My fat PS2 is broken and it has been for many years now. I just can't bring myself to throw it away and I keep telling myself I'm going to get it fixed some time.....lol
They’re are always retro gaming shops that 🏬 can fix them for you except a lot of these shops are kinda running out of business mainly cost to pay rent to keep the place running sadly across the U.S. but don’t give up they still do exist in some states only thing is it seems they might charge a lot to get them fixed I think I can’t remember but yeah if you have the money saved up you should probably get it fixed and save the awesome beast of a console that is whichever ones you have!
The last game generation that wasn’t carried by online. Sure we were weird for being fans of games back then. But the kind of games you played then were so UNIQUE!
Back in the days of couch co-op where you had to actually be over at friends house in order to play games. This actually made friendships so much stronger than current day where friends are oftentimes just a familiar voice but nothing more than that.
@@KEKW-lc4xi its why gaming got popular in the first place. first game/s were 2 player multiplayer, then 1player but since arcades were filled it was multiplayer enough, but 1 player. then mario on console 1 player, started story games or maybe totaly new gameplay compared to previous arcade games is the right word then snes started co op on console. gaming is just a fun thing, you still have people who say they got a freind group and they hang out and play co op multiplayer offline, but like now yeah many play over discord i guess
I have a ps2 with the HDD and network adapter installed and FMB. Had it for years. 2TB drive, 680 disks loaded onto it, and i have a 1TB thumb drive rhe console reads region locked games off of. Best. Console. Ever.
When I played PS2 games It was on the PS2 slim. It's strange that you learn something new about old things everyday. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video.
The PS2 was the first console I experience emulation of NES and SNES games in college, because students modded the hard drive to run ROMs, my friends and I played Super Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Country, also Capcom fighting games directly booted from the hard drive.
I have 2 original fat ps2 with 1tb hdd and a second one with 250gb hdd. Both have fmcb memory cards and opl installed. I also can play ps2 games on my Steam Deck and Rog Ally X. Good times to be a gamer, we can enjoy all old and new games.
the Gamestar is a SATA adapter, but no network feature. And YES there are still PS2 custom servers around to play online on in many games. So if you still want network compatibility with a SATA hard drive or SSD, you need a SATA kit for the network adapter, which convert the IDE (the old standard) to SATA. Also personally i use Grimdoomer's latest OPL 1.2.0Beta. Why? Because it's compatible with exFAT-formatted drives, which make it SUPER SIMPLE to transfer and manage games on the hard drive (with OPL Manager) before putting it back in your PS2. No more crappy proprietary Linux formatted drives that your computer can't read without a special software that makes it stupidly clunky. Also, personally i use a SSD in my fat PS2, with a custom-made cardboard bracket because i'm very unsatisfied on how the 3d-printed brackets are holding the drive inside the slot. (often just sticking up inside which isn't good for the SATA connectors on both the adapter and the drive in the long run). Also, another info, when you buy a memory card with FreeMcBoot on it, or if you install it yourself on your memory card, it will be OPL v1.1.0, not the newer v1.2.0Beta builds. So that's technical here on how to replace the v1.1.0 on the memory card for a newer version. you might need a knowledgeable person to do it for you, or you could maybe follow a good tutorial online...if there is one about that specific task, but i would be surprised. I found that v1.2.0Beta have slightly faster loadings. Oh yeah, and many games may need different "modes" to be enabled, i have no idea why, but it's a thing on PS2, so you gotta dig onlinne to find that list on what to do for your games, what work and what doesn't. I stumbled on a game that just freeze when trying to save on a virtual memory card (yes that's a thing with OPL, creating a "VMC" to save yourself from buying tons of different memory cards for your countless games on your hard drive 😆
Great info 👍. Also, I recommend the Bitfunx IDE to SATA conversion board to maintain network functionality. There's a V2 board now, but I don't know what the difference is 🤷♂️
What I always found so fascinating about online play for the PS2 is that the online experience almost feels like an entirely different game for some games. Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six come to mind, packed with a whole different UI.
