there are many youtubers that build impressive cars. there are many people in the world with a mini collection of cars and you are one of them. however, not everyone has a collection of cars that they can say are self built and not a lot of youtubers can say they built the whole car themselves. you are a man of many talents!
I wish people in the comments realize they are watching you build your car & not theirs. The paint choices look classy! Well done!
Great work Jeff - as a builder of cars I love watching others do great work like this. Thanks for taking the time to video everything and create content - it's not something that I could do.
Almost as fun is reading all the comments from Internet Experts 🤷♀😂
Wish I had the word “Ferrari” to display bold and proud under our hood but I guess I’ll just have to live vicariously through you Jeff! Looking forward to seeing this beast unmasked and rolling 💪💛
The Ferrari engine was not cheap, but not as expensive as you might think. MUCH cheaper than the engine in my old 911 ;)
That Plenum looks very professional Jeff !!
The combination of yellow and silver works so well on this car. I'd have been torn between leaving the smoothed plenums silver and adding the yellow
Love the silver lettering. Great little detail. And like heaps of others have said ignore the haters of the decision to paint it Ferrari Yellow. Looking great Jeff.
This is looking 100% better than I could imagine. You're a rockstar!
Looks great! That silver is a nice pop!
These videos are fantastic, such great lessons to just leave things be till the following day, so many times I forget to do that
Plenum looks great Jeff, nice work
Cant wait see that engine installed, the engine every Alfa 105 should have come with 👍🏼
Always an entertaining and informative episode. A great contrast (IMHO) to all the car shows that create the false sense of urgency, tension and drama . . . Thanks for keeping it real
Totally agree. Episodes such as this one highlight the level of effort and attention required to end up with a world-class custom car.
If you don’t like sanding then just wait for the blooper Princess 🙏
Love the process of the silver lettering which will look fantastic when we are finished
We are getting close
Well done Jeff
Looks great. I’m so glad you didn’t go for the wrinkle yellow on this build!
Ein herrliches KFZ,
Ein wunderbarer Umbau,
Sehr sehr schön. Weiter so!
Grüße aus Deutschland
Nice slow down 🤪 really coming together now!!!
Mrs.Jeff outtakes were great lol
Plenum looks great, I like the gloss and silver lettering. It’s more custom to the build. 👍
Great couple and awesome channel!!
You're a awesome painter Jeff
Good call on the call to stop and rest. Today i took a day off from the project that is biting me at the moment. A day of rest and recuperation and comeback in a better frame of mind.
I am loving the colour scheme. I would be making the same calls on colour choices. Congrats on the progress.
Taking a day off from the project sometimes is the best recipe, so you can come back refreshed and energised for another go.
Hands up, I was one commenting about sanding, but I think what youve done as your method looks awesome
Good work on the sponsor! I was just looking at getting a jumper pack and Project Farm rated the TopDon!
Clever, well done. I love it.
You guy's are an adorable couple.
Jeff knows all the tricks, how about a very light coating of vasaline on those letters before you blow the yellow on. Wipes rite off with little effort👍 This also works great for putting color down in machined script, just coat surrounding area, blow paint and wipe off. Painted many harley cylinders, cleaned edges of fins with rag and cleaner,,bruital, wore out many a rag back in my days working as a Harley factory tech. Love your videos, always a pleasure to watch. From Seattle
Can't wait to see this beast finished, so close now mate.
As usual another Great Vid and the dingle finger salute Mrs Jeff
Thanks for considering your subscribers Jeff...😂, the plenums look gorgeous!! Greetings from South-Africa!!🤗
Jeff!
Great method for the lettering. I haven't seen it done that way before. I'll probably try that on one of my projects.
Hi Jeff
The Ferrari Lettering turned out to be fantastic with your method.
Perfect yellow and silver matching 😲
I just love your work man. 🤩
Congratulations
Greetings from Portugal
The blank finnish looks so mich better than wrinkle!💪🏻
Great series! Started following a few months ago and amnow at the point where i wait for new episodes!
Great to see that you take the time not to rush the work just to get the episode complete! Keep it up! 😀
The valve cover looks "killer" !!! Very nice. It´s also good not to rush to let the paint cure 100%
The letters look fantastic!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic done Mr n Mrs Jeff 👍. Cheers guys
So there was some method to the madness re the plenum cover after all. Turned out great! Really liking this colour combo.
