I'm in the middle of this book now. I'm of mixed minds of it. The ratio of corpses to mystery is a bit too high for my taste. It reads like a 30's gangster movie; it's a little hackneyed. Having said that, I mostly like it for the reasons the reviewer stated.

Dinah Brand is LITERALLY a "brand." Think about it. And not a coincidence that what starts in San Francisco and California in general usually spreads ...

As a Noir/Hard-Boiled fan, I often find Dashiell Hammett as my least favourite of the writers out there. But I remember loving that book...maybe because I was reading it while I’m Paris.
PS. Wasn’t there a terrible Bruce Willis film adaptation of this book?

I think reading anything in Paris would be memorable! :) I didn't realize Bruce Willis was in an adaptation of this book but I looked it up and it was called "Last Man Standing" from 1996. I've definitely got to watch this at some point! I think it's cool that this book was adapted in the film Yojimbo by Kurosawa which was in turn adapted into the western A Fistful of Dollars with Clint Eastwood. So art creating art creating art