My ps2, the first dvd player and game console. I used it as a cash holder and that was it till I got one recently, the use of a hdd and freemcboot has been amazing when dying lasers are all to common these days to allow amazing games to be booted from hdd. Never played online ps2 but am glad I got one from Japan that I’m still using till today.
In 2003 I used to play NFS Underground online. Now I upgraded to a generic HDD controller (for better speed) and use OPL. My suggestion is if you intend to use both OPL and the network adapter, install it yourself rather than using the preloaded.
Another awesome video discussion. Small note to add on: Some FreeMcBoot cards come with installers which can actually install FHDB on your HDD if you have one plugged in. And while the interface is typically IDE, you can buy a modified adapter with SATA instead, or mod an existing one to have SATA. The max limit at this time is 2TB. Minor hangup but... I can't help but cringe a bit on your pronunciation of "Linux". I don't know if the Brits pronounce it differently, but everyone I am fairly certain it's pronounced "LIN" + "uhks". Otherwise, good stuff :)
LOL, don't bet on that, I repaired so many of those things back in the day for various reasons, I will say this though, it is much easier to replace the laser on these than on the other PS2's but for my experience most of my repairs ended up with the lasers in a draw for spare parts since they were not the parts broken.
oh I need this, I used to repair consoles for a local gaming shop. and one of the most replaced parts on the PS2 for me was the Disk Drive. and now, in my old age, and long out of that work, I find my old consoles failing and the parts so hard to get that I have almost given up on them. but after the revival of the Full sized Commodore 64 and the now epic wave of other legacy units joining the sea of Retro Gaming, I see hope to keep it alive long enough for my youngest (10) child to get into gaming on all levels, he loves mincraft of course and he loves my C64 (Modern) and he loves watching me rig up emulators on my PC to run old computers and consoles, so this would add one more platform to the list, He was able to enjoy the XBOX 360 until they killed it off, so when someone makes that one unlocked from the vault of defunct he will love that too (he has minecraft on it of course so it still has use, though it's disk drive is failing) I just bought my wife a PS2, not realising the "Phat" PS2 could be enhanced so easily, so I got her a Slim PS2, I think I will need to spend more money. lol
Been playing quite a lot with my PS1 and PS2 recently while also trying to get games that interested me in the past or interest now. I know many say that it is because of nostalgia that one tends to like older games than newer but I don't think so in my case because I get my nostalgia mostly from movies and shows. Older games just don't make me as tired when playing 1 hour or more which I believe is because of simpler graphics and time needed for game to advance. There have been few pleasant surprising new games that I've liked -> Baldur's Gate 3, indie games. For some reason it is a little bit harder to start playing on PC because there is not much physical actions to start gaming. For some reason it just turns my gaming brain on better when I take disc from case and put into the console then power up the console and hear the bootup screen.
Marcus here again. I'm just getting into the free mcboot scean. I bought an adapter that you can add a solid state drive. To the PS2 and I plan on putting all my physical games on that solid state drive. Haven't played the old PS2 in about 3 years so this will be new for me. I still say you look better without the lipstick. :-) I wish my girlfriend was still alive so I can show her this new type of a thing for the PS2.
Glad you started talking about FMCB. Been using it for a few years and I love it. The great thing is some games are still active online thanks to private servers. I played the original Star Wars Battlefront 2, SOCOM 2, and Monster Hunter online with it earlier this year. If you REALLY know how to mod it properly, you can play (some) PS1 games on it. Thankfully, modding a PS3 to play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games is the better option. Having your old games play on an HDMI is top tier!
The PS2 has been the Holy Grail of my childhood whenever I want to play games like Spider-Man, Midnight Club, GTA, Transformers and The Simpsons: Hit & Run.