The bonnet torsion bars will be fine, my p76 has the same style and been painted since 1997 and still perfect ;)
I like that method for the lettering Jeff. I came up with a way of doing it the other way around, paint the main colour first then mask off the whole piece, put masking tape over the lettering and then sand through the tape which leaves the lettering perfectly masked, and then paint the letters after that. I think your way might give a neater result, will have to try it out.
Looking really nice !! Awesome job mate !
Jeff, a new HB t-shirt logo at 11:08 "It's what I do, I just mess it up" LOLOLOLOL
Haha. There are endless possibilities for my shirt designs :D
The yellow just looks better all the time🏆Remember Jeff if you get tired just stop.....😁
After the paint and bodywork, the real fun can start!! For the painting bolds I was thinking, maybe a layer off 2yk paint clear coat safe you the touch up, after bolting them. Maybe a heat resistant clear coat can protect the painting off the inlet, where it's screw to the engine it's gone a be hot. Nice job bay the way!
Very good job Jeff
That jump starter looks great. I’m gonna get one!
A red wrinkle finished plenum would have looked so good peeking out from that yellow hood. As long as you like the yellow is all that really matters in the end.
great stuff. i like the logo thinner rubbing trick.
Love the color combo! I don't think it will be the case, but if you get tired of the plenum color, it will be easy enough to redo as a wise man said "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing 2 times" :-)
I mess up...that’s what I do! 😂 But you do it so well ❤
Was wondering how you would do the lettering - neat trick! Liking the yellow more and more.
Thanks mate :D
G'day Jeff,
Awesome episode.
My 2 cents worth is your correct in walking away.
✌️ Peace.
Thanx for the upload 👍 loving it Jeff!
not to insult your sponsor, but have you seen/ tried the starter packs that are basically a big capacitor? The great thing about them is they don't have to be kept charged, so they are always ready. The usual dead battery still has some power left, but not the big jolt it takes to spin an engine. You hook up the capacitor pack and for 3 or 4 minutes it stores the power from your battery into it's capacitors. When it tells you it's full, you turn the key and it is able to then release that power instantly and, presto, your engine starts. Now if your battery has been sitting for a year and is completely dead, it won't work, or if it's a car you have to crank for a long time to start, that won't work either. Otherwise they are a brilliant piece of engineering that are always ready.
Good decision not rushing it, not worth the risk. 👍
it takes a wise man to stop and take stock, rather than end up doing things twice or more ! looks fab Jeff
I’m an old school panel beater and painter. Just a few comments. On the final rub back before your flow coat 1200 grit is the best grit. Also when you have to blend in a panel never mask a line on a panel
Looking awesome 👍🏽👍🏻
The torsion bar is normally painted colour of car .. it’s not going to crack , it will wear from rotating and rubbing with radiator support panel and it’s brackets.. . Don’t worry it’s nothing much .
Hope you were wearing rubber gloves 🧤 with the final flatting off (sanding as you call it) . The isocyanates in the clear coat is absorbed-through the skin especially when wet... Plus you can use a squeegee to see if rubbed flat without orange peel effects...
Happy to help , great job so far .!!
Like your t-shirt, Fun Facts with Mrs Jeff.
Jeff i hope you take this car to alfas museum one day
Great job with the colour!
That plenum looks so great, Jeff…subtle, custom and just right! By the way, Mrs. Jeff is an awfully good sport, and so much fun in every video. Thought of the colors of the Ukrainian Flag with her blue top and the yellow of the car…maybe not intended to be that way since she mentioned the flag of Sweden, but with so much worldwide support for Ukraine that’s what came to mind first. Keep up the great work!
besides thinners you can use some solvents that don''t leave residue behind , I use acetone works great
I have similar jump starter that also acts like a trickle charger, you can leave it on there to juice(charge) up your battery
Brilliant as always.
Grinding/sanding welds just beyond flat actually makes them less likely to crack. You remove the stress risers at the edges of the weld.
Looks great 👍
Nice way to get the logo silver again (and if it would be MINE - which it isn't - the plenum would be black wrinkled, like an old Colombo-engine... 😎).
Surprised it worked so well and that the clear coat isn't affected by the thinners?? is it because the rest of the paint is fresh? so it comes off while the dry clear coat can tolerate a quick pass with the thinners?
Thinners doesn't effect the 2 pack clear coat once it has set. It is a chemical reaction so once it has set it is pretty robust :D
I LOVE The Colours
Great work, looking good!
