  • Welcome to the London History Show!
Every episode, we'll be looking at a different statue, plaque, building or feature of London's landscape that you can find for yourself, and we'll tell its story.
The discovery of (what was at the time) the world's largest fatberg underneath Whitechapel Road hearkens back to another crisis in London's sewerage: the Great Stink of 1858.

My brother-in-law was a streets & sanitation worker for a coastal California city. He has dealt with many fatbergs.
Protip: Wet wipes bill themselves as being flushable. That only means they can make it around the U-bends of your toilet... They can (and WILL) clog the pipes between your house and the municipal main sewage lines. If (when!) they clog you WILL get a bill to clear them.
Human waste and "loo" paper are all that should ever go down one's toilet. Everything else is contraindicated, inconvenient, and VERY smelly.
ps- Do NOT ever flush cat litter. It turns into very expensive concrete that must be chiseled out at great expense to you.

      @robhogg68 ปีที่แล้ว +8

One place I worked, we also had a plea not to use the type of loo freshehers which hang over the rim of the loo bowl. If they ever get dislodged and flushed, they tend to lodge themselves in very inaccessible places, apparently.

When my daughter was born in 1975 the wipes were said to be flushable. They promptly clogged our sewer line to the main street line. Currently wipes do have a do not flush in print and in the international no sign over a toilet. I'm sure people do, but we cannot fix stupid.

It’s amazing just what exactly you find down sewer pipes. I used to repair and unblock sewer pipes and wipes cause most blockages and people had no idea they should not flush them. Another incredible thing is seeing tree roots grow and crush 100mm pvc pipe to get inside them

I just learned yesterday about mini fatbergs in home drains (including ours) from fat/oils off your body and kitchen waste, with the third visit from a plumber to fix our own "Great Stink" ... and we don't even use wetwipes or the other no-noes. BTW the London Museum of Water and Steam in Kew is of the best museums ever to learn about the sewer system, wonderful huge steam powered pumping engines- visited in 2017 on our big overseas trip. Also changed our attitudes to the use of water forever.

One wonders whether putting the fatburg itself on display was worth the health risk to those interacting with it and the effort that went into preserving it, especially if the process of rendering the bacteria inert changed the appearance anyway. I would have thought it would be better to make a huge model and shock everyone with a plaque saying how small a percentage of the whole fatburg it represents.

Neil Gaiman's book Neverwhere does a very nice job of describing the sewer system under London, and the native streams, creeks and springs that used to flow clean into the Thames estuary. That were then covered and used as sewers. Reading the book was the first time I'd heard the Great Stink mentioned, and the destruction it brought about to the estuary. Granted, it was high tech for it's time, so must be forgiven I suppose.

I wish the PSA part of the video wasn't necessary, but it totally is... Just because a company prints "flushable" on a package doesn't mean it's safe for the sewers! And you *really* don't want to have to pay a plumber because something you flushed got stuck halfway down the pipe between your house and the street... 😬
I don't know why it's taken TH-cam so long to recommend you to me - your content is great!

I cannot overstate how much bidets reduce the waste you're sending down your pipes. You could theoretically not use any toilet paper at all, although it just feels better to get a one or two wipes done with toilet paper, to remove any uh... debris, and then rinse clean with water. And nowadays, space is less of an issue as bidets can come built into toilets, so you no longer need a separate butt sink in your bathroom.
I grew up with a bidet in my bathroom and I never understood why someone would use wet wipes in the bathroom until very late in life.

In Australia atm, we have a TV campaign that is a little song, that goes something like this:-
"Our pipes, are having issues, with your wipes, paper towels and tissues..."
I can't remember the rest, but it seems that too many of us (Australians) are flushing stuff we shouldn't as well. I could never understand how people can be so misguided, as to think that you can flush nappies, condoms or other inorganic insoluble "stuff". It is often the same people who complain about the cost of living/taxes etc.

@@negy2570 What is "gracious" about having a completely unnecessary, expensive, space occupying EXTRA piece of porcelain in your bathroom? If you still have to "wipe your bum" after using a bidet, then why bother with them at all?
I've never understood the redundancy, myself. Total waste, and completely outdated once decent toilet paper was created.

I've done plumbing, I've dug ditches in mud and much, snaked a lot of waste lines. I've changed baby diapers that look like a large cow was somehow inside my small child; the thought of seeing the fatberg scared the hell out of me. Saw it in 2018. It was well tamed, I was psychologically unharmed.
The way a cesspool or a modern septic tank works is the liquids leech into the ground leaving behind the solids (poo) which than has to be extracted.
I always thought of Bazalgette when I walked along the embankment, know there'd be no continuous path without his sewage pipes underneath.

Wow! The Crossness Pumping Station is really beautiful. I guess they don't build em' like they used to and this is an example of Victorian or Edwardian engineering, like what you don't get anymore because it's too darned expensive. Technology has probably moved on and the stress is less on elegance and more on cold hard functionality.

The fact i like the most about Bazalgette’s design is that he calculated the then current required capacity, then when right ahead and build the system twice as big as it strictly needed to be for demand at that time of construction. It’s almost like he knew that buck-passing is the favourite activity of past, present & future politicians, so if they were finally going to fund much needed infrastructure, he better take the opportunity to build in some redundancy. If Bazalgette had not done that, London would have started having issues in the 1950s

Thames Water built itself its own power plant 11 years ago in which it was aiming to provide about 16% of its energy needs. I don't know where she got that the sludge went to Liverpool. They send it to Slough, Berkshire where its is made into flakes of 'sludge fat' and then sent back to Crossness.

Having had pipe blockage in a newly bought house, I can tell you this whole business is best avoided.
Most important an never addressed is the pouring of cooking oil and solid fats down the kitchen sink. They contribute greatly to the problem, and should be poured/wiped out of the vessel and thrown in the garbage. I also do not use the garbage disposal. It is convenient to dump everything down the sink where it “disappears” but will also help build clogs.

I didn't understand how strong wet wipes are until I had a clog toilet. Many of them are made of non-woven polyester or polypropylene, essentially the same material that drain cleaner bottles are made of. How can you dissolve something that is used to contain the solvent? You can't. It's basically "forever plastic". You can flush a beef brisket or whole chicken down the toilet. It will clog for the time being. But since it's organic, given enough time they will disintegrate eventually. But not wet wipes. Wet wipes are forever.

Solution -- stop the silly recycling. Burn the stuff for fuel. It will be cheaper. You'll get more energy from it than biodiesel. And it will be better for the environment. (Filtering the oils and purifying them takes energy. So does turning them into biodiesel. This energy comes from either coal or natural gas. Burning the fatberg without recycling will produce less pollution than the recycling process.)

The defence os no war that via the words here shoring uo no consumption to hunger before allesls amd to endure that pmtjng calms the nose to not feel it is swimming in food..so the answer for the as we is o war to shild is OK but to break rank os not possible ke the shild is a defence of 100 000 advance then this is OK to.kill. or defend . But to entice the humans as above ks nrwar what is reposted or has happened trying to decide one political group or another is an enemy is insane and indicates a human making these choices about peoe is ill and feeding to excessively. Hence hunger before each meal and anybhjman making decisions need to be in the right weight for height. It is as uncucef with out the miney . Or revolutions of where angucire says no matter what it has to be wealth to ballance amd if not it is vecUese poor is fat