Hard drive upgrade to the PS2 was hands down the best upgrade/modding I've ever done to any gaming equipment. Just booting up FFX in roughly 30 sec instead of minutes do tell what it does. A short warning for those of you who got your hands of one of the original ones, that isn't SATA but IDE/PATA. Check if your intended HDD matches the IDE and power connectors inside the adapter, not all HDD has the same width at their interfaces. Now I only which these smart dudes and dudies manage to crack OPL? For PS1 game to work better, yes most games boot up, but FF7 for example is quite black during fights... ;) Cheers: Sweden out.
Uh, PlayStation Central? It's kinda in the name - even written on a lot of the game boxes... Y'know, the precursor to PSN? FYI it was the "central hub" of PS2 Online - whilst not as overflowing with options or functionality compared to PSN or XBLive, it was essential for online play, sending messages between players/voice chat and getting patches and other downloadable content for games like Final Fantasy, Tony Hawks, SOCOM etc. We were gaming on the web-waves on PS2 for some time before XBox Live stabilised into something really usable, even on the Dreamcast before that too.
My launch Japanese unit has the small slot so no space for an internal HDD. My UK PS2 has had a harddrive and network adapter ever since I was in the online beta for Sony. So, as always Japanese has tidy and neat slos. While westerners have big holes.
Lol, I need to drag out my ps2 now. I would probably make the old thing explode though. Throwing some emulators on that would be fun. I am also afraid of other uninvited things who might have made it their home.
I bought Xbox rather than PS2 specifically because it was more exciting. Back then, Microsoft hadn't figured out how to rip us off with peripherals. The network port and Hard Drive came standard and was integral to the OS and storing save points. PS2 felt like Sega consoles: let's just add-hoc peripherals to meet specific demands. Xbox felt like a computer gaming console designed to run PC games. Being able to play Soldier of Fortune II was my main buying point. Meanwhile, the death of Singeltrac left me without a proper Warhawk or Twisted Metal reason to buy the Sony alternative. I never bought PS3 either because only the MGS4 special edition was backwards compatible. I ended up waiting till PS3 slim before buying one and only so I could play Gradius V and Contra Shattered Soldier.
One thing is certain for all of this: The more new discoveries these consoles and specific versions have, the more scalpers will hijack the prices in every seller or bidding store that's possible.
4:08 Is Linux pronounced differently in the UK than the US or does she just not know how to pronounce Linux? In the US we say it (len-knucs) That is the best I can do to sound it out.

The PS2 was a necessity for gracious living.
I can still hear the disc tray open/closing noise.🧐🤣
My fat PS2 is broken and it has been for many years now. I just can't bring myself to throw it away and I keep telling myself I'm going to get it fixed some time.....lol
As long as a memory card slot works and it turns on, you can play any game with this hack.
Same😂
I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking it's the power supply in my case.
Same
Back around 2005, I got a half ounce stuck in mine so bad that I had to take it apart to get it out lol
LMAO everybody was using it so much even the cops started catching on, now we can just hide it somewhere inside our gaming pc.
These days with a OPL update you can slot in a 16tb HDD in there.
Back in 2006, I used HD Loader to play pirated PS2 games stored on the HDD in the expansion slot. I'm surprised more people weren't doing it
I still have mine WITH that adapter!! Twas a necessity for gracious living, and to get my mug on my custom skater in THPS2, and beyond!
I have a ps2 with the HDD and network adapter installed and FMB. Had it for years. 2TB drive, 680 disks loaded onto it, and i have a 1TB thumb drive rhe console reads region locked games off of.
Best.
Console.
Ever.
I still play my PS2 to this day.
Shadow of the Colossus and Vice City are must haves for this console.
When I played PS2 games It was on the PS2 slim. It's strange that you learn something new about old things everyday. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video.
I still have my PS2 slim, as well as the DVD remote for it.
@@greenmachine5487 I hope you still got the games that you enjoy playing on it.
I've had a 120GB HD living in that slot since I installed DMS4 Pro modchip.
