I have sooooo many beds which is so hard to maintain everything so I started using rock mulch. Don’t have to mulch every year and the plants/trees do just fine. Looks great if you put a rock wall around it with the stone inside. It also helps if you’re in a windy area to keep your trees stabilized when their young.

Stones are great for maintaining moisture in the soil for long periods. They can be used in conjunction with wood/straw mulch, by either putting the organic mulch under the stones, or by keeping organic mulch inside a ring of stones. That way you have both advantages, and stone circles look great. We don't have stones in my area of Florida unless we buy them, but I use chunks of limbs from cut trees to circle the bushes. Inside the circle I used leaves, small twigs, and grass. Works like a charm.

I put lava rock down first all around the house after 10 years of that I decided to pull all that up and put down a rock with some pink in it. I made a big mistake by going with the larger Rock. So now I'm in the process of pulling all that up. Very much labor-intensive . And putting the same Stone down but just a lot smaller and easier to work with plus you get more for your money when you buy the smaller Stone. Ugh... Ill get it right one of these days. So if they offered two different sizes of the stone get the smaller stone.

So here’s a question: What happens if you use a base layer of bark (to shield the surface roots from the heat) but then you top coat with stone? Best of both worlds, or not advised? My plants are in pots.

I'm going through this right now. Our mulch is like a jungle within 48 hours of weeding it. We have bean stalk looking things climbing up the Internet and cable TV cable as well as crowding the HVAC compressors and propane line and septic alarm. Can't have that. I know that placing river rocks or stone will still allow some weeds, but they should not be as excessive as with mulch. The biggest reason for me doing it though is that our area has had many spontaneous combustion house fires that began in mulch beds next to the house. I don't want that. Plus, delivery drivers sometimes smoke when driving in and the mulch is a fire hazard from some idiot tossing a cigarette butt into our mulch beds.

I have mulch right now, but my dog digs into it so I am thinking about changing to rocks. However as you say, its not as good for the plants. hmm what to do.

I just moved into a house that has all stone mulch. How can I fertilize? Thinking about taking the stones out

volcano mulching is bad? How about volcano rock mulch? Available in reddish brown or black.
Volcano mulch is working wonders on my front bed. Trees are thriving. Guessing it's from the minerals from the volcanic rocks slowly leeching into the soil like how nature intended.

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like the porous nature of pumice also helps in retaining water because they act like a sponge.

@Michael Saxon - *rocks* are great for run-off and erosion control (notice how they're interspersed on highway slopes)

make sure you're careful what plants you use rock instead of mulch with, make sure the plant likes drought or is very drought tolerant, or the heat rock it can emit will cook the plant, i myself like rock better, it is cleaner, more controlled of weeds, and the rock has minerals in it that helps the plants be disease resistant than normal

This is interesting. Both of my sisters have converted to drought tolerant landscape using mulch. Now its my turn, having just had my turf removal plan approved for a slice of the rebate pie. Mulch can look good, but stone I feel lends a more dramatic effect. Thank you for the clip.