That engine cover thing (dunno what it's called, plenum or something?) looks so GOOD!!!
A nice Update Video Love it ❤️🌹❤️
building the car is a long proces, dont rush it to make content
Beautiful Mate..
In My days ad a painter , we used something called a softener for springs , ect.
It's not quite the end of winter there yet, right? Did you have any issues laying paint/clear with the ambient temps being lower than recommended? Did you take any steps to counter the temps like warming the car in the booth? Bringing the paint in the house the night before spraying to warm it? Or did it not really effect it that much?
It is mid spring here, so the temps are perfect for painting ;)
Love the channel, respect the huge skill set. But on a focal point like the plenum...maybe have a pro touch up those visible TIG welds?
Then it wouldn't be home built ;)
if its worth doing, its worth doing twice, somebody once said that
Love what you are doing yhe plenum looks awesome but as much as you say you don't want the Ronald MacDonald look . i still think the ferraris in red would have just given it a little homage to where it came from
Feel a little silly for suggesting that you sand the lettering now that i have seen your method. Nice touch - you must of learned a lot of cool tricks doing air brushing. My apologies..
An other great tutorial 👍
I thought you were going to leave the cam cover silver to flow with the silver accent lines. Looks fab regardless.
Hi watching your video .jump starting Porsche.Your negative lead moved when you tried to crank engine .watch it back . Yes your battery may be flat but that loose lead isn't going to help. Sorry for pointing this out .🤔
Interesting episode as you share some of the tricks of the trade. Whilst I would not go into painting a car, it is really very useful to understand what techniques are potentially available and what they involve.
In terms of the paint colour choices, it is good for a project to have some identity.
I am also intrigued by the torsion bar spring used by Alfa - could you possible indicate the diameter as i do not have an Alfa to hand!
They are around 5-6mm
@@HomeBuiltByJeff Thanks Jeff. I watch the show every week whilst doing the ironing ;-) I enjoy doing the ironing now!
Brilliant
One of the poles of your battery was moving when you krancked the engine on the Porche Boxter
Love the progress on the car. Love the plenum. It going to really stand out through the bonnet!!! How hard would it have been to chance Ferrari on the plenum to AlFerrari? Just asking!
Haha, that would have been good, but it would have been very hard to do ;)
Would powder coating the torsion bars been an option?
Jeff, enjoy your content Bud.
See the Jump Starter. I have a 997.1, would it be possible to open the bonnet with it prior to jumping the battery?? Thanks.
There is a way to pop the bonnet with a dead battery but I can't remember off the top of my head.
@@HomeBuiltByJeff I know how to by connecting 12v supply to post in fuse panel and earth, but wanted to know if gadget would do that bit....
Question Jeff. I know if something is worth doing it's worth doing twice, but why have you chosen not to do about 5 or 6 coats of yellow, & a few coats of silver, with a few coats of clear? Seems to me it's not enough coats.
I did, I just gloss over the multiple coats in the video as it is too repetitive.
Cool bananas @@HomeBuiltByJeff
The car is very yellow.
Will you get tinted windows so as not to dazzle yourself?
You didn't flow with the flares on?
Question about those Jump Starter packs. If it’s charged and left waiting “in case” it’s needed does it go flat over time and need recharging periodically and if yes then how often do you need to top it up?
It is lithium ion battery. I have had lithium ion batteries sitting for a couple of years and they still have a full charge.
I have 2 of these different brand but same thing. They do drop charge but 6 monthly top up does the trick. After a year one of mine still had half power.
@@HomeBuiltByJeff Thanks. Ordering mine right now.
@@andrewharris637 Thanks Andrew sounds great.
What was the battery pack you did an ad for once mate? Can’t find it.
Topdon
Ah sorry, meant the battery pack thing you did another post on?
the engine would rev and rev if the weld broke on the intake? wouldn't it just hit the rev limiter until you turn the key off? not great but not terrible either.
I would think that the Throttle Position Sensor would keep the engine from revving, assuming the engine has one.
Is there a method to your madness, or a madness to your methods?
Grasshopper
Only 2 colours for this car Jeff? Is age making you less adventurous these days than say, an orange Porsche with black and purple stripes down the middle and a purple tartan interior? The interior might have to have some brown in it to match the seats for the Alfararri, that'd be weird! I'm going to enjoy in episodes how you will incorporate colours from the outside in.