There's a V2 board now, but I don't know what the difference is 🤷♂️
i played final fantasy 11 for 10 years, i also had an hd loader that let me write rented games to the hard drive so i didnt need the disc
"Lyn-x"
11:06 The PS2 being violated 😅❤
It just changed it? She makes out it just happened. This happened like 20 years ago.
Was going to say this. Literally was doing this 20 years ago. Played San Andreas before it even hit retail.
we all been experimenting for decades on that sucker!
What I always found so fascinating about online play for the PS2 is that the online experience almost feels like an entirely different game for some games. Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six come to mind, packed with a whole different UI.
The ps2 slim 70000 and 90000 models they got network adapters
Alluring slots, they always keep me coming back.
Did this with my PS2 about a year ago. Old news.
No, Lady Decade I just enjoy your humor and passion. As I have stated before I don’t play these sorts of video games 🎮.
I use to this day. Play a lot of PS2 games using HDD. I also play PS1 games using Popstarter and Hugopocked fixes.
suddenly? this revelation has been around atleast 15 years
In 2003 I used to play NFS Underground online. Now I upgraded to a generic HDD controller (for better speed) and use OPL. My suggestion is if you intend to use both OPL and the network adapter, install it yourself rather than using the preloaded.
I remember PlayStation 2 game ❤🎉😊
Hearing you call linux like that send me into a hacker rage never seen before 😅
It makes more sense though being the creator was named Linus
@mikeg2491 I know that but nobody around the world calls it that only thus random TH-camr lol
@@darrenstone3406 drives me insane there isn't an e in Linux
I remember paying area 51 online and RE outbreak on ps2. I miss 2006 so much bros
The Linux unit with external HDD was only for Japanese versions of the PS2
No, it's still "LINNUCKS" here in the UK. She's mispronouncing it.
They call it that nerdy os here 😁
Get a slim with the manual lid to load discs, one less thing to break.
LOL, don't bet on that, I repaired so many of those things back in the day for various reasons, I will say this though, it is much easier to replace the laser on these than on the other PS2's but for my experience most of my repairs ended up with the lasers in a draw for spare parts since they were not the parts broken.
Need for speed underground also had online functions.
Hadn't heard you say something was a necessity for gracious living in a while. Glad that you're still keeping us informed :)
oh I need this, I used to repair consoles for a local gaming shop. and one of the most replaced parts on the PS2 for me was the Disk Drive.
and now, in my old age, and long out of that work, I find my old consoles failing and the parts so hard to get that I have almost given up on them.
but after the revival of the Full sized Commodore 64 and the now epic wave of other legacy units joining the sea of Retro Gaming, I see hope to keep it alive long enough for my youngest (10) child to get into gaming on all levels, he loves mincraft of course and he loves my C64 (Modern)
and he loves watching me rig up emulators on my PC to run old computers and consoles, so this would add one more platform to the list,
He was able to enjoy the XBOX 360 until they killed it off, so when someone makes that one unlocked from the vault of defunct he will love that too (he has minecraft on it of course so it still has use, though it's disk drive is failing)
I just bought my wife a PS2, not realising the "Phat" PS2 could be enhanced so easily, so I got her a Slim PS2, I think I will need to spend more money.
Pssst. It's "Linnux" with a hard i, not "Lie-nux"
It's for storing £20 of weed, a 12.5g pouch of amber leaf, a pack of kingies and a clipper lighter
So much love for thps3 and 4 ❤ and the tekken music outro 🔥
Glad you started talking about FMCB. Been using it for a few years and I love it. The great thing is some games are still active online thanks to private servers. I played the original Star Wars Battlefront 2, SOCOM 2, and Monster Hunter online with it earlier this year.
If you REALLY know how to mod it properly, you can play (some) PS1 games on it. Thankfully, modding a PS3 to play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games is the better option. Having your old games play on an HDMI is top tier!
Sony only released Linux for PS2 and called it a "Entertainment System" in Europe so they didn't have to pay some video game tax Europe had
I need a guide or list of things I can buy in order to do this.
