Pretty sure the open call was for publicity. Sounds like Rachel was scouted out before they even started the open call. So they had clear front runners before they opened the role to the 30k people she was supposedly “up against”.
For anyone saying there’s no way 30,000 people auditioned: I was one of them! It was an open casting call and anyone slightly resembling the description signed onto any agency got the opportunity to turn in a self-taped audition. You could choose to audition as either Anita or Maria, had to sing a song and everything. I was just a girl in High School and I got to turn one in from South America, so I don’t doubt that everyone else who got the casting call turned in their self tapes too. Now obviously not all tapes even made it anywhere near the directors, but I wouldn’t doubt that 30,000 if not more people auditioned.

I don't doubt that Rachel Zegler got the role of Maria in the film over thousands of others. There was an open call for the film and thousands of people made tapes. Only the most promising and most suitable candidates would have got to do further tests for the film. Likely that only a small percentage of those thousands would have got a callback, there would have been no point doing further tests for the film with them if they weren't at all suitable and didn't have the skills and talent required. Rachel delivered and it's not surprising she has been cast in a number of other Hollywood films since then.

She’s not lying… I don’t know the actual numbers obviously but I made an audition tape for west side story too, and I was just a girl from south america who had just gotten signed onto an Agency. It was an open Casting call so anyone slightly fitting the description (and I mean slightly cause I don’t look Latino at all) got the opportunity to turn in a self tape audition and the script given was either the one from Maria or Anita. If i did it from South America, imagine how many others from all over the world turned in their auditions too. This was back in 2016 yet the movie didn’t come out till years later, so they did take their time to pick and choose the actors.

@@LaurenLaass I did, indeed, see the movie but this version of WSS just gave off that "Been there, done that" vibe. The overall populace has simply grown weary of these remakes, especially when accompanied by race/gender flips. Even tagging the Spielberg name recognition to it could not save it.
I said it before and I'll say it again, Zegler needs to branch out from copycat remakes and do something ORIGINAL if she ever wants to find a wide ranging fanbase.
