Thank you for the review. I am a huge Gordimer fan. I had to revisit the book somehow in my mind just last night because of the current issues concerning farmers in South Africa. I could not help but remember the body on Mehring's farm when I realised how anxious farmers are because of the number of lifeless bodies that they discover on their farms YEARS after Nadine wrote this book. Please read July's People as well. ❤ I hope you enjoy it.
Wait, this is why South Africa today is taking land back from farmers. I know it's a fiction novel but it fits like a glove in today's South Africa land political climate.

This was an excellent review, your enthusiasm is contagious!
I'd say read "The Pickup" then "July's People" and "Burger's Daughter."
I have been hesitant to read Nadine Gordimer. I had heard some pretty negative stuff about her writing, but your review has me reconsidering.
The prose isn't easy to navigate but the story and the allegorical meaning felt worth it so I think you should definitely give it a try.

It's always interesting to see how fact is represented in fiction, even how novels that were written decades ago still mirror the present landscape.
@@RunwrightReads I think I'm having a Cornbread, Earl, and Me moment.
