

    Are the bricks laid with mud/earth throughout the house? Is that a security risk?
