Alive, if only barely, and comatose, with second degree burns over 50% of his front, his ribs reduced to gravel by comminuted fractures. The art of Kyokugen Karate had been sharpened for this very night in those mountains, honed as by a master polisher upon a series of the finest whetstones. Mr Karate was now merely testing the edge before the killing cut.
Mr Karate found Geese in his office at the top of the tower - alone, as he knew he would be. For all his cunning and ruthlessness, he knew well his former master's pride as a warrior. When a truly strong foe came for him, he would always meet him on equal terms, blade to blade. His confidence in his own abilities demanded no less. However, within the realm of individual combat, Geese would spurn no advantage, however unnatural or abominable. And so it was, that Mr Karate came upon Geeze Howard, not as he had known him previously, but swollen and marked by unnatural power of the foulest kind. His office had been repurposed as a profane shrine to dark powers. Mr Karate had long known of the kingpin's obssession with esoterica, and the promise of power it could bring. Indeed, he had been personally responsible for several occult acquisitions on Geese's behalf, back in the day. But what he found that night was orders of magnitude greater - demonised idols arranged according to deliberate inversions of sacred geometry, blood and human viscera heaped in brass offering bowls, written charms and prayer flags that seared the eyes and jarred the brain, and looped chants playing on the speaker system that blistered the ears and nauseated the soul. Geese himself - his flesh the colour and texture of a livid corpse, eyes filmed like a dead fish left to rot - was limned by an aureolus of pallid flame, wispy and grey, as though a cloak made of grave mists and spiderwebs, billowing in a cemetary breeze. Ephemeral whispers and phantom footsteps accompanied his every movement, as though an unseen host walked in his footsteps. Though the gravity of his situation was plain to see, Mr Karate was undaunted - his was a mind steeled from childhood by the discipline of Kyokugen, hardened and polished like unto the perfect vajra alluded to by ancient sages, that cut through the delusions and adversities of the world without blemish to itself. He had faced the unnatural before, and had not been turned. He would not turn now. Few words were exchanged as the fight began, and none of worth - for what was there left to say between these two that was not better said with fists? Back and forth the savage, bruising contest went, as the warring parties went at each other, fully intent on being the only man left breathing at the end. Geese left many marks upon Mr Karate that day - his grasp of range control and opportunistic counterattacks had never been better, in many ways, the direct counter to the relentless pressure and unyielding aggression of Kyokugen-ryu. Again and again, he caught Mr Karate by surprise, striking from unexpected angles with energy blasts, or countering perfectly-judged strikes with jarring, lightning-charged throws that would have shattered the bones of a lesser man and charred his flesh to charcoal. His every touch chilled like midwinter ice, and burned like hellfire, dulling the senses and stultifying movement. Against that, however, Mr Karate brought his family art of Kyokugen-ryu to bear - an ancient system of kempo, handed down from feudal times in Okinawa, unchanged from the days when its practitioners had to face armed and armoured samurai with naught but their bare hands. Polished to its utmost potential in the mountains, its true killing potential was now unleashed. Geese's phantasmal evasions were disrupted by sudden leaps and lunges that upset his judgement of range. Split-second changes of vector saw his tricky guards smashed back into his own body with splintered forearm bones. Several times, he chambered for what he thought would be a certain killing blow, only to be beaten to the punch by a perfectly-judged Kohou - the ultimate counter blow. Geese's one-time dominance of the energy projectile game crumbled before one blazing Haou Shoukou Ken after another - the most powerful energy blast in all of esoteric martial arts. More than once, massive volleys of combination strikes - Kyokugen's legendary Ryuko Ranbu - had Geese up against the ropes, the crime lord surviving only thanks to his own slipperiness, plus a little undeserved luck.
The bruising battle of attrition finally came to an end when Geese, riding a wave of confidence after a succession of counterthrows, misjudged his chances and overcommitted to a double Reppuken. This left him open for Mr Karate's aerial attack that stunned him for the endgame. A barrage of strikes ended with a Moukou Buraigan - a devastating thrust-punch delivered to the solar plexus that knocked the wind out of Geese. Mr Karate chambered and struck again into the opening with the same hand, crumpling Geese to his knees as his ribs and sternum shattered under a fist that struck like a cannon shell, carrying with it all the years of hatred and fear for his family's safety he had inflicted upon its owner. With his hated enemy bowed at his feet at last, there was only one thing left for Mr Karate to do - let the axe fall. Summoning every last ounce of his spiritual power built up over his year of austerity - and the decades of training prior to that - he poured into his final strike all of his hatred, all of his regret, and all of his love for his family, and for karate. This man had threatened his family, had used them as leverage to force him to commit acts that had stained his soul indelibly, and to aid and abet worser acts still. He was tainted for life - his gi was no longer white. But he could begin to atone for that bad karma now, with one final act of bloodshed that would free countless others from the shadow Geese had cast over South Town, and beyond. All at the low, low price of one man's already-debased soul. The air rippled and caught fire as Mr Karate's fighting spirit took shape - visible now even to the uninitiated - as a towering figure of power and fury. Kishin Sanga Geki - the executioner's blow, long forbidden by generations of Kyokugen masters, now unsealed for the dire need of this day. The finishing swordhand struck like a thunderbolt, not only smashing Geese into a bag of shattered bones, but cratering the reinforced concrete floor beneath his corpse. The aura of deathly power about him dissipated, writhing shadows evaporating like mist before the morning sun, sibilant whispers of alarm announcing the retreat of whatever abominable spirits had inhabited this place before the purity of a Kyokugen master's righteous fury. As police sirens split the night air, a burly figure paused in an alley, five blocks from Geese Tower. A bloodstained karate gi and wooden geta were disposed of in an unused hobo stove and set alight. The figure paused, looking at a lacquered tengu mask. The object had seen obvious hard and sinister use, being battered and bloodstained, but was of fine craftsmanship nonetheless. He *should* burn it. It was for the best, that he cut his final ties to the past and consign Mr Karate to the flames, so he could learn to be Sakazaki Takuma once again. The road back would be hard enough without his past reaching out to drag him back down and drown him in darkness. Reaching out, he held the mask over the flames, fingers already loosening to drop it in, and let the final vestige of his past dissipate into ashes... ...only to snatch it back at the last moment and tuck it within the trenchcoat he now wore. He would clean it thoroughly once he got home, and put it up in the restaurant - as a quirky cultural decoration, to the uninitiated, and a sober reminder, to those who knew. Besides... ~You will need me again,~ came the gravelly, merciless rasp of the executioner, now a voice in the darkest recesses of his mind, ~For the night is dark, and full of monsters - monsters that eat *children*.~ Takuma's jaw tightened, callused fists clenching till the bones creaked at the thought of his children in danger. In all the world, perhaps only he still saw them as helpless babes in arms, while literally everyone else saw them as formidable combatants in their own right. As their father, it was his right - his *duty* - to see them so. ~And the only way to put the monsters down for good, is to use a bigger monster.~ Takuma quickened his pace, moving swiftly but unhurriedly to a cafe he frequented, where he had already arranged his alibi with the owner and regulars beforehand, who would all swear upon their mothers' graves he had been there since late afternoon. ~We will meet again, Sakazaki Takuma.~
