If you replace the ash of war on your turtle shell shield with the ash of war "No Skill," you can keep the shield in your left hand and use the ash of war on your weapon. (The "No Skill" ash of war on a shield means that the shield doesn't take over from the weapon.) No need to keep two-handing a weapon to use its ash of war. If you don't have that ash of war, you can either buy it from the empty chair in the drawing room at Volcano Manor (if that is still there) or from the ladies with the unfortunate faces at the round table (it would be in the Knight Bernahl bell bearing menu item).