Wish they'd bring the PlayStation Ash Tray back.
Guys, do you have any idea why this video hypnotized me.
I love talking about SLOTS....on the PS2😂😂
The PS2 has been the Holy Grail of my childhood whenever I want to play games like Spider-Man, Midnight Club, GTA, Transformers and The Simpsons: Hit & Run.
The PS2 is still a legendary gaming console!
It just changed it...? Just.
Just.
"Mysterious slot" like ppl didn't know wtf it was for. 😂
For PS1 game to work better, yes most games boot up, but FF7 for example is quite black during fights... ;)
Cheers: Sweden out.
Great video lady decade!!

PLAYSTATION 2 MY SECOND LOVE OF MY LIFE... LATER THAN SUPER NINTENDO!
HAHAHAHAHA
Uh, PlayStation Central? It's kinda in the name - even written on a lot of the game boxes... Y'know, the precursor to PSN? FYI it was the "central hub" of PS2 Online - whilst not as overflowing with options or functionality compared to PSN or XBLive, it was essential for online play, sending messages between players/voice chat and getting patches and other downloadable content for games like Final Fantasy, Tony Hawks, SOCOM etc. We were gaming on the web-waves on PS2 for some time before XBox Live stabilised into something really usable, even on the Dreamcast before that too.
nowdays it is time to buy PS2 to install Linux for a job 🤣 somewhere on youtube there was a movie how Linux works on any console since upgraded PS1
The golden age of gaming.
It’s “Lin-Ux” not “Line-X” otherwise great job
Ps2 should be revived 😢
My launch Japanese unit has the small slot so no space for an internal HDD.
My UK PS2 has had a harddrive and network adapter ever since I was in the online beta for Sony.
So, as always Japanese has tidy and neat slos. While westerners have big holes.
That mysterious slot so you could shove Vana’diel in it , and I still have it.
Have to say Lady Decade's coverage on these devices is Legendary. I know she spends hrs on these videos and it's deeply appreciated ❤️💯
"Slot" such a dirty word.
Pretty sure that slot is hot.
Most PS2’s probably have a dirty slot these days
She wants to know what you put in your slot.😊
@@tinbanger66 my slots retired these days. It’s old and dusty and in storage. Not much request to see it these days. We still talking about the PS 2?
@@RACOONBACON hope so.😇
I use it for HDDOSD myself.
As long as the slot consents first.
Lol, I need to drag out my ps2 now. I would probably make the old thing explode though. Throwing some emulators on that would be fun. I am also afraid of other uninvited things who might have made it their home.
Gaming changed forever in the year 2000
I bought Xbox rather than PS2 specifically because it was more exciting.
Mmm you’re making me drool watching you in cosplay costumes btw thanks
One thing is certain for all of this: The more new discoveries these consoles and specific versions have, the more scalpers will hijack the prices in every seller or bidding store that's possible.
clean your PS2 LadyDecade Please , Love the content as always
She's a gaming historian, cut her some slack. Her's is cleaner than most fellow owners.
The PS2 is the King
Nintendo Switch is about to overtake it as top selling console.
My friend back around 2005 had a hard drive in his ps2 with a bunch of games. Nothing new 🤷♂️
Great 💯 Ps2 ❤❤

Is Linux pronounced Lionex in the UK?
No 😂
4:08 Is Linux pronounced differently in the UK than the US or does she just not know how to pronounce Linux? In the US we say it (len-knucs) That is the best I can do to sound it out.
No we don't... She is pronouncing it wrong

PS2 is the last real console- those that followed were basically just stripped-down gaming PCs.
360 and PS3 were definitely not anywhere even remotely close to gaming PC, that was the PS4 and Xbox one and beyond.
Lady Decade are you latina?
Nope, a caucasian/Indian Subcontinent mix.
Who cares about original hardware? You can emulate these games on your friggin phone if you want.
Well I love emulation but nothing beats having almost the entire ps2 library on a single hard drive with no emulation errors or glitches
