    I really appreciate that your videos take an approach that shows how you would construct geometry for the body you're trying to create, rather than demonstrating a particular FreeCAD tool and working from there.

    17:40 - don't remember values, name them! All constraints can be named, and then referred to by paths like Sketch001.Constraints.StrideX. And that applies to all sorts of fields; for example, (Occurrences - 1) * Sketch001.Constraints.StrideX is a perfectly valid formula for the LinearPattern.Length field.
    Two little flaws of FreeCAD's UI though; the formula isn't properly recalculated inside the MultiTransform editor (that's why we have mark to recompute and recompute commands, to sort such misses out), and the constraint value editor turns reference mode off for constraints.
    Another tiny tip: if you select a point before hitting Shift+H or Shift+V to constrain it, you don't need to also select the origin, it's done by default.

    These videos are awesome. Curious: @1:50 the Edge Import Tool isn't working per your instruction. My previous sketch appears as a dotted line and the end points aren't selectable. What does a a dotted line mean?
    Btw, would you mind sharing how you customized your UI? I started with with the dark theme but can't locate how to change the font colors. You have legible white fonts, as where mine reflects the dark soul of the unspoken one. Even with my reading glasses on.

    What a magnificent tutorial! Thank you.
    Do you use any special FreeCAD version?
    Because at my computer multitransform feature is so slow, it's painful to use. Whenever I add second axis it requires 30-50 seconds to recalculate every time I change a thing.
    I've searched internet and I found that I'm not only one with this issue but I see yours working very fast. I do have quite fast computer (Ryzen 5 3600 + 32 GB RAM) with Ubuntu 18.04LTS + FreeCAD 0.18.4.

    Your tutorials are fantastic! For some reason freecad complains when I try to apply a horizontal or vertical constraints to 2 points as you are doing in several of your tutorials. It says that it needs a line segment for this constraint or something like that. Do you have an idea why?
    I'm using freecad version 0.18 on Windows.

    I wonder if (at 7:02) it would be possible to select all lines and arcs, then duplicate and scale down, in order to avoid drawing it all manually ?
    Another question - do you think it's possible to draw a gear, say with 40 teeth, then change the number of teeth easily (by just specifying one number), so you get a 64 teeth or 36 teeth gear ?
    (I know it's possible in something like OpenSCAD where you're writing a program to create the actual model, but it looks to me like FreeCAD might be sophisticated enough to enable you to do this).
    For comparison, I can use the rotation-tool in SketchUp with a component and then use the 'divide' feature, but this means you'll have to start from a single tooth each time, plus the teeth won't automatically 'resize'.

    • @JokoEngineeringhelp
      @JokoEngineeringhelp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey 68HC060; I am not aware of offsetting a sketch being a thing in FreeCAD yet (always learning) but that would be a fantastic tool. For the gear teeth, I recommend making a solid and extruding one tooth. Then do a circular pattern to determine the number of teeth. You could even link spreadsheet equations to the dimensions so the diameter of the gear updates with the number of teeth. Good luck!

  • @federicolopezbervejillo7995

    I want to thank you, I'm really learning fast with your tutorials. When you scaled the larger body by 0.95 at time stamp 26:09 you said that this gives a consistent thickness. I think that's not the case, for example if you have a long and narrow prism the 0.95 factor will result in a thicker wall on the end walls and thinner on the sides. So this workaround is not parametric as you said but also is not the same as a consistent thickness shell. Right?

    • @JokoEngineeringhelp
      @JokoEngineeringhelp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I wasn't very clear. You're right, and that's one reason why I don't like doing it. Bosses off axis wont be aligned, etc. If you look at my grabCAD you can download a version where the thickness command worked, but it didn't work doing the video which was also frustrating.

    • @federicolopezbervejillo7995
      @federicolopezbervejillo7995 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JokoEngineeringhelp It would be nice to know the reason why the procedure crashes, perhaps acute angles, or less than thickness radii?

    Can you show how to make an aerodynamic model rocket fin? One which has a blade-like edge, and is thicker towards the base for better strength. It would be easy for me to just make it out of straight lines, but I would like one made from curved shapes. What you did in this video looks like what you would have to do for a fin. To be clear, I'm taking about a highly advanced fin, one which has a unique curved silhouette from every axis plane, if that makes sense.

      @@JokoEngineeringhelp I was trying to find a good image but no luck. I found this one, which illustrates the shape on the XZ plane. "Version 1" is what I mean. cdn.instructables.com/FHO/ZXZV/HE07PPOU/FHOZXZVHE07PPOU.LARGE.jpg
      Then, in addition to that shape, not just a bevel along the edge, but a _sharp_ edge.
      THEN, on the XY plane, the base looks like an isosceles triangle, the sides of which curve inward, with a sharper angle towards the base (so it's wider where it attaches to the rocket) for light-weight, aerodynamic structural integrity.
      I guess you probably have already covered a lot of this just in other videos so could you maybe point me in the direction of something that could teach me how to do this? Thanks :)
